STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” (GENESIS 15:7)

Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israel-ites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether your home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do you show your gratitude to God for the home He has given you? Do you make a sacrifice of any kind? Do you return any of your finances to God, investing equally in your eternal home just as you invest in your earthly home?

Please pray for all the faithful departed

BLACK CLOUDS WITH SILVER LININGS

For months now, even years, we have had some projects on the back burner that, when completed, will be very beneficial to our parish community. These include: the rental of the school building to Chicago Public Schools, the lease agreement with T-Mobile to erect a cell tower on our chimney, and the replacement of our church & hall air conditioning units. Sad to say, last week was not a very good

week in terms of any of these projects. Still, despite gloomy news, there is a ray of sunshine for each. Al-low me to explain.

SCHOOL BUILDING: For more than two years the word has been proclaimed that CPS intends to lease our school building and convert it to an early learning center. Mayor Emanuel announced it publicly back in February of 2017. We became excited, but nothing happened. And we waited. Then, last December the Real Estate Office of the Archdiocese informed me that CPS was a go for the lease, and that they were anxious to get the deal signed, even as early as January 1, 2019. Again, became excited, but nothing hap-pened. A lease was drawn up, approved by the Archdiocese, and sent to CPS for their approval and signa-ture. Still, nothing happened. Most recently, just a couple of weeks ago, I was told that CPS wanted to do one more walk-through of the facility as a prelude to signing the lease. The walk-through was scheduled, then cancelled. The latest: CPS has determined that they will not be able to open our school for their use until September 2021. Therefore, they are no longer in a hurry to sign the lease and start paying us, the lessor. So, we must wait some more. The silver lining: CPS is mandated to occupy our school and convert it to their purpose, so the "if" they will lease has become the "when" they will lease. My best guess: some-time this summer.

T-MOBILE: They signed the lease agreement some months ago that mandates an annual payment to St. Cornelius of $27,000. However, the chimney needs to be reinforced, and they waited too long to accomplish that because they can't do the inside of the chimney while the boiler is in operation. Looks like we will wait until spring for our first payment. But wait! Two weeks ago Jim Madura our Business Manager received a letter from T-Mobil stating that our first annual payment was imminent, being sent under a separate cover. Hurray! Not so fast. Regrettable, what you and I might consider immanent has a different meaning for T-Mobile. As I am writing this article, no check has come. So we wait. The silver lining: the lease is signed; the payments will commence. But when? Who knows.

AIT CONDITIONER: Last October I mentioned in the financial report to the parish that the money we were collecting from TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS had reached an amount that would allow us to re-place the AC units on our church roof in April, assuming the pledges continued to be paid in timely fash-ion. And the pledges did keep coming. And the sufficient funds are in the bank—sufficient according to the estimate we received a few years ago when TTWCI was initiated. Next step: have the HVAC firm come out, review the estimate, and see if any increase was necessary because of the elapsed time. Of course, during that time the parish had replaced some of the components that were included in the pro-posal. So how much of an increase would we face: a thousand dollars…maybe $10,000? Surprise—how about $100,000! The explanation: Apparently during the elapsed time the EPA came up with new require-ments that necessitated the replacement of coils, piping, etc. that were not deigned to be replaced in the original estimate. Obviously, that new amount blew us out of the water where this spring is concerned. Now more bids are necessary, and that process has begun. So where's the silver lining? The HVAC per-son from the Archdiocese, Heather, came up with an idea that may not require as much replacement as was deemed necessary. We are looking into that possibility. If it works, we may well be able to move ahead as planned. OK, it's not definite, but it's still a hope to cling to.

In the Bible, Job said: The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. I think I know where he was coming from. Hopes raised; hopes dashed; but then hopes rekindled, at least a little. Nothing wrong with holding on to hope! Fr. Dan

Renew My Church: A Call to Trust in the Lord Our parish, like all parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago, is participating in an effort of renewal. I’d like us all to consider the actual words “Renew My Church.” Who speaks these words to us? Jesus does, and these are the same words He has spoken to saints before us. Whose Church are we told to renew? His Church. What a wonderful gift we have as the Lord of the universe invites us to renew His Church. Finally, we have the word Church. It seems like a tall order to renew the Church. Isn’t that someone else’s job? Our own parish, maybe. But the whole Church? Yes. And we will, because renewal always, always, al-

ways begins within our own hearts. It is Jesus who speaks these words and as we see in our Gospel this weekend, God the Father recommends that we do as Jesus says: “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” (Luke 9:28-36). And let us not forget the words of Mary to the servants at the wedding feast in Cana: “Do whatever he tells you.”(John 2:5). Our Father and Mother are telling us to listen to Jesus and do whatever He tells us to do. Let’s acknowledge up front that doing either is not always easy. The cross is always present. And renewal can be stressful. For a lot of parishes, this renewal means some form of structural change, such as uniting with another parish. For others, it will be painful with the closure of a church or school. Faced with such a possibility, it can be easy for us to fall silent just as Peter, James and John did on Mt. Tabor. We can be overwhelmed, look away and maybe pretend to go on as if nothing new is really required of us. But something new is needed. Despite the valiant and beautiful efforts of so many pastors, lay leaders and ministry leaders, fewer and fewer people are encountering Jesus and experiencing him in parish community. Change we must, and it will involve frank discussions and some hard decisions to help all of our parishes invest in new ways of spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. We have the sound advice of our Father and Mother – we will listen to the Lord and we will do whatever He tells us. It may be difficult, and it may challenge us in ways we don’t want to be challenged. But we know that He is with us always and “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called ac-cording to his purpose.” (Rom 8:28) As always, for more information, visitRenewMyChurch.org, or ask the Pastor.

FROM THE PARISH NURSE …

Is this common condition affecting your brain? Stay tuned to find out ac-cording to the Advocate health enews staff.

“It's well known that diabetes can have a negative im-pact on your heart, kidneys, eyes and circulation, but now researchers are finding that it can affect your brain, as well.

A study involving 5,000 people in the UK found that people with diabetes and its precursor, prediabetes, experience more severe long-term cognitive decline than those with normal blood sugar levels.

Previous studies have indicated links before, but the UK study is notable for its size and the direct relation-ship it shows between blood sugar levels and cognitive function, even for those with prediabetes.

Results showed that over the course of the eight-year study, participants with diabetes or prediabetes had sig-nificantly decreased cognitive functions, such as memory and decision-making speed, compared to those with nor-mal blood sugar levels.

On a more positive note, the researchers suggest that get-ting control of one's blood sugar earlier can possibly slow the rate of cognitive decline.

'One finding suggest that interventions that delay diabetes onset, as well as management strategies for blood sugar control, might help alleviate the progression of subse-quent decline over the long-term,' the authors wrote.

Jodi Upchurch, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Advocate Eureka Hospital in Eureka, Illinois, stresses that there are many ways to manage diabetes.

'A healthy diet and regular exercise should become a way of life, no matter what type of diabetes you have or how long you have had it,' Upchurch says. 'For many, this may be enough to control the diabetes for a while. If diet and exercise aren't enough, there are many different types of medications to help your body manage blood sugar.'

Upchurch notes that each person's diabetes is different, and what lowers blood sugar for one person may not work for someone else.

'Additionally, what works today may not always be what is needed to manage the disease,' she adds. 'This is why it is important to check your blood sugars regularly and establish a good relationship with your health care team.'” Sister Ann Marie

The Holy Name Society would like to announce our man of the year, Deacon John Rottman. If you see Deacon John be sure to congratulate him. Many parishioners joined us as we celebrated a fun-filled St. Patrick's Day dinner. Thank you to those that helped make the night wonderful: the bakers, volun-teers that helped sell tickets, cleaned up afterwards and those supporters that made it a successful fundraiser. The night was truly a homerun for the Parish. See you next year.
