Where did the term Catholic originate?
There are actually two variations of the word “catholic,” one with a lowercase “c” and one with
an uppercase “C.” The word “catholic” (with a lowercase C) comes from the Greek word katholou and means “universal.” So when we pray the Creed
at Mass and say that the Church is “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic,” we actually use the
lowercase version and express that the Church is universal. In the beginnings of the Church, the apostles referred to the Church as the catholic
Church, referencing its universality, but eventually the name began to stick as the Church’s official
name, which was when the uppercase version came about. By the 300s AD, the proper name had stuck
and became more common than its lowercase counterpart. However, the name is truly fitting,
highlighting one of the most important and beautiful aspects of the faith – its universality. No
matter where you go in the world, even if the language is different, the Mass is still the same, and
Catholics everywhere, no matter the culture or country they come from, share the same universal beliefs. We are all part of the same Body of Christ.

In order to fully participate in the sacrifice of the Mass, we ask that all parishioners sit in the church instead of standing in the Narthex. The Narthex is
simply the entrance to the church, functioning as the social gathering space before and after Mass, and
thus does not allow for full participation in the Mass. Our ushers are available to find you seats in the church, and we thank you for your cooperation.
