Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 6, 2019 Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us. — Psalm 95:6

A LITTLE FAITH Today our readings are about faith, frustration, and how much is enough. Habakkuk is a complainer having an argument with God. Timothy is encouraging a community challenged by cowardice and the apostles want more faith than they have. Things aren’t happening fast enough for any of them or for us. All of them and we want God to do something sooner rather than later and we want God to give us a reason to believe that it will all work out. What does God do? God puts it back on them—and us—telling Habakkuk to describe the world he wants; telling the apostles to do more than the expected. Doing more with less is a familiar phrase today and a reminder that a little faith may be enough even for the most difficult times. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading—The just ones, because of their faith, shall live (Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4). Psalm—If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading — Bear hardship with the strength that comes from God (2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14). Gospel—The apostles said to Jesus, “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:5-10). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Jon 1:1 — 2:2, 11; Jon 2:3-5, 8; Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 130:1b-4ab, 7-8; Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Jon 4:1-11; Ps 86:3-6, 9-10; Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Mal 3:13-20b; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Jl 1:13-15; 2:1-2; Ps 9:2-3, 6, 16, 8-9; Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Jl 4:12-21; Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12; Lk 11:27-28 Sunday: 2 Kgs 5:14-17; Ps 98:1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lk 17:11-19 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time; Respect Life Sunday Monday: Our Lady of the Rosary Tuesday: Yom Kippur (Jewish Day of Atonement) begins at sundown Wednesday: St. Denis and Companions; St. John Leonardi Friday: St. John XXIII Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

Dear Parishioners BLOOD DRIVE – Thank you Cathy Ryall and all those who either gave blood, or assisted in the Blood Drive. And now, a word of thanks from Cathy: Our September Blood Drive was very successful! We had 45 donors stop by to give the gift of life! Special thanks go to our parish volunteers: Joanne Lewis, Rosa Rifas, and Cathy Ryall; and to these members of Saint Raymond’s Council of the Knights of Columbus: Jose DeJesus, Joseph Malave, Raymond Miranda, Clarence Roman, and Stanley Yuquilima, who continue their ministry for our parish. THANK YOU … Thank you to all those who gave to the Seminary Collection last week. Also, thank you to all those who purchased at the Mexican Food Feast, helping to support the Our Lady of Guadalupe festivities in December. A special thanks to all those who prepared the food. And finally, thanks to all those who contributed food to our annual Feast of St. Raymond. Unfortunately, the turn-out was very low, and a lot of food went unconsumed, but that in no way detracts from your generosity. God bless you all. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS AND LECTORS … There will be a meeting for all Extraordinary Ministers of The Eucharist and Lectors, on Tuesday, October 8, at 6:30pm. We will meet in the Church. COLUMBUS DAY ... Monday, October 14 … the schools and rectory offices are closed ... there is only one Mass at 9 am in the church. ADULT FAITH FORMATION … Bishop Robert Barron’s “The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters” from October 21 through December 2. Meetings will be every Monday from 7:00pm to 8:30pm in the Girls Academy Cafeteria. Please come to the rectory to fill out a registration form before October 13. Cost: $15 … For more information, please contact Sister Liliann I.P.C. at 718-792-4044, ext. 2238. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS … Our Knights of Columbus council is looking for more members. If you are a man who is interested in furthering his faith, and putting his faith to work, please contact Bill Venturini at 347-309-1056. YOUTH MINISTRY … Our Parish Youth Ministry is up and running. Our parish and elementary school children who attend middle school are welcome to drop in from 3PM– 5PM on Mondays. Our parish children of high school age and those children who attend either of our high schools are welcome to drop in on Tuesdays from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM and to attend the Youth Ministry Program on Fridays from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. They will meet in the Lower Church in the Youth Room. For more information please contact Sister Faustina Ferko at (929)436-3200 or [email protected]. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR BULLETIN ADVERTISERS ... we are grateful to the many businesses and offices that advertise and support the printing of our Sunday bulletin ... please consider patronizing them and tell them you saw their ad in our Sunday bulletin. MASS INTENTIONS … you can remember a family member or friend with an intention at a specific Mass come to the rectory for a specific date … the offering is $15 and Mass cards are available with each Mass … the intentions can be for a living or deceased person … intentions are printed in the bulletin. MASS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED ... The last Sunday of each month we have Mass at 12 noon with sign language ... pass on the word to relatives and friends who might be interested ... sign language is beautiful and inspiring to watch.

RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we receive Holy Communion either in our hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other, or, in our mouths, by sticking out our tongues to receive in the mouth. Both ways are valid. Understand if you are carrying a child in your arms, and both hands are not free, the priest will most likely want you to receive in the mouth. This is to limit the possibility of our Lord, in the form of the Eucharist, falling to the ground. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters. VISITING OF THE SICK OR HOMEBOUND … If you know of anyone who is sick or homebound and would like to receive communion, Please call the rectory to give us your information as well as the information of the person who wishes to receive communion. They must reside in our parish area.

(Lucas 17:5-10). LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Jon 1:1 — 2:2, 11; Jon 2:3-5, 8; Lc 10:25-37 Martes: Jon 3:1-10; Sal 130 (129):1b-4ab, 7-8; Lc 10:38-42 Miércoles: Jon 4:1-11; Sal 86 (85):3-6, 9-10; Lc 11:1-4 Jueves: Mal 3:13-20b; Sal 1:1-4, 6; Lc 11:5-13 Viernes: Jl 1:13-15; 2:1-2; Sal 9:2-3, 6, 16, 8-9; Lc 11:15-26 Sábado: Jl 4:12-21; Sal 97 (96):1-2, 5-6, 11-12; Lc 11:27-28 Domingo: 2 Re 5:14-17; Sal 98 (97):1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lc 17:11-19 LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES Domingo: Vigésimo Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario; Domingo Respetemos la Vida Lunes: Nuestra Señora del Rosario Martes: Yom Kipur (festivad judía conocida como Día del Perdón) comienza a la puesta del sol Miércoles: San Dionisio y compañeros; San Juan Leonardi Viernes: San Juan XXIII Sábado: Santa María Virgen
