TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME – October 9, 2016

When do the bread and wine become the

Body and Blood of Christ?

The most important part of the Mass is when the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of

Christ, but do you even know when that happens? After we kneel following the Sanctus (the singing of

the “Holy, Holy, Holy”), the priest says a few prayers, takes the host in his hands, and then says

the following, based off of the words of Jesus Himself at the Last Supper: “Take this, all of you,

and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you.” It is at the moment that the priest says these words that the act of consecration, the bread becoming the Body of Christ, occurs. After saying these words, the priest elevates the host so all the

congregation can see and adore our Lord, and then does the same with the wine. Still afraid you’ll miss

the best part of the Mass? Listen closely for the gong; if there is an altar server at the Mass, he or she will ring the gong after the priest says the words of consecration, and you’ll know that Jesus is present.

* * * In our weekly “Did you know?” section, we’ll try to

explain “mysteries of the Mass” and other parts of the Catholic faith. If you have a question you’d like to

submit, please email [email protected].

Respect Life Society

October is Respect Life Month

40 Days for Life – Following God’s pattern of using 40 day periods to transform individuals, communities and the world, we will act for 40 days to end abortion. The campaign started Sept. 28 and will go until Nov. 6. Prayer is the foundation and sustaining power of every 40 Days for Life campaign. Pray for the babies, for the

parents who are scared and confused. Pray at Church, at home or wherever you are. Add fasting to your prayers – fast from food, coffee, from TV, or email. Fast from whatever it is that separates you from God. If

you can, participate in a peaceful vigil at Planned Parenthood in Danbury (44 Main St.) Choose an hour between 7 AM and 7 PM to pray, say the Rosary, or stand and pray in silence. For more info call Peg (628-8997) or log on to 40DaysforLife.com to learn more, find out when Danbury needs coverage, and sign up.

40 Days is sending a bus around the 50 states and holding Rallies at various spots. They stopped in Poughkeepsie on Sept. 30, in Danbury on Oct. 3 and in NYC on Oct. 4.

For more information and to join us, contact Peg Doherty (628-8997). 6
