Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 23rd, 2020Isa 22:19-23 Rom 11:33-36 Matthew 16:13-20

From the Desk of the Pastor

(Continued on page 3) (Continúa en la página 3)

Dear Parishioners,Many of you will recall that our last weekend of public

Masses was March 7th/8th. We are therefore getting very close to the six-month mark of being mainly an online parish. Can you believe it? I certainly can’t! On some level it doesn’t even seem real, but rather totally surreal.

What I can believe and what still feels very real, however, is the pain week after week of not being physically gathered together as a parish community. Yes, we do get a glimmer of such physical gathering at our public 4:00pm Saturday Mass with a few of you. And while it is truly good to see some of you (at a safe distance), I must admit my deep disappointment that, for obvious safety reasons, I cannot stand at the front doors (even after they are refur-bished and restored!) to greet you as I normally would do.

Moreover, even though we try as hard as we can to make this experience of Mass as safe as possible, still an abundance of caution requires that many of you must still prudently join us at home through our livestream Masses and other liturgies

As we enter a new academic year, we would like to offer, in addition to the livestream Masses and the 4:00pm Saturday Mass, a 5:30pm Sunday Mass beginning August 30th. If you can help us by becoming a Greeter, Usher, or Cleaner/Dis-infector for either of our public Masses, please contact the

Worshipping online seems to have become, for many, some-thing of a new weekly ritual. I have heard from parishioners and friends of the many wonderful ways they have found for exploring the web to discover various Masses and homilies. Some who have worshipped at their own parish in person or virtually subsequently engage in homily searches throughout the week. Knowing the readings already, they go straight for the homily to continue to be fed anew. Some have even joined with others to break open the Scriptures on Zoom each week.

For a Church that prior to the Second Vatican Council hor-ribly neglected Scripture, this time to focus on it and its various interpretations and meanings is a hopeful, invigorating sign – a real source of new life.

Given this special time in our history, we have decided to seize this opportunity and focus our Family Faith Formation program on the Lectionary, following along with the readings, especially the Gospel, each week. Our online Family Liturgy of the Word, therefore, will become an essential part of our

¡Cierta-mente no puedo!

parish’s Faith Formation program. This new online program now being developed requires real creativity and active family engagement. Our new director of Faith Formation, Andrea Miller, our Faith Formation Assistant, Annarose Jowenson, and our catechist volunteers, I know, are certainly up for the task. As this exciting new program takes shape, we will certain-ly be sharing more about it with you.

As you can see, we are continuing to try to join in our own special, rather unique way with the entire Archdiocese in its celebration of the Year of the Eucharist. Our two-fold focus upon Hearing the Word and becoming Bread for Others as essen-tial for the celebration of the Eucharist will help us to further imagine creative new ways of worship. I do hope this time, then, will not simply be surreal but can become for us a real time of growth and grace.

Plus, I do suspect our God will be pleased by our two-fold focus for we will come to know Jesus and his Real Presence in both Word and Sacrament and thus be strengthened in ho-liness.

Blessings,Fr. Joe

Ministry Training Wednesday, August 26th | 7:00 p.m. - Upper Church

Can you serve as a parish volunteer in the role of Greeter, Usher, or Cleaner/Disinfector for our Saturday 4:00 p.m. or

Sunday 5:30 p.m. Masses? If you are able, please consider attending our training this coming Wednesday.

LEARNING to Meet us with God

Fr. César Muziotti SJIn May 2019 we started an initiative in our parish of St Ignatius, called APRENDER (LEARNING) mainly with

members of our Hispanic community. Since then, APRENDER has been a school for living Ignatian Spirituality, based on the systematic logic and accompaniment of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius in Everyday Life. Three people have accompanied the participants so far: Rita Rodríguez, Cristina Pieretti and Fr. César Muziotti SJ. Nor-mally APRENDER used to meet every two weeks, to share in groups the personal experience of prayer through resources given each week.

With this pandemic of COVID - 19, we initially felt the danger of the interruption of our processes. However, from what produces ruptures and frustration, grace also emerges. Given the reality of quarantine, APRENDER found in the use of virtual resources an opportunity to have weekly meetings, also sharing life in the sadness of this time and to continue our processes of growth in the art of praying with Ignatian logic. We were able to organize

On July 25, following the logic of First Week of the Exercises, we were able to have a one-day virtual-presential Spiritual Retreat. We had three virtual moments for the orientation of three personal moments of prayer around the mission that each person has, our fallings into the dynamics of the evil inside this world and the Mercy of God that always raises us from these falls and invites us to continue walking and creating with Him. Then, we had the Eucharist, following all the health protocols in one of the chapels of our Parish, also transmitted by Zoom for those who could not attend. At the end of the day, we gathered online to share the fruits of our prayer and we ended

The Catholic Appeal

We Still Need a Few More Parishioners to Help Reach Our GoalEven in the midst of a global pandemic, service to others remains core to the work of our Church.

Anointing the sick. Serving our faith communities. Supporting our schools.

And so much more. As you know, your gift to the annual Catholic Appeal

helps supports this work. This year the Archdiocese helped us with guidance

and supplies to reopen our Church building as well as aid us in securing the

government loan needed to keep our employees on payroll. Each year your

generosity has helped us reach our Annual Appeal goal and as a result we re-

ceived a rebate. This year we need 126 donors in order to qualify for a rebate

in 2020. We simply need a few more donors. We recognize that some of you

may not but able to donate this year. If you are able, please prayerfully consider making a gift to

the 2020 Catholic Appeal to ensure that this critical work continues. To learn more about Your

Church at Work or to make a donation, visit: www.bostoncatholicappeal.org.

Thank you!

Notice:Dr. Anthony Compagnone, a parishioner and member of the Liturgy

Commission, has advised us that masks are effective ONLY if they cover both your nose and your mouth,

with a snug fit over the nasal bridge. This is the best way to prevent your respiratory droplets from

escaping into the space around you and onto others.

Further, he pointed out that recent studies have shown that, while valved masks may make it easier for

you to inhale, they are ineffective in preventing your exhaled breath from

contaminating the air around you.

Valved masks of any kind, therefore, will be prohibited for use during Mass at St. Ignatius. The Greeter

at your liturgy will happily provide you with an acceptable mask to wear as you enter the church. We also

ask that you wear your mask properly throughout the Mass.

This is for the safety of us all. We appreciate your cooperation.

-Fr. Joe
