First Sunday of Advent December 1, 2019

FOCUS: Advent is a time to prepare for the Lord.

In this season of Advent, we remember our place in salva-tion history. We remember that we, who again and again break the covenant established with God, are offered salva-tion through that same God who came as a baby to live, suffer, die and rise so that we may live forever with him. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Isaiah prophesies that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established and raised, and that instruction shall come out from Zion. Then God will judge between nations. St. Paul warns the Romans that salvation is imminent, and that they should cast off sin and darkness and choose to lie in the light of Jesus Christ. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to his disciples about the people of Noah’s time who were living carelessly when the flood came, and warns that as it was then, so it is for them. They must be watchful and ready, for God will come at an hour they do not expect. REFLECTION: As we begin Advent we are asked to re-flect on Christ’s "second coming." Not just reflect, but live in ways that show we expect his return and are doing what we must to prepare for him when he does come. If we are peo-ple who tend to put things off the gospel has an urgency about it, to stir us to action now. So we ask ourselves:

    • What disruptive and wasteful patterns must we address during this Advent time of preparation for Christ?

    • In the spirit of Advent how are we looking for Christ in our daily lives?

The Beginning of the Year of Grace ~ 2020 With the First Sunday of Advent begins the new year of the Church 2020. The lectionary cycles are as follows:

Year A: Sunday cycle Cycle II: Weekday cycle in Ordinary Time

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament In Celebration of Our Centennial

    Saturday—December 7 8:30am—4:45pm

Lower Church The Chapel will be closed while ado-ration is in church. All are welcome to come and spend some quiet time with the Lord.

Advent Wreath The wreath is created out of evergreens which symbolize everlasting life in the midst of win-ter. The circle reminds us of God’s unending love and the eternal life He makes possible. Advent candles are nestled in the evergreen wreath. Additional decorations, such as holly and berries are added. Their red color points ahead to Jesus’ sacrifice and death on the cross, shedding his blood for our sins. Pinecones symbolize the new life that Jesus brings through His resurrection. Advent candles shine brightly in the midst of darkness, symbolizing and reminding us that Jesus came as Light into our dark world. The first candle symbolizes HOPE and is called the “Prophet’s Candle.’ The prophets of the Old Testament waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival.
