Dear Friends,Happy Palm Sunday! But why is Palm Sunday happy if this is the day Jesus entered Jerusalem with the knowledge that this would be the beginning of the end for him? In simple terms, the reason why Palm Sunday is a good day is because Jesus enters Jerusalem to complete the will of his (our) Father in heaven. This is not the beginning of the end, but an entirely new beginning. Jesus must first suffer and die to experience the resurrection. Please try your best to embrace and enter into this most sacred week of the year: Holy Week.I also take this time to thank you, the people of the parish, who support our parish in every way. This is a collective effort and the only way to do it is to work together. Some of you do this by giving generously at the weekly collections. Some by volunteering your time. And some do both. I am very grateful to all who support the parish and I try to make this clear on a regular basis. The reason we have a parish, and the reason the Catholic Church exists, is to continue these great traditions of Holy Week. To proclaim and teach the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through the Church, we proclaim and teach the love of God. The mission of Jesus, and every single thing he did, was to give us an understanding of our faith and our salvation. He wants us to get to heaven and he shows us the way. “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” Please come and be part of this awesome experience. Please see the bulletin for the Holy week schedule. On another note, I want everyone to have an opportunity to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation here at Holy Spirit Parish. Confession is 100% confidential and this is a great way to ‘clear the slate’ and start all over. Anything can be forgiven! Please feel comfortable coming to confession. This Monday, tomorrow Monday March 21st, we have confessions here for 8 consecutive hours: 2:00 P.M. – 10:00 P.M. The schedule is: Father Lachlan Cameron from 2:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. Fr. Grieco from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. and Father Nick Zientarski from 7:00 P.M. – 10:00 P.M. Be assured of my prayers for a blessed and holy week.Fr. Grieco

We have been hearing a lot about the “Year of Mercy”. As often happens, we know a little about it, but perhaps wonder what we should be doing to engage more fully in the great Jubilee Year. Is it meant for people who have been ‘away’ from the Church….is it intended to bring ‘sinners’ back into the fold…..is it to offer ‘the faithful’ additional opportunities to be graced? The answer to those questions is …Yes…Yes…and again…Yes!

A Jubilee Year in the Jewish tradition would occur every 50 years. The number 7 was an important number for Jews and much of their life revolved around a seven year cycle. For those who are good in math...what is 7 times 7? The answer of course is 49. So after the 49th year, the year 50 became a very special year. It became a time for the people to put behind them, everything that was getting in the way of their relation-ships. Relationships with family…relationships with friends…relationship with God.

The Jubilee Year became the year when people forgave each other for anything….real or imagined …that had caused a problem in the relationship. What a great idea! Of course an even better idea is not to wait fifty years to straighten things out….but hey…better late than never. The whole point of the Jubilee Year is for us to look inwardly and take stock of what we need to do to repair the issues in our lives that need atten-tion.

To strengthen us for the work we need to do….and let’s be honest…we all have work to do…. The Church of-fers us opportunities to receive additional graces this year. A few weeks ago I mentioned the Holy Doors in our diocese. The Holy Doors offer us entry into a new phase in life. We pass through the door….we go to confes-sion and receive absolution…..we pray before the Blessed Sacrament. What a beautiful opportunity to draw closer to God and be graced with a desire to restore the relationships that have drifted apart. The story below is a profound example of mercy at work…both God’s Mercy…and the mercy we show each other.

I read a wonderful story last week about a man who for us, was without a doubt, beyond the reach of God’s mercy. Thankfully, God does not think the way we do….or we would all be in trouble! The man was Rudolph Hoss. He was, for three years, the Commandant of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. During his time there he presided over the deaths of more than three million people mostly Jews. But the camp was not only for Jews. Catholics, such as Saints Maximilian Kolbe and Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), were mur-dered here also. There was in addition a group of Jesuits who lived nearby. They were rounded up and brought to the camp. Their superior was away at the time and missed being captured. On his return he went to the camp and asked to be imprisoned with his brothers. Commandant Hoss, for some reason refused to take him into the camp. The priest’s name was Father Władysław Lohn.

Fast forward. Hoss is awaiting execution for war crimes. He was to be executed at Auschwitz…..the scene of his crimes. He had been raised Catholic but had fallen away from the faith. He was surprised how well he was treated by the guards in prison…..many of whom had lost family members at Auschwitz. It was a moment of conversion for Hoss. The guards treated him mercifully. Mercy ……is the love we know we do not deserve. He didn’t deserve their forgiveness or their kindness…and yet the guards showed him both. He asked for a priest. Hoss wanted to confess his sins before he died. Without wishing to create scandal…. I have to tell you that the guards had trouble finding a priest who was willing to hear his confession. So soon after the end of the war, there were many open wounds. For many people, he was considered to be beyond redemption. Then Hoss remembered the name of the priest whom he refused to accept at Auschwitz. He asked his guards to find Father Władysław, and after some searching they did. He was…incredibly…..chaplain at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Krakow.

Father Władysław Lohn spent a long time hearing Hoss’ confession. We will never know what was said because of the seal of confession, but for Father Władysław…this was the man who murdered his brother priests…and yet for some strange reason….had spared his life. Hoss received absolution for his sins. The following day Fa-ther Władysław returned to the prison with the Eucharist. Those who witnessed it said that Hoss received Holy Communion with tears in his eyes and looked like, ”a little boy receiving Jesus with his heart.” Unimaginable mercy.

This story is of course not about what Hoss did at Auschwitz. Horribly wrong on every count. It is however about the mercy that God shows to us. No matter how far we may feel we have distanced ourselves from Him…God is always there waiting for us to return. The Jubilee Year of Mercy…….Lets not waste the opportu-nity.

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen.

DEACON LACHLAN
