T THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 www.sjegoshen.org - (845) 294-5328 - [email protected] THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - NOVEMBER 12, 2017 I’d like to offer an update on three projects. First, almost all of the lights in the church have now been equipped with LED bulbs. (We did the best we could to clean the hanging fixtures, but they really need to come down and be disassembled for a thorough cleaning, new sockets, etc.) This is part of a larger project that will see almost all of the lights on the property converted from incandescent and fluorescent to this newer technology. The next phase will occur in the days surrounding Thanksgiving, when most of the fixtures in the school will be re-lamped. Orange and Rockland offered a generous incentive for all this work, so it made little sense to pass up the oppor- tunity. The second project, long on the agenda, comprises repairs and paving of the roads in St. John’s Cemetery. We recently signed a contract with Todd Lyons Paving of Middletown for this work. As of now, it’s scheduled for this Monday, November 13, provided the weather cooperates. The plan is to use multiple crews and a parade of trucks to accomplish the entire project in one day. As a result, the cemetery will not be accessible for the first few days this week. As ever, I am grateful for your patience and understanding. Finally, as I write this on Election Day morning, the reinstallation of the church doors is being delayed by one piece of custom-made hardware. It was supposed to have been delivered to our contractor yesterday. If you see the doors today, you’ll know it arrived. If you don’t see them, pray for the manufacturer, who will have by now received a call from me. + + + Two weeks ago, I wrote about the work being undertaken by the Pastoral Advisory Council in the development of a pastoral plan. In that column, I reflected upon the state of affairs in the Church today, specifically in our own society. This is the starting point; where to now? The members of the PAC have each been assigned to one of three committees: worship and spiritual life; educa- tion and formation; and Christian service. At this month’s meeting, each committee will be spending time brain- storming and discerning what questions it ought to be asking, what avenues it might explore. That may appear rather open-ended, but it seems to me this is preferable to a more tightly-scripted agenda. In my experience, too many “pastoral planning” exercises are front-loaded – i.e., the answer is already assumed, so the process is tailored to a pre-conceived outcome. We (the Church throughout the world) certainly have our challenges, but what age hasn’t? I wonder if we don’t sometimes lose sight of the fact that the Church is not mine, ours, or theirs – it’s Christ’s. And if it’s Christ’s, then we can take great solace in his words to St. Peter: “Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). So this process will rely, first and foremost, on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Equally important is the collective experience and wisdom of the members of the PAC. Our deliberations and discussions are being shaped to some degree by an excellent book, Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, by Sherry A. Weddell. I will share some of her insights here as we move forward. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
