Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word

The mission of the early church comes to a pivotal

juncture today: Paul and Barnabas begin to preach to

the Gentiles. If they are to “be instrument(s) of salva-

tion to the ends of the earth,” they must reach out be-

yond the synagogues. After all, the Good Shepherd, as

Jesus is portrayed in today’s Gospel, gathers all to him-

self. Indeed, all of us “are his people, the sheep of his

flock.”

Do I try to hear Jesus’ voice in the voices of those I

encounter? Through whom is Jesus speaking to me?

La misión de la Iglesia primitive llega hoy a un mo-

mento crucial: Pablo y Bernabé comienzan a predi-

carle a los paganos. Si esos paganos llegarán a ser in-

strumentos de “la salvación hasta los últimos rincones

de la tierra”, van a tener que ir más allá de las sina-

gogas. Después de todo, el Buen Pastor, que es como

Jesús se describe a sí mismo en el Evangelio de hoy, va

a atraer a todas las ovejas hacia él. En efecto, todos

nosotros “somos su pueblo y su rebaño”.

¿Trato de oír la voz de Jesús en las voces de aquellas

personas con las que me encuentro? ¿A través de quie-

nes me habla Jesús?

ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR

SEPTEMBER CLASSES

Faith Formation Office is accepting Registrations

for classes to start in September of 2019. Classes are at the

school building located at 86-37 53rd Avenue and are held on

Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., from September

through May.

A new registration must be completed for all present stu-

dents as well as new students to attend our program. Parents

must bring the following documents when registering:

- Baptism Certificate

- Birth Certificate, if child is not baptized

- A Parish Transfer letter is required if child attended

another parish

interested in volunteering for the Faith Formation Program,

The NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy is one of sev-

eral innovative, effective programs that the Department

provides for young people in New York City. The program

gives young individuals between the ages of 10 and 15 the

opportunity to train with police officers during the summer.

Participants attend the Youth Police Academy in the bor-

ough of their residence, five days a week for six weeks,

from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Police Officers conduct

classes that include lectures, role-plays, and demonstrations

in the area of law, behavioral science, drug prevention and

gang resistance. The program also provides participants

with lunch, uniform shirts, and field trips.
