Dear Parishioners,Greetings! My name is David Brooks, and I am a longstand-

ing parishioner here at St. Ignatius. I am also the newly elected Director of Charismatic Renewal Services for the Archdiocese of Boston, website www.CRSBoston.com., with an office at the Pastoral Center in Braintree. I would like to explore with you what Catholic Charismatic Renewal is, examine its begin-nings in the U.S., its history in Boston, and conclude with an invitation to a charismatic healing service here at St. Ignatius on November 16.

Pope Francis defines Catholic Charismatic Renewal as "a current of grace of the Holy Spirit," being poured out for the renewal of the church in our time. There is an emphasis on a personal, experiential relationship with Jesus, and on express-ing the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Renewal is Trinitarian, with worshippers often addressing the creator God as "Abba" in prayer and song. The mainstay of the Renewal is the weekly prayer meeting, which features praise and worship, teaching, intercession, sharing, and both individual and group prayer. There is also an emphasis on complete surrender to Jesus in all aspects of one's life, and obedience to both the mandates of the gospel and Catholic teaching, as well as maintaining Christ-centered friendships in the community.

Catholic Charismatic Renewal was an out-growth of Vatican II originating on February 1967 at a collegiate retreat at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. The Holy Spirit was experienced in power by the retreatants, and the movement spread rapidly. There are now over 160 million Catholic charismatics in over 230 countries. The first large scale prayer meeting in Boston was held in the early '70s at the former Cenacle retreat house on Lake Street with the blessing of Cardinal Medeiros. Today in Boston the Renewal is composed of 7 ethnic groups - An-glos, Brazilians, Haitians, Hispanics, Nigerians, Ugandans, and Vietnamese - all Catholic charismatic communities with their own prayer groups, united under a single Constitution signed by Cardinal O'Malley.

In a recent article in the Jesuit magazine "America" Austen Ivereigh poses the question: "Could Francis be our first charis-matic pope?" He is, in the sense of having been "prayed over" while Cardinal of Buenos Aires. Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, the charismatic papal household preacher, and a handful of Pen-tecostal pastors, gathered for his "baptism in the Holy Spirit.” Those so baptized desire and receive a fuller anointing and indwelling of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost earlier this year, Pope Francis created a new entity, Charis - Catholic Charismat-ic Renewal International Service - an umbrella organization for

Estimados Feligreses:¡Saludos!

"Love compels each of us to resist racism courageously."It requires us to reach out generously to the victims of this evil, to assist the conversion needed in those who still harbor racism and to begin to change policies and structures that allow racism to persist. Overcoming racism is a demand of justice, but because Christian love transcends justice, the end of racism will mean that our community will bear fruit beyond the equal treatment of all. After all, “Within the human family,” as St Paul said, “each person preserves and expresses its own identity and enriches others with its gifts of culture."
