March 8, 2020

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,

Thank you for your prayers and support, especially to Father John Kallattil and our Parish staff, so that I could be with my brother Paul as he prepared to meet the Lord. Paul died at a hospice near his house in The Villages, Florida on March 4th from prostate cancer. We will have a funeral Mass here on Monday March 9th at 10:45. Family, friends, and parishioners are welcome. As we should often say, “May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen." Our Archdiocese's Vicar General, Msgr. Joseph LaMorte, is a very experienced pastor, and he offers good advice to clergy and parishioners about protecting ourselves from seasonal flu and coronavirus. I am happy to share his words with you. " With winter, even the mild one we have so far, comes colds, flu and all sorts of ills, and germs -- which are always with us. Now multiple cases of a novel coronavirus known to cause pneumonia have been found in the Unit-ed States. Priests, deacons and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are reminded of the need to practice good hygiene before and after the distribution of the Eucharist. This involves washing hands before Mass and when visit-ing parishioners in their homes or in institutions like hospitals and nursing facilities... It is also wise that this be done prior to and after the celebration of other sacraments and at other religious and social functions... Since people might transmit germs to one another with the exchange of the sign of peace, remind everyone to always exercise good judgment if they are sick. Let all understand that a verbal greeting, “The peace of the Lord be with you”, with a smile but no handshake, is not being unfriendly, but more likely shows care and consideration about possibly transmitting illness, or receiving it. There may be good reason, after watching someone else go through a pocketful of tissues, to be fearful of germs and to not want to shake hands at the sign of peace. In such a case, even if that person is oblivious to his or her condition, putting one's hands in a pocket and just verbally wishing the Lord’s peace is good enough." We recently had two celebrations of the Scouting movement in our Parish: an annual luncheon at The Staaten for Boy Scout Troop 37 on February 2, and the CubScoutPack37BlueandGoldDinnerinourgymlast Sunday for Cub Scouts and their families. It is great to see parents and children enjoying themselves, and grandparents and sib-lings there as well. I salute and thank all our adult leaders in Scouting, especially Troop 37 Scoutmaster Rob Pfuhler, and Pack 37 Cubmaster Jim Duffy. Along with many adult volunteers, they provide outstanding experiences for ad-venture and growth in self-confidence. One proof of the good formation of our Troop 37 members is the ultimate award that a Boy Scout can earn: Eagle Scout. This coming weekend three more members of Troop 37 will receive their Eagle Scout award: Liam O’Brien, Andrew DiCostanzo, and Joseph Ferretti. Congratulations to them and to their parents. It might be informative and rewarding to remind you about the 12 Core Values of Cub Scouting: Citizenship, Compassion, Cooperation, Courage, Faith, Health and Fitness, Honesty, Perseverance, Positive Attitude, Resource-fulness, Respect, Responsibility. At every meeting, both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts recite the Scout Oath: “On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law, to help other people at all times, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight." Following that, they describe what a Scout is. "A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent." Again - what a list of positive attitudes and practical self-identification. Hoping that we are all trying to live with faith, hope, and charity, and with core values and self-descriptions like these, I am yours in Christ, Msgr. William Belford
