Holy Week 2020

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

As we approach Holy Week, the time to reflect on the greatest mysteries of our Faith, we find ourselves in the middle of the COVID-19. I am sure many ques-tions come to mind. The reality is that we have been called to continue our trust in God and the Mysteries we celebrate in Holy Week which go beyond our churches. I recommend checking CatholicPhilly.com as your main contact for Holy Week Services.

Palm Sunday is the triumphal entrance of Jesus in Jerusalem. His entrance took place about 2000 years ago, but His presence remains with us. We still claim Jesus to be our Lord and Savior in the middle of this coronavirus spread almost all over the world. Blessed palm “is a sacramental rich in power to re-mind all of us of Christ’s victory over sin and death. It certainly has special signif-icance during the pandemic.”

Holy Thursday reminds us of the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. Traditionally is called the Last Supper. The Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Holy Thursday by the Archbishop and the Holy Oils will be distributed to parishes at a later time. The Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper begins the sacred triduum and will be celebrated by priests privately without a congregation.

The liturgy for Good Friday, also to be celebrated privately, features prominent-ly a long list of solemn intercession prayers for the needs of the world. This year a plea for relief from the pandemic appears in a prayer approved by Archbishop Nelson Perez, following the suggestion of the USCCB, as the 11th intercession: “For an end to the pandemic: Let us pray, dearly beloved, for a swift end to the coronavirus pandemic that afflicts our world, that our God and Father will heal the sick, strengthen those who care for them, and help us all to persevere in faith.”

Holy Saturday, is normally a somber period of reflection on the death of Jesus, followed by the holiest night of the liturgical year: the Easter Vigil Mass celebrat-ing the resurrection of Christ. The private celebration of the Mass this year will omit the reception of Catholics into the church through the sacraments, but will be deferred to another time.

Easter Sunday is the celebration of Jesus Resurrection. Easter Masses also will be celebrated privately in parish churches, and presumably streamed from them via the internet where possible. Approximately, 42 parishes and shrines in the Philadelphia Archdiocese are making private daily and Sunday Masses available along with other liturgies and devotions via livestreamed video on parish websites and Facebook pages. I urge you to visit CatholicPhilly.com for a list.

Palm Sunday ~ The Passion of the Lord

April 5, 2020

FOCUS: We recall and commemorate the events of our

salvation as we begin Holy Week.

As we remember the suffering and death of Jesus, we are

drawn more deeply into the mystery of God’s steadfast love

for all humanity: God so loved the world that he sent his

only Son that all may be saved.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Saint Matthew writes of

Jesus’ celebrated entry into Jerusalem, where some of the

very large crowd … cut branches from the trees and strewed

them on the road. Isaiah prophesies of one who will speak

to the weary a word that will rouse them. Paul writes to the

Philippians about the total self-giving of Christ and his exal-

tation by the Father. In the Gospel, Matthew gives his ac-

count of the last hours of Jesus, including their Passover

meal, his betrayal, and his passion, death, and burial.

REFLECTION: Isaiah suggests that our first responsibility

isn’t to speak, but to listen. God’s gift of a "well-trained

tongue" comes because "God opens my ear that I may

hear." If our words are to bear fruit they must come from the

silence we observe as we listen for God’s Word. Lent is a

good time to train ourselves to listen better – to God and

those around us each day.

So we ask ourselves:

Do I consider myself a good listener?

What do those closest to me say about my listening

skill?

Find free meals for students while schools are closed www.phila.gov/COVID-19 “youth meal sites”

To ensure that students can still have nutritious meals while all schools are closed, the School District of Philadelphia, several charter schools, and the Philadelphia Housing Authority are coordi-nating with the City’s Office of Children and Families to provide grab-and-go meals for children and youth throughout the city.

Meals are available from 9 a.m. to noon only on Mondays and Thursdays. All children and youth are eligible, and no ID is re-quired. Families will receive 6 meals per student—3 breakfasts and 3 lunches.

All schools within the School District of Philadelphia will be closed through at least April 6, 2020.

Here are some nearby schools offering meals:

Barton School (4600 Rosehill St.) 19120

Thomas Finletter School (6100 N. Front St.) 19120

Benjamin Franklin School (5737 Rising Sun Ave. ) 19120

Thurgood Marshall School (5120 N. 6th St. ) 19120

Northeast High School (1601 Cottman Ave.) 19111

Grover Washington Middle School (201 E. Olney Ave. ) 19120

Every Home is a Domestic Church According to the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic

Constitution on the Church: “The family, is so to speak, the

domestic church.” (Lumen Gentium #11) This means that it

is in the context of the family that we first learn who God is

and to prayerfully seek His will for us. In the following bullet

points you will find some suggestions on how to build your

“domestic church” through a life of prayer that can help all

the members of your family.

Begin praying as a family and reading from Scripture daily,

pray a Family Rosary (each member leads a decade, and

everyone shares intentions). Have a crucifix in a prominent

place in the home, and in every bedroom. Begin family tradi-

tions based on the seasons celebrated in the liturgical calen-

dar. Make your vacation a holy pilgrimage by visiting the

shrines and saints of our land and the world.

Celebrate Holy Week in your Home

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Holy Week Services have

been cancelled for 2020. However, we have an excellent

opportunity to celebrate Holy Week and Easter in our own

home.

We have never imagined that the current coronavirus

gives us a new view of our faith in God and the church and

an additional understanding of Holy Week and Easter for all

of us. We can enjoy our faith despite difficult times in our

world.

We can find ways to mark the seasons in our homes in a

sacred way.

For example, households might

wash each other’s hands or feet on

Holy Thursday before you have

dinner.

On Good Friday, pray the Stations and

venerate a cross.

On the Vigil of Easter or on

Easter Sunday plan a family

dinner.

Gather pictures of your fami-

ly when each member re-

ceived the Sacraments, such

as Baptism, First Holy Com-

munion and Confirmation. Then, before the meal, offer a

prayer of thanksgiving for all the blessings you have received

and pray for the people who are sick now from the Corona-

virus.

Happy Easter!

Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me

to be separated from You.

There will be numerous opportunities to

watch Holy Week services on TV.
