The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima Part XIX
Apparition of our Lady on June 13, 1917
The next moment, Our Lady was there on the holmoak, exactly the same as in May.
“What do you want of me?” I asked.
“I wish you to come here on the 13th of next month, to pray the Rosary every day and after each mystery
pray: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins and save us from the fires of hell: take all souls to Heaven, espe-
cially those in most need of your mercy. I want you to learn to read. Later, I will tell you what I
want.”
I asked for the cure of a sick person.
“If he is converted, he will be cured during the year.”
Comment:
“What do you want of me?” We can reword the questions and ask: “What does our Lady want of us?” While
certainly different regarding specifics pertaining to the children, in general our Lady is asking all of us to “pray
the Rosary every day and after each mystery pray: O my Jesus …” But how is the question asked? Is it “What
do you want of me? I have come to listen and do whatever God asks.” Or is it “What do you want of me? I am
just curious as to what you have to say, but please don’t ask too much of me, I don’t really take this all too seri-
ously.” Our Lady is clear that she wants this message to be spread, it is not just for the children.
The “O my Jesus” prayer after each decade of the rosary is given to us for a reason. There is a serious danger of
souls going to hell. In the July apparition this point is going to be made in a very profound way. However, Fati-
ma is not about souls going to hell, but about preventing souls from going to hell and leading them to heaven.
Lucia does not know how to read and write yet, and for a poor peasant girl in 1917 rural Portugal she may never
have had been given a chance to learn. Since God has plans for Lucia to be the instrument to convey, teach, and
spread the message of Fatima, she will have to learn. “Later” is a reference to the July 13th message the follow-
ing month in 1917 and eventually the details of the devotion would be given much later, in July of 1929.
When Lucia asks for a cure of a sick person, our Lady says the person will be cured only IF he is converted.
Most likely this does not mean a conversion to Catholicism from another faith, but rather a conversion from sin.
Again, this question plays directly into the theme of the message of Fatima. How often do we beg God for a
cure, a miracle, a favor, but with no effort to conform our lives to the Gospel and His will? Why should we ex-
pect God to grant our prayers if we have no intention of heeding His message, converting from our sins, and sin-
cerely seeking holiness? Of course, God does grant miracles to sinners, but to convert them or in such a way as
not to confirm them in their sin. Our Lady’s answer bespeaks of a common theme of the message of Fatima: on
condition! The message of Fatima is: IF we str ive to live holy lives and stop offending God with our sins,
when the war (WWI) ends a worse war would be prevented and a time of peace would be granted to the world.
IF we don’t, then expect all hell to break loose (my wording). Hell, purgatory (even the length of purgato-
ry}, and heaven are contingent on the IF of our conversion from sin and a conversion to holiness.
Unfortunately, as history testifies, a worse war broke out (WWII) and the time of peace promised has been de-
layed. Her message was not heeded.
