Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time / C 13th October 2019
I remember a priest once preaching about a sign outside the front of a Church that he used to regularly drive past. The sign was attempting to paraphrase Jesus message “‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” And the sign read “God is other people”. This has a truth in the sense that God is present in other people and the way we treat them is important. It also could be misinterpreted to say that we should be worshiping other people in a pantheistic fashion (Pantheism being the belief that everything is ultimately God). The Priest worrying about this misinterpretation said he had the desire to change the grammar of the sign so it read “God is Other; people!”. His point was that he wanted to stress the transcendence of God. To have us remember that God is not the same as us and that we cannot claim to be able to read the mind of God. Like all theological language this more transcendent approach is also not without risks. When we stress how different God is the risk is that God can be seen as so foreign to us that we have no way of relating to God. Our concept of God becomes an image of a distant figure who is so superior to us that we should not dare to approach. In its extreme we can have a type of Deism, a belief that God is like a divine watchmaker. God creates the world, lets everything continue as it should, but its actions are unimportant to God. This attitude is expressed when people discourage prayer by saying “I am sure God has more important things to worry about than your trivial concerns”. Is there any hope for us? How can we hope to know God. The textbook answer for Catholics that God has revealed himself to us through means of scripture and tradition. This is true and it is a necessary but not sufficient condition for us to know God. At a simpler level we should see that we do have a means to know God, in the second person of the Trinity. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Jesus came and became one of us to create the bridge that crosses the divide between ourselves and the transcendence of God. St. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a human being, Christ Jesus." In order for us to know God we have the person of Jesus Christ. When we speak to Jesus we are speaking to God. God is not a distant being, remote from us, God is Jesus and we learn what God is asking of us through reading and learning about the life of Jesus Christ. In Matthew 11:27 we read "Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." We only know the Father exists thanks to the Son, we only know the Holy Spirit exists thanks to the Son. It can feel hard to walk this tightrope between seeing God as too immanent and seeing God as too transcendent but we have help in this task, God has given us the means to cross the divide in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus is true God and True Man and so it is a sure way for us to know that we are in friendship with God when we are friends of Jesus Christ. Fr Andrew James

Catholic Mission
DO NOT FEAR for I am with you Next weekend our parish will be holding the annual Catholic Mission Church Appeal. This year we are invited to partner with the Church in Ghana, as they provide ongoing protection and development of children who are vulnerable. In line with traditional beliefs, in parts of Ghana, children born with a disability, or whose mother passes during childbirth, are considered to be “spirit children’ and thus at risk of being harmed or killed. The Church in Ghana is dedicated to protecting these children and educating families to ensure every child has a chance to live a full life. Please come prepared to give generously.
