Dear Parishioners,Next weekend we begin the season of Advent: our

journey to Christmas. This Advent the design of our parish “wreath” again

invites us to engage our imagination. Envision in your mind’s eye a pathway forward that joins together the four distinct, unjoined candles. Travel along as we light each candle in succession up to the manger, to the birth of Jesus at Christmas. Consider the sandals and the need for us to understand what it is to walk not only in our own shoes but those of others. Gaze upon the angel placed in our sanctuary as a reminder of how angels traditionally help to guide us on life’s journey.

As you do this, we ask you to consider and begin to discern how our parish community might best walk to-gether, making his paths straight.

The Pastoral Council listening sessions are a good place to start. What have you heard from your fellow parish-ioners during the session you attended? How have you felt and learned as you openly listened and shared? How might we deepen our sensitivity to walk in each other’s shoes? What steps might we take to become a parishioner -driven parish? What ideas might we incarnate for our parish to give birth to new light? How do we best invite those who have walked away from our Church to return? What shoes can we provide for them? In short, how do we make this Advent Season of waiting and preparation a time to renew ourselves and our parish community?

Creating a similar Advent “wreath” for your own home with four candles, sandals, an angel and an empty crib can further help your engagement with this spirit of renewal.

We will bless our “wreath” on the first weekend of Ad-vent and pray the following prayers as we light the can-dles:

Eternal God, pour forth your blessing upon us as we light the candles of this Advent wreath. May its growing brightness remind us of the approaching nearness of Je-sus, our Savior, so that on the day of His coming we may be found ready to take the bold and necessary steps to renew ourselves and our parish with your grace and bless-ing, in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

First Sunday of Advent: Challenging God of light, as we prepare for the coming of Jesus, may our hearts and
