December 24, 2017

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,

I recently listened as two altar servers decided that the worst day of the week for them was Monday. Probably lots of adults would agree. But when Christmas comes on a Monday...it is a whole new ballgame! If you are reading this before the great day, you know that you want to be wide awake and filled with good cheer this particular Monday. With joy we join family and friends in greeting the Son of God and being kind and good to another - which is what Jesus has been for us, and what He told us to do for one another.

On behalf of my brother priests and of all of the dedicated people who are part of the ministries and programs at Saint Teresa Church, I wish you a special Christmas of happy memories and new joys, of spiri-tual wonder and practical delight, of people to be with, and a relationship with a God who never leaves us.

I also want to say thank you for all that give, in right worship of God and in service to one another. Your presence at Mass strengthens the faith and commitment of everyone else. Your good deeds and good example are models of faith in action for the next generation. Your generous sharing - as you are doing in the RENEW+REBUILD campaign and at this season in our important Christmas collection - shows that you do not cling to what you have, and can give some away, and have understood that in giving, we receive.

Our model in all this is the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Christmas makes the most sense and gives you the most joy when you realize that whatever your present circumstances, Jesus Christ was born for you. Son of God though he was, Jesus loved you so much that he humbled Himself for you. He did this first by being born as a helpless baby in poor and dangerous circumstances. He became a human being like us in all things but sin. And then after thirty quiet years, he began his public life—which would lead to a cross—and proceeded to fulfill his mission: to reopen the gates of heaven for us.

No one says this better than God's inspired apostle and letter writer, Saint Paul. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, chapter 2, is where you can find an inspiring and trustworthy revelation about who Jesus was, and what Jesus did, and what He means to us.

Saint Paul begins this part of his message with an appeal to his listeners for unity and humility and appreciation, just as many parents do this Christmas, so that their children may live in peace with one another—and one day, through their faith and the merits of Jesus Christ, be united for joyful life in heaven:

“If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but [also] everyone for those of others.

Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God some-thing to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becom-ing obedient to death, even death on a cross.

Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every other name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." United with you in love for Jesus and service to his people, Msgr. William Belford

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY’S FUTURE

On Sunday, January 21, in our lower church hall after the 10am Mass, you are invited to join us and hear an experienced lawyer speak about estate planning, the importance of having a will, health care proxies, and related subjects that affect our families and their future. Ms. Joanne Seminara, Esq., a volunteer with our Arch-diocesan Office of Planned Giving, will explain about health care proxies, executors, power of attorney, tax issues, probate, how often a will should be updated, etc.

PLEASE RESPECT OUR NEIGHBORS

Please remember that our kind neighbors at Castleton Hill Moravian Church need their

parking lot on Sundays and during the week for their own churchgoers and preschool par-

ents. Even if the lot looks empty when you arrive, their people may be coming soon. So

please remember to come early for Mass and do not park over there.

The Children’s Liturgy at 10am Mass that is so good for ages 4 to 8 will take a short break for

December 24 and December 31, and will resume on January 7. Bring your children to enjoy!
