FEBRUARY 3, 2013: FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Friends in Christ, As we enter the month of February, we are now ten

days away from the start of Lent. Looking back to Janu-ary 25th, the March for Life was a great success. We had a group of students from All Saints as well as many pa-rishioners from Saint Patrick's and beyond. Conse-quently, we really need to be sure that next year we have a group from Saint Rocco. Although it is a long day, it is a great occasion to stand up for life, and to lend our voices to those who cannot speak for themselves.

As I had expected, the Mainstream Media ignored or downplayed the March. The Wall Street Journal did not even mention it. Shame! Newsday managed to find the only pro-abortion demonstrators, and placed a photo (without an article) with the caption “the struggle goes on”. What a disgrace! I was there. I did not see any pro-abortion demonstrators. I saw hundreds of thousands of Americans marching for life.

This and many other examples show us the sad state to which American journalism has fallen. The right to a free press is based on the notion that journalists have the re-sponsibility to challenge the powers that be and to repre-sent the voiceless. Now, the American media for the most part are lapdogs for the powers that be and try to muffle the cries of the powerless. God, we pray, give courage to journalists and reporters to tell the unwanted truths so that our country can live up to its noble aspirations.

The abolition of abortion is the civil rights movement of our age, and it is not going away. Every year the par-ticipants at the March get younger and younger. Eventu-ally abortion will be restricted, and finally made rare be-cause it makes a mockery of our democracy and under-mines the moral vision of our society. Violence is not the solution to an unplanned pregnancy. Sacrificial love, compassion and the courage to give up one’s child for adoption constitute a solution that transforms desperation and violence into life and happiness.

With the approach of Lent and the acknowledgment of our shortcomings and failings as individuals, we should make reparation and demonstrate our repentance by changing our lives, and especially by helping others. As a parish, we need to do much better on pro-life matters. I hold myself principally responsible because I have not given it the attention it not only deserves, but that it de-mands. If anyone wants to help organize a pro-life com-mittee for the parish so that we can become better in-formed about the ways in which abortion distorts our de-mocracy, poisons human relationships, damages our families and harms our moral ecology, in a word, how abortion is the most dangerous structure of sin that faces our country.

BULLETIN REFLECTION Jeremiah declares that the Lord knew him before he was born and dedicated and appointed him to his role as prophet even before he drew breath. We, too, are known and sent by the Lord. What deeds of love and service are mine to perform?

LIVING STEWARDSHIP We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who seek to discover their role in this world by learning who God created them to be through prayer, gift discovery or other awareness tool.

Alcuni riappaiono in forme nuove.

A structure of sin is a conglomeration of sinful pat-terns of behavior and thought that justify and rationalize evil. For this reason, it is extremely powerful and diffi-cult to change. However, when we fight against such evils as Christians, we do not face it alone. God’s People have eliminated numerous structures of sin during the course of Salvation History. Some reappear in new guises. Abortion is certainly one of them. Whether we call it child sacrifice or abortion, it is the same tempta-tion to obtain peace and wellbeing by human sacrifice.

May the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, stir up in our

hearts the desire to repent, to turn away from sin, both personal and social, and to embrace a culture of life in which we recognized every unborn child as a gift from God, whose potential for goodness and love can change the world immeasurably for the better.

God bless you, Father Elias
