A group of newly minted Catholic chaplains pose for a photo in 1918 at Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville, Ky. The chaplains helped meet the spiritual needs of U.S. military service members during World War I. April 6 this year marked the 100th anniversary of the entrance of the United States into what became known as the ‘Great War’.

While the Church has always provided for the spiritual needs of our servicemen and women, the Archdiocese for the Military Services was created by Pope John Paul II to provide the Catholic Church’s full range of pastoral ministries and spiritual services to those in the United States Armed Forces. This includes more than

220 installations in 29 countries, patients in 153 V.A. Medical Centers, and federal employees serving outside the boundaries of the USA in 134 countries. Numerically, the AMS is responsible for more than 1.8 million men, women, and children.

One of the Auxiliary Bishops in the Military Archdiocese is one of our own priests from the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Bishop Robert Coyle. He is a graduate of St. Edward’s School in Syosset, and St. Mary’s High School, Manhasset. He was ordained a priest in 1991 by Bishop McGann at St. Agnes Cathedral. He was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy on June 3, 1988 and served almost 25 years on Active and Reserve Duty before his retirement from the Naval Reserve in 2013. As a Navy Reserve Chaplain, he served as Associate Pastor at St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay, and later at St. Patrick’s Glen Cove.

Bishop Coyle served on Active Duty from 1999 to 2009. In 2005, he was promoted to the rank of Commander, U.S. Navy. From 2007 to 2009, he served on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Aircraft Carrier and deployed to the Middle East for Operation Enduring Freedom. In August of 2009, he returned to Reserve status and began ministry as Pastor of Corpus Christi Parish in Mineola. Bishop Coyle is a 4th Degree Knight of It is only through the selflessness of our priests, and the continued financial support and the prayers from our parish and other parishes on Long Island, that we are able

to provide this spiritual support to our men and women in our armed forces. They deserve nothing less.

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen!

DEACON LACHLAN

We know many people are away over the summer and can’t attend Mass at Holy Spirit. In the spirit of keeping our spiritual lives alive and well throughout the summer months and continuing to encourage our children’s participation in particular, we are inviting all the children to pick up a Mass bulletin from any other parishes wherever they attend church - across the country and even around the world - and leave them at the office. Sally Zehnter will be collecting them throughout the summer and putting together a display of our children’s participation in Mass Across The Country and Mass Across the World.

Contact her at [email protected].

Please leave any Mass bulletins at the office for the attention of Sally Zehnter.

Happy Trails!!

July 17th 2017To all Lectors, Ushers and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, I hope that each of you are enjoying a restful summer with family and friends. This is the time of year when we have an opportunity to take things a little easier, and perhaps take a break from many of our daily routines. We are all so very busy throughout the year, and it is nice to be able to step back and enjoy some rest and recreation.

Looking ahead, I would like to have a meeting with all Lectors, Ushers and E.M’s. These gatherings give each of us a chance to meet and discuss the various aspects of our ministry. I have scheduled a meeting for Saturday September 23rd in the church. I am giving plenty of notice to everyone, because it is important that we have full attendance at the meeting. Other than a very serious reason, my hope is that everyone attend.

To make the meetings productive, we will have a separate meeting for each group. If you are involved in more than one ministry please attend the meeting which is specific to each of your ministries. When each meeting is finished, lunch will be available in Martin Hall. The meeting schedule is posted below.

Thank you for all you do for Holy Spirit, and I look forward to meeting with each group in September.

Respectfully

Fr. Grieco
