Message from Mrs. Anna Simione, Principal of Saint Teresa School
As we near the end of our school year, I want to thank all our parishioners for your support. Our Eighth Graders graduate on Friday June 16 and
are well-prepared for their high school experience.
Many new families have registered for next year, and there is still time in the next weeks to visit us. Parents and students can get a tour of the facility
and meet some of our students and teachers. Prospective students can also “shadow” for a day
and experience what being at STS is all about.
Call us at 718 448 9650 for an appointment. Some financial assistance for new students is available
from the Archdiocese. Parents can also complete a school application at stteresaschool.org.

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,
In recent months you may have read touching articles in our local paper about the urgent need for safe, appro-priate housing in our community for young people with autism.
Their families, some of whom are our parishioners and neighbors, have taken excellent care of their children for many years. Now, as these parents grow older, they are anxious to know that their family members will have safe and happy places to live when they are no longer able to be cared for at home, or when it is simply better for them to live among their peers.
I am hoping and praying that our Saint Teresa Church, with the understanding of our neighbors on Windsor Road and of our St. Teresa School parents, can be part of the solution to this challenge faced by families of young people with autism. Let me suggest how we can do this.
Our parish owns an empty building which for many years was home to the Presentation Sisters who taught in our school. Parishioners generously donated money to build this convent, which opened in 1960. It served its purpose for five decades. But the last Sisters left in 2012. Located at 139 Windsor Road, this building ought to be used for some good purpose, and should bring income for our parish, instead of costing us money to maintain it. But it clearly requires many improvements, and no suitable long-term tenants have appeared.
After the Sisters left, you may recall that we had tenants for about two years. In 2013 we welcomed a disas-
ter relief team sponsored by the Salem Evangelical Free Church on Clove Road, who came to help victims of Hurri-cane Sandy. This inter-church collaboration was excellent for everybody, but a temporary experience. The convent has been empty for many months. Last year, I received an inquiry from our expanding and effective archdiocesan healthcare ministry, which is called ArchCare. ArchCare operates five nursing facilities, including Carmel Richmond on Old Town Road. Arch-Care also has a wonderful home healthcare program, adult day care centers at Carmel Richmond and in St. George, and other programs dedicated to helping people of all ages and abilities, both Catholic and non-Catholic, to live dignified independent lives as close as possible to the people who care about them. Our Archbishop, Cardinal Dolan, has been encouraging ArchCare to expand their services and help people who are being overlooked. One group the Cardinal thought of was young adults with special needs who “age out” of their programs at age 21 and need housing for their future security. His Eminence directed the leaders of ArchCare to look for unoccupied parish buildings in suitable neighborhoods that could be transformed into supportive homes for small groups of young adults with autism. I was happy to hear about this, and welcomed a visit to our site.
Autism, sometimes called autism spectrum disorder, is the name for a variety of conditions characterized by
difficulties with social skills, speech and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. It is estimated that 1 in 68 children in the United States have autism. You can find a lot of information about autism on the internet and in bookstores. There are strengths and differences unique to each person with autism. But above all, people with autism are children of God. We have a responsibility as a church to try to meet their needs. And I think we have a beautiful opportunity to do that here and now.
When those visitors from ArchCare came to see our building, I was happy to show them around. They liked what they saw. Actually, our building and location really impressed them. Then I talked about this with our Parish Council and our Finance Council. Now I can share with everyone the fruit of this research and preparation. We are close enough to announce this as a real possibility.

The people of ArchCare have experience providing housing and services for vulnerable populations, and they can use that now to help a new small group of autistic adults to live happily and peacefully in our neighborhood. Our convent building can be converted into a home for eight to ten residents with individual units including private bath-rooms and kitchenettes. Residents will have communal spaces for eating and recreation, and assistance from a live-in caretaker. Applicants will be carefully chosen. Family members will form an Advisory Board, and each resident will have his or her own lease. This housing model will meet individual needs, while ensuring a safe and caring environ-ment, and promoting good relationships with neighbors. I think that the more our community understands this initiative of our parish to serve others, the better. Therefore I invite you to come to an Information Night with knowledgeable representatives from ArchCare. We will also be able to meet some parents of autistic adults and learn from them. Our guests will have information to share and can explain details and answer questions. We have scheduled their visit for Wednesday, June 21, at 7pm, in our church. The convent building will be open for a visit that night from 5 to 9pm, and on the Sunday before from 10am to 1pm, for anyone who wants to see what the building looks like now. This plan is a work in progress, and I am guessing that it will be two years before the first residents can move in. Like anything new, it raises questions and fears. Applicants, neighbors and school parents are all entitled to ask their questions and to voice their concerns. Their participation can help us think this through for everyone's bene-fit and satisfaction. To be clear, Saint Teresa Church will be supportive and helpful, and our parishioners may well be among those who live there, but our parish will not own or run this new home. ArchCare will shoulder that responsibility, and supply the personnel and expertise to do so fairly and well. And in an extraordinary commitment that makes eve-rything else possible, ArchCare will advance more than two and a half million dollars to completely renovate the convent and turn it into an up-to date, up-to-code residence that we can be proud of. There is another practical benefit for St. Teresa Church. You expect me to be a good steward of all of our properties - to take care of what people donate and what they donated in the past. That convent was built with parish-ioner donations. Some donors are still with us, and I thank them again. If this goes through, we will be exchanging an unused asset for a stream of income. My understanding is that our parish will be asked to sign a 99 year lease. Our Finance Council will help negotiate the rental rate for that. I expect that it will be above $100,000 per year. Changing this empty building into a happy home will take effort and cooperation on many levels. But the result will be extraordinarily good for the people who will live there. And for their families who love them and want to assure their future. And for those of us who will meet and welcome our new neighbors, and involve them in our parish life as much as they want. Summing up, I invite everyone's knowledge, discussion, and prayer. Good reading to help guide us would be the Gospel of Saint Matthew, chapter 25:31-46. This is a great new opportunity for a few fortunate individuals and their families, for a strong pro-life activity in our parish, and for a very proper use of our resources to help peo-ple to be treated the way we would want to be treated ourselves. Respectfully yours, Msgr. William Belford Pastor
