From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Friends in our Lord Jesus at St. Joe and Collegeville: I am addressing the “Benedictine Catholic Communities” as one body in Christ. What a wonderful service at St. John the Baptist this past Saturday. It was a joy to see so many old friends and renew their acquaintance as well as meet some new folks. It was a real blessing. Here in St.

Joe we are still talking about the deluge that shut down the parish festival on the 4th. It began just at the end of the parade and then look out for the cats and dogs raining down. The tents were really stressed and bulging until some of the younger folks began using brooms or anything of length to push the water out. We were up to our ankles in water it was coming so fast. In that sort of situation all we could do was get wet and enjoy each other’s company. Of course, the big event was on the 3rd and that was a great evening of music playing and community gathering. It is amazing that this festival works just like the old county fairs where everyone in the area gathered to enjoy an evening of fun. Thanks to the many hands that make this event work we had a fine evening. Rich Schwegel was the commander-in-chief of the event which is run like clockwork. The parish is indebted to all the parishioners but also the wonderful contribution of the Velines. Fr. Jerome Tupa, OSB, Pastor

Gospel Reflection for July 14th

Loving isn't too difficult, right? Many of us are surrounded by kind, lovely people trying to do the right thing. Indeed, to "love ? your neighbor as yourself" seems like it should be easy enough. Treat people like you would like to be treated. Bring the new neighbors some baked goods (normal and gluten-free, just in case). Chat with the bank teller about his holiday weekend. Write an occasional card to your sister "just because." There were probably varieties of these acts of kindness in Jesus' day. Perhaps substituting figs for cookies. But "exchange pleasantries with the traveling cloth merchant" isn't the example Jesus gives. "A man fell victim to robbers... they stripped him and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead." The righteous pass by the scene of the dying man. The hero of the story is the one on the margins of Jewish society, who perhaps would not have been welcomed, in other circumstances, by the man now in the ditch. His neighborly love causes him to halt his journey, to tend wounds, and to pay for the man's care out of his own savings. Are we interruptible? Are we attentive to the hurts of others? Are we generous with our money and possessions? In the past few weeks, who has crossed your mind as someone in need of help? Perhaps it's an acquaintance suffering from cancer. Maybe you were invited to donate or volunteer to a local social cause, but it just won't stick in your mind (or schedule) to make it happen. The needs of people are many and varied. We can't help everyone, but God does place opportunities in our path for compassion and courageous love. This week, be "the one who treated him with mercy."

Gospel Reflection for July 21st

Active and contemplative. At work and at rest. These are dynam-ics we all face in our lives, and if we're honest, we might not al-ways balance perfectly! In this Sunday's Gospel, our daily ten-sions play out in two sisters. Mary "sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak." Martha, on the other hand, is "burdened with much serving." This, as it turns out, is not necessarily "the better part." All of us reading this have some sort of labor we engage in. We have different trades or careers. We have responsibilities as fami-ly members, some of which may take up most of our time. In the time of Scripture, showing hospitality to guests was one of the most important values in society. Our work is important. Jesus himself spent decades as a carpenter. So what's the problem with Martha? Martha is burdened, anxious, and worried. Not only that, but she resents her sister's choice. "Tell her to help me," she de-mands of Jesus. How easy it is to get very busy doing good things. We need to provide for our families and plan for retirement. We need to make sure children are clothed, fed, and educated. Our committees, ministries, and sports schedules need to stay on track. However, without a balance of work with rest, without contemplation in the midst of our action, we will miss the point. While many parts are required for our life in the world to function, the better part is our relationship with God. This week, make time in your busy sched-ule to sit at Jesus' feet. Maybe this is 20 minutes with Scripture, participating in a daily Mass, or a quiet walk alone in the park. Receive what Christ wants to speak to you.
