A Message about Our Lady of Guadalupe from Paulina Canales

2/Second Sunday of Advent

Second Sunday of Advent w December 8th, 2019Isa 11:1-10 w Rom 15:4-9 w Matthew 3:1-12

(Continued on page 4)

“Our Lady of Guadalupe”Juan Diego, a religious man, an indigenous man, recently

converted and baptized, was strolling around his village the 9th of December, 1531, the Saturday Mass of the Virgin Mary and the catechism, in Tlateloco, Mexico City. He listened to birds chant their songs. Suddenly, he heard a gentle voice call his name. Our Lady of Guadalupe asked him where he was going and manifested her identity and her wishes for him to become the messenger to the colonial priest to tell him to raise a "Holy Household" where he stood. Juan Diego, undeterred to maintain his indigenous beliefs, went before the priest to unravel the message. Skeptical, the priest ordered Juan Diego to confess what he was or-dered to mandate. Alas, his experience was considered nonsense. Three days later, the 12th of December, the Vir-gin commanded the man to return to the priest, this time prepared with na-tive roses, from the hills surrounding his village, to nourish his tunic and to portray the perfect image of the Virgin Mary. The priest himself begged for-giveness to the humble man and cher-ished her image for centuries to come.

Our Lady of Guadalupe showed to the people her solidarity when she told Juan Diego, “Listen, my most aban-doned son.” She is telling him that he is not alone. Juan Diego represents the Indigenous people who are a source of the truth, rather than Indigenous rejected by the Spaniards.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a mother of a new life in a re-cently conquered land. She mantains the integrity for the hu-miliated people. She is against domination and violation of the defenseless.

The first revelation of the Virgin of Guadalupe’s identity comes in the way she provokes affection and intimacy. Her voice invites Juan Diego to feel secure, to be calm being him-self.

Our Lady of Guadalupe was inclusive because she con-veyed her message to all places in a way that everyone would understand and believe. This was accomplished by using in-digenous symbols and clothes, giving hope to the people, and speaking in their native Nahuatl language.

Our Lady of Guadalupe has to be special in the order to reconcile two races and unite them in one devotion that aims always to recall the Son of God.

Celebration of Our Lady of GuadalupeSunday, December 15th | 12 p.m. Upper ChurchIn lieu of our regular Family Mass and Faith Formation Programming, families are invited to participate in a bi-lingual mass celebrating our Lady of Guadalupe. All chil-dren are encouraged to join the procession with St. Juan Diego. There will be no 10 a.m. Family Mass.

The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe is an empowering story that transforms their culture and the stories from suf-fering and incomprehension to the esteem and care that leads them to be strong. The objective to tell them the story is not to teach them the place in history, it is to help them trans-form their consciousness and liberate them from the struggle and help them to be agents of change in the world.St. John Paul II said: "Saint Mary of Guadalupe… a great example of evangelization is perfectly inculturated."

Green TeamPrayer:

God, our Creator, we offer this humble prayer for the [Advent and] Christmas season. We pray for joy in our hearts, hope in our God, love to forgive, and peace upon the earth. May there be bread for the hungry, love for the unlovable, healing for the sick, protection for our children, and wisdom for our youth. Holy

Spirit fill our hearts with your love and power.–Rev. Lia Icaza Willetts

Action:Downsizing for Christmas:

Reduce, Repurpose, and Recycle This year let’s each try to take small steps to reduce our carbon footprint by incorporating environmentally friendly behaviors into our traditions. Together, let’s reduce the massive number of

gifts, paper, and food that ends up in landfills around the world. Eco-friendly Christmas tips:

•Gift an experience, e.g., tickets to a play, a movie, a museum, etc.).•Gift a consumable (olive oil, baked goods, chocolate, etc.).•Use a “Secret Santa” for family gifting. Draw names and give one quality gift rather multiple exchanges.•Repurpose boxes, baskets, or tins as a gift wrap option.•Agree to “upcycle” and “recycle” gift exchanges. Shop at flea markets and thrift stores. Have fun! •Consider planting or decorating a small tree on your property instead of cutting down a live tree.•Make a present. Be an elf. •Plan in advance on how you will use leftover food from parties.
