Reflections from Father John

In today’s Gospel from Luke the congregation that was listening to Jesus read from the scroll the passage from Isaiah and then to complete it by adding, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing,” could have only meant two things to do those who were listening. The first interpretation could have been, “He (Jesus) is reminding us that God’s spirit is with us all and that these days will be blessed because of God’s presence among us.” The other interpretation could have been a more literal one, i.e. is He saying He is the fulfillment of that passage? Does He mean to tell us He is the anointed one? Yes and yes!

That is why just a little bit later Jesus says, “Surely you will quote me this passage, physician heal yourself.” He says this so there could be no mistake He was speaking literally, i.e. He (Jesus) is the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God on earth.

Many did not understand that yet in Jesus’ time, others would eventually come to believe through Jesus’ words and actions proving He was the Messiah. We all have come to believe it since we are here worshipping. Nevertheless, Jesus still says to us right here and right now, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” It begs the question of us, do we believe it and if yes, then do we also help bring about the kingdom of God in this world?

For some, to bring about the kingdom here on earth means, attending mass and prayer. That is just one component. We are to bring the kingdom to others through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, especially this Jubilee Year of Mercy. As a reminder for all of us here they are in an easy list we can remember.

The Corporal Works of Mercy feed the hungry give drink to the thirsty clothe the naked shelter the homeless visit the sick visit the imprisoned bury the dead

The Spiritual Works of Mercy counsel the doubtful instruct the ignorant admonish sinners comfort the afflicted forgive offenses bear wrongs patiently pray for the living and the dead

The Knights of Columbus Sancta Familia Council express deep appreciation of parishioners who supported their recent fundraiser at Chick-Fil-A. All proceeds generated from the event will be used to purchase “My First Missal” for our First Communicants.

Not everyone is drawn to the same works, some love to visit

the sick while others are more like teachers and gravitate

towards instructing the ignorant or counseling the doubtful.

During this great Jubilee year we really need to look at these

works, one at a time and try to practice them as best we can,

again some may be more to our suiting but also the Lord may

be pulling us out of our comfort zone. Either way please pray

about it and incorporate them into your life, they help build

virtue and holiness and give us great joy knowing that we are

being Christ to someone. We are bringing about the kingdom

so that no matter what we are doing and where we are doing

it we can say along with our Lord, “Today this Scripture is

fulfilled in your hearing.”

God bless you,

Fr. John

Knights of Columbus Sancta Familia Council # 11498 is again offering scholarships to parishioners. The scholarships will be awarded to 8th graders entering a Catholic high school, high school seniors entering any college, as well as college students entering their 2nd, 3rd or 4th years of college study. Applications may be obtained from any Knight, and at the doors of the church. All completed applications must be postmarked by March 18, 2016. For further information, call (856) 589-3432.

Knights to Offer Scholarships

We’ve listened and heard…In response to busy family schedules we will offer a non-traditional classroom setting that meets every other week with a small assignment during the off weeks. The children will have a homeroom and two other rotations utilizing the talents of more than one teacher. One station will have Bible stories with activities, another will have catechetical lessons with games and hands-on experiences, and at a third station the children can respond to all they have learned with an artistic project. Each evening will begin and end with prayer time with homeroom teachers.

It is our hope that the children (and parents) will be excited about their class and their faith. The program is developed so the children will learn more than ever and have fun while they learn.

Please pray about and consider this option. Stop in the office and discuss it with our staff. Also, as always, please consider being part of our teaching team. It is our hope to create an option for our families that is conducive to today’s family life. Faith and family are number one!

Registration will begin in a few weeks.

SUPPORT FOR THE HEARTS ON THE MEND: GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP AT HOLY FAMILY

We all have experienced losses in our life. The normal and natural reaction to any significant emotional loss is grief. And grief hurts! We need support and help to get through these times. Grief Support Groups help us cope with the loss of a loved one by being with people who share similar experiences. They also journey with us in rebuilding our lives and provide us with a safe environment and the accurate informa-tion about grief and grief recovery.

The support group will meet for eight weeks on Thursdays, beginning January 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fausto Conference Room. Whether your grief is new and raw or lingering and unresolved, these sessions will help you to heal and move toward peace and acceptance of the absence of the loved one in your life. If you are someone who has lost a dear one to death; we welcome you to join for these sessions.

For more information, please call the parish office, 856-228-1616, or email Deacon Joe at [email protected]
