from the pastor Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time – In today’s Gospel the zoom lens of our Lord focuses on one man. We learn a lot about this guy in just a few sentences. His name was Zacchaeus and he was a tax collector; normally an incredibly corrupt occupation. He was wealthy and curious. Zacchaeus was seeking to see who Jesus was. He was short in stature and energetic too. The word says that he ran ahead of the rest, climbed up a tree and came down in a hurry too. When Jesus called to him, Zacchaeus “came down quickly and received him with joy.” Jesus says “Today salvation has come to this home.” Zacchaeus repented in contrast to the rich man in the previous chapter of Luke. That unnamed man went away sad because his possessions were great and he was unable to bring about a change in his life. But Zacchaeuss’ experience leaves him with joy. Is the end result of God’s call to us joy or sadness? How do we respond? Next weekend is the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings at Mass are from 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14; 2 Thessalo-nians 2: 16 - 3:5; Luke 20: 27-38 (short form 20: 27, 34-38). All Saints Day is this Tuesday, November 1st and is a Holy Day of Obligation. There will not be a vigil Mass on Hallow-een. Masses will be at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday. All Souls Day is Wednesday, November 2nd. Mass will be celebrated at 6 p.m. During the Masses next Sunday we will have a special bless-ing for Veterans. The Liturgy Committee – will meet this Thursday, November 3rd, at 7 p.m. As we approach Thanksgiving, a new Liturgical Year, Advent and Christmas, this is an important meeting and all members are asked to be present. November 4th is the Feast of St. Char les Borromeo and the first Friday of the month. Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament will take place at the end of the 9 a.m. Mass with reposition at 5 p.m. November 5th is the first Saturday of the month. The rosary will be prayed at 8:40 a.m. for the deceased members of our families and friends. Mass will follow at 9 a.m. and you are cordially invited. Our Forward With Christ initiative is a resolve to do something with our aging and inadequate classrooms, social hall, offices, etc. Last week registered parishioners received letters and infor-mation about this initiative in the mail. This included a self ad-dressed and a stamped post card to RSVP for meetings which will begin next week. Parishioners are asked to fill out and mail those cards. DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! Faithful Service, Grateful Hearts - The 2016 Priest’s Retire-ment Collection – We are short $1,953.25. The 2nd collection this weekend has the hope of putting this collection/assessment to rest. Thank you for your generosity. All Souls Remembrance – Our beloved deceased’ names will be on the altar and remembered at all the Masses offered during the Month of November. Envelopes can be found on the tables as you leave church. Donations are purely voluntary. The names should be received by this Sunday, October 30th.

Mrs. Mary Brown: If you need to contact Mrs. Brown, Faith Formation Director, please call or text 704-929-0152 or email her at [email protected] or if you need to contact Mrs. Norma Echevarria please call the office at 704-872-2579 or email her at [email protected]. Faith Formation students in 1st, 2nd, 8th & 9th grades will need to get mass cards signed. The Mass cards will be kept in the Faith Formation office. After each Mass there will be a representative in the lobby to sign cards. The student must be present to have the card signed. First Communion & Confir-mation candidates who do not have 25 signatures by the end of the FF year will be unable to participate in First Communion or Confirmation. The Christmas Pageant is off to an excellent star t thanks to the hard work of a dedicated volunteer team! We will have a traditional reenactment of the birth of Jesus with carols in Eng-lish and Spanish. We need lots of children of all ages to make this production a success. Rehearsals will start Thursday, No-vember 3rd at 6:30 p.m. The other rehearsals will be on Thurs-days through November ( Not including Thanksgiving) and the first three Thursdays in December. All rehearsals will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be about an hour. The pageant will be pre-formed on Sunday, December 18th @ 3:00 p.m. followed by a holiday reception with sweets, treats and hot chocolate. In ad-dition to the children, we will also need volunteers to help with costumes, staging and the reception. This is a great opportunity for Confirmation candidates to earn service hours. We hope to make this family event a yearly tradition for all our families at St. Philips’!
