Second Sunday of Lent March 8, 2020 Christ Jesus ... destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. — 2 Timothy 1:10b
CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD said to Abram: All the families of the earth shall find blessing in you (Genesis 12:1-4a) Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — God has called us to a holy life, not because of our works but according to grace (2 Timothy 1:8b-10). Gospel — Atop a high mountain, Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John (Matthew 17:1-9). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Dn 9:4b-10; Ps 79:8, 9, 11, 13; Lk 6:36-38 Tuesday: Is 1:10, 16-20; Ps 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mt 23:1-12 Wednesday: Jer 18:18-20; Ps 31:5-6, 14-16; Mt 20:17-28 Thursday: Jer 17:5-10; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 16:19-31 Friday: Gn 37:3-4, 12-13a; 17b-28a; Ps 105:16-21; Mt 21:33-43, 5-46 Saturday: Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Ps 103:1-4, 9-12; Lk 15:1-3, 11-32 Sunday: Ex 17:3-7; Ps 95:1-2, 6-9; Rom 5:1-2, 5-8; Jn 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42] SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Second Sunday of Lent; Daylight Saving Time begins; International Women’s Day Monday: St. Frances of Rome; Purim (Jewish observance) begins at sunset Friday: Abstinence

Dear Parishioners LENTEN OBSERVANCES … A reminder: During Lent we will have Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesdays, beginning immediately after the noon Mass, with Benediction and Reposition at 6:30 PM. Drop in at any time, especially on your way home from work, and add some silent prayer time with the Lord to your hectic day. Please remember to observe a prayerful silence while present before Our Lord, waiting to feel his voice, and so as not to interfere with the prayers of others. Also, Stations of the Cross will take place during the Fridays of Lent; 6 PM in English, and after the 7 PM Mass in Spanish. Please join your brothers and sisters in the Lord for this very special prayer recalling and joining Our Lord in His final day, leading up to His crucifixion. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE … During Lent, a few of our Lenten Observances revolve around fasting and abstinence. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church (that's us), the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. SPANISH LENTEN RETREAT … St. Raymond’s Parish will be having a Spanish Lenten Retreat on Saturday, March 14 from 2PM -5PM for the entire community. All are invited to take time out of their day to dedicate it to the Lord in prayer. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS … Our Knights of Columbus council is looking for more members. If you are a man who is interested in furthering his faith, and putting his faith to work, please contact Raymond 917-213-8517 or Jose 718-433-6075. YOUTH MINISTRY … Our Parish Youth Ministry is up and running. Our parish and elementary school children who attend middle school are welcome to drop in from 3PM–5PM on Mondays. Our parish children of high school age and those children who attend either of our high schools are welcome to drop in on Tuesdays from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM and to attend the Youth Ministry Program on Fridays from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. They will meet in the Lower Church in the Youth Room. For more information please contact Sister Faustina Ferko at (929)436-3200 or [email protected] . PLEASE SUPPORT OUR BULLETIN ADVERTISERS ... we are grateful to the many businesses and offices that advertise and support the printing of our Sunday bulletin ... please consider patronizing them and tell them you saw their ad in our Sunday bulletin. MASS INTENTIONS … you can remember a family member or friend with an intention at a specific Mass come to the rectory for a specific date … the offering is $15 and Mass cards are available with each Mass … the intentions can be for a living or deceased person … intentions are printed in the bulletin. MASS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED ... The last Sunday of each month we have Mass at 12 noon with sign language ... pass on the word to relatives and friends who might be interested ... sign language is beautiful and inspiring to watch. RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we
receive Holy Communion either in our hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other, or, in our mouths, by sticking out our tongues to receive in the mouth. Both ways are valid. Understand if you are carrying a child in your arms, and both hands are not free, the priest will most likely want you to receive in the mouth. This is to limit the possibility of our Lord, in the form of the Eucharist, falling to the ground. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters. VISITING OF THE SICK OR HOMEBOUND … If you know of anyone who is sick or homebound and would like to receive communion, Please call the rectory to give us your information as well as the information of the person who wishes to receive communion. They must reside in our parish area.
The Stations of the Cross will take place during the Fridays of Lent at 6 PM in English and in Spanish after the 7 PM Mass.
Queridos Feligreses, OBSERVACIONES DE CUARESMA ...
