Dear Parishioners,Beginning on Sunday, September 1st until Sunday, October

6th, our parish will join Christians throughout the world in cel-ebrating the “Season of Creation.” This annual celebration of prayer and action is aimed at raising our consciousness about the need to protect all of God’s beautiful, grace-filled creation. It is a time, particularly for us as Catholics, to encourage one another in finding new ways to put Pope Francis’s 2015 encyc-lical, Laudato Si, into practice.

The theme of this year’s world-wide celebration is “the web of life.” Because of “our way of life,”, according to the United Nations, an estimated 1 million species are “threat-ened” with extinction in the next few decades. This year’s theme, therefore, highlights the “urgent need” we have to protect biodiversity and thus become better stewards of our world.

In preparation for this celebration, our parish has offered throughout the sum-mer a Laudato Si circle. Fol-lowing the six chapters of the encyclical, a small group of parishioners have been meeting for six weeks to read, pray and reflect upon each chapter. The Green Team of our Peace, Justice and Reconciliation Commission also has continued to provide us with prayers and suggestions for how we can each do our part to better care for our global environment.

During the Season of Creation itself, our music, our church’s art and environment, and our Prayers of the Faithful will re-flect our participation in this celebration.

Among the specific events we have planned is a forum on the climate emergency: “the Earth is Crying: What is Our Re-sponse?” This forum will be held on Sunday, September 15th after our 5:30pm mass in the Lannon Chapel.

In addition, this year from September 20th to 27th, we will try to do our part to support an “All Ages Climate Strike.” This movement, begun in Sweden by a teenager, Greta Thunberg, who began protesting outside of Parliament about the need for immediate action to combat climate change, has expanded to include an estimated 1.4 million students in 112 countries

around the world who participated in the strike on March 15, 2019. The movement is now asking adults to join them. See https://globalclimatestrike.net

On Monday, September 30th at 7pm in the Upper Church parishioners are invited to a prayer service that will include a specially written Rosary: On the Mysteries of Creation.

To conclude our celebration of the Season of Creation our Lay Preaching Council will offer reflections at the masses, on the weekend of October 5th and 6th.

I do hope you will be able to participate in these events. Since whether or not the record heat this summer in Boston was directly the result of global warming, the soring tem-peratures do serve as a reminder of the ongoing and ever growing “greenhouse effect,” namely, of the gases caused by fossil fuels that trap heat preventing it from escaping from the Earth.

As we embark on the Season of Creation let us pray to-gether the words that are part of the special Rosary: Holy Spirit, Preserver of Life, grant us wisdom that we may be good stewards of God's creation, entrusted to us by the Fa-ther and redeemed by the life, death, and resurrection of Je-sus Christ. Amen.

Peace,Fr. Joe

Ah…The Good Old Summeertime and Vacation Time are Just About Over! And food pantries will be up to full speed again. That means that shelves will need to be replenished for the busy days ahead. Please don’t forget your local food pantry if you can help. This includes food cards, also. See the wall posters at any church entrance for the list of local pantries and informa-tion about drop-off hours and/or contact information.

Paz,El Padre. Joe
