Church of the Ascension of the Lord Balally Parish 21st July 2019 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time The Deep End : Martha and Mary Jesus visits the home of Martha. For such a short Gospel passage, this text has created much discussion among biblical scholars. It seems everyone is this story is breaking the rules: Jesus rebukes his host, Mary does not help her sister, and Martha is not sitting at Jesusfeet like a good disciple. Lukes gospel is all about reversal’: what you expect to happen does not happen, often the opposite happens! Confused? Mary is positioned here as a disciple learning from her Teacher. Martha as one who is trying to serve through many tasks.Throughout his Gospel, Luke places a special emphasis on the wider circle of Jesusdisciples, and names the women who follow Him. Luke is perhaps reminding us in this text that being a follower of Jesus requires an upset of the norms and a reversal of roles. This story occurs in Luke immediately after the Good Samaritan, where the importance of service and action are clearly emphasised. It seems unfair that Martha is being told off for serving those who come to her. If Jesus arrived with a hungry entourage, what host would not be stressed out! Jesus frees Martha from these duties, not because they are not important, but so that she too can be nourished by him. Frantic activity is never good or sustainable for Let todays Gospel be a reminder that when we are bogged down in the craziness around us, we can sit and listen to Him. Then we may be better prepared for the challenges that we face, whether they be in our homes or our wider communities. k:

Jesus entered a village where a woman

whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary.

Fussy Martha readied the table,

cooked the whole meal, poured good-enough wine.

Resting-Mary

sat herself down at his feet. The sound of his voice,

stilled her heart and filled

her soul.

O Jesus, call us to rest at your feet and hear;

to share for a while with you that one thing that is

necessary.

Let us feast on it as we bustle

about on our

days! Christ those who suffer with you

will “flame out like shining from shook foil.” Help us to shine, and, be with us—

if we should agree to share in your

suffering for others

Jesus, Our Friend

“Martha, Martha,” Jesus said, “you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one.” The level of stress and anxie-ty is very high for so many people in today’s world. Today Jesus wants us, as his followers, to look at this and do something about it. It’s about setting priorities. One very important priority for all of us is our health of body, mind and spirit. It takes time to care for ourselves properly but it is time well spent. Another priority that is vital is our close relationships of marriage and fami-ly. How easily those get put to one side because of all the other things and people in our lives. We are called to put these right this week. The only way to do this is by giving our loved ones time and attention. and a third priority is the kingdom of God, which is a kingdom of peace, joy, love, wonderment, caring for the poor and needy. If we are taking care of all these, everything else will fall into place Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Volunteers: St Vincent De Paul urgently need volunteers in the areas of Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare to work in assistance with individuals and families for just once a week. New Pilgrim Path Website of the Week. “At Prayer with Thomas Merton” presents daily prayers for dawn and dusk, drawn from the writings of the great 20th century

Trappist Mystic, Thomas Merton, interwoven with excerpts set to music composed by the sacred music composer (and president of the International Thomas Merton Society), Kathleen Deignan, C.N.D. God’s wonderful Creation

I have just been watching the coverage of Man’s landing on the moon 50 years ago. I remember the night vividly. We had visitors staying that night and we were all glued to our small television that night. It was a rented television and we had a gadget called a pair of ears which we would have to manoeuvre around every time we lost the picture. Of course it was all in black and white. It was a moment in history. A moment to remember. Looking at tonight’s viewing I never knew that Buzz Aldrin had brought a Holy Communion Host with him. It was very touching to see him recognising God’s wonderful creation by this gesture. Yes indeed we have a beautiful world to live in. The glorious Sun ( however elusive at times) and the moon and stars to brighten up the sky at night. All this is God’s precious gift to us. We are all aware of the damage been done to our world from the effects of global change. But it is very heartening to see that people are coming together to do their best to try and halt this damage. More and more people are letting their lawns grow longer covered in beautiful daisy’s and butter-cups. Councils are setting aside various patches to grow in a similar fashion. Schoolchildren are organising clean ups of plastic on our beaches to protect our sea life. Although our congregations at Mass may be declining you can see the hand of God at work in different ways. We are all becoming more aware of the beauty of our earth and the wonderful fruit it bears. Our very existence relies on it. Yes indeed, we give thanks to God. Anne Schmitz

A visiting Holy Ghost Missionary Priest will

speak at both Masses next Sunday 28th July

about his own mission experiences and the

HOW CAN I HELP MY PARISH?

the Nine Tings you can do:

1. Active participation in the liturgies : Going to Mass, praying with the community, singing at the top of your voice and not dozing during Fr Peter’s monologues.. (this last one is optional)

2. Being a Welcomer: Our parish is a family of families, it is a community of communities. We have to try and get to know each other. All of us can be “Welcomers” be willing to say hello to a new face, make an effort to go to the coffee dock to meet other members of the community, be par-ticularly gentle with the very young, the elderly or those who have a dif-ferent accent or those who come visiting. A smile, a hand shake, a few friendly words have no cost and cannot be taxed. Being a Welcomer is good for your health.

3. Engaging in some form of formation (forgive the pun): The mindfulness, the Scripture courses, theology courses, liturgy courses … we should all be updating our Christian knowledge and our skills in the fields of prayer and liturgy. A community that continually educates itself in the faith will be able to provide answers that society needs of them.

4. Offering input on one of the committees or Boards: The Parish needs guidance and governance and that is provided in many forms: The Parish Pastoral Council, the Finance Committee, the Board of Management of the Centre, the Liturgy Committee, the BOM of the two schools are just some of the ways that Parish is steered though the vicissitudes of day to day life.

5. Avidly reading the bulletin or going on the website. The bulletin is pro-duced each week and contains information about the Parish, future events and diocesan life.

6. Contributing to the parish through the Family offering and the 400 club. How do we finance the operation of the Parish? The biggest contributors are the Family Offering (envelope, Standing order) and the 400 Club. These enable the parish to pay salaries, to upgrade installations and to keep ourselves warm.

7. Making suggestions: Since the suggestion boxes were installed we have had some very helpful insights and suggestions. You might spot a detail that no one else has seen, or you might have an initiative , or there might be an issue that needs to be aired. All suggestions are brought to the Parish Council meetings for further action.

8. Becoming a volunteer: the last count was 34 ministries/groups in the Parish. The very backbone and life of Balally is and has been the ownership and involvement of the volunteers. There must be one for you…. or two.

9. Health, Safety and Cleanliness are the responsibility of all of us. Picking up that paper, opening that door, putting things back in their place, being careful while parking… are just a few examples of how we can help in Health/Safety/ Cleanliness.

In Our Parish is where we sustain our Christian life. All of us contribute to this life through our sacramental participation and prayer, through our commitment to follow the Gospel and by the giving of our time, our talents

and our treasures
