FAITH FORMATION
FEAST OF THE QUEENSHIP OF MARY Tuesday, August 22
Pope Pius XII established this Feast in 1954 but Mary’s Queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of my Lord.” As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, she is closely associated with Jesus: Her Queenship is a share in Jesus’ Kingship.
This feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption, and is now celebrated on the octave day of that Feast. In his 1954 encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII wrote: "The purpose of the Feast is that all may recognize more clearly and venerate more devoutly the merciful and motherly sovereignty of her who bore God in her womb" (Ven. Pius XII, Ad. Coeli Reginam).
Let us pray every day to our Blessed Lady, our Queen and Mother!
O Mary Immaculate Queen, look down upon this distressed and suffering world. You know our misery
and our weakness. You, who are our Mother, saving us in the hour of peril, have compassion on
us in these days of great and heavy trial.
We recognize thy Queenship and ardently desire thy triumph. We need a Mother and a Mother's Heart. You are for us the luminous dawn which
dissipates our darkness and points out the way to life. In thy clemency obtain for us the courage and
the confidence of which we have such need.
Most Holy and Adorable Trinity, You, who did crown
with glory in Heaven the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of the Savior, grant that all her children
on earth may acknowledge her as their Sovereign Queen, that all hearts,
homes, and nations may recognize her rights as Mother and as Queen.
Amen.
FEAST OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW, APOSTLE Patron of Nervous Diseases, Butchers,
Plasterers, Shoemakers
Thursday, August 24
St. Bartholomew from Cana in Galilee is one of the Twelve Apostles, mentioned sixth in the three Gospel lists (Mt 10:3; Mk 3:18; Lk 6:14), and seventh in the list of Acts (1:13). Besides being listed as an Apostle, he is not otherwise mentioned in the New Testament, at least not under the name Bartholomew. Many ancient writers, and Catholic tradition have identified Bartholomew as Nathaniel in the Gospel of John (Jn 1:45-51 and 21:2).
Probably a close friend of St. Philip, Bartholomew’s (Nathanael) name is always mentioned in the Gospels in connection with Philip, and it was Philip who brought him to Jesus. He was one of the first disciples called by the Lord: “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.”
After the Resurrection, he was favored by becoming one of the few apostles who witnessed the appearance of the risen Savior on the sea of Galilee (John 21:2). Following the Ascension, he is said to have preached in Greater Armenia and died a martyr’s death there by the elder brother of King Astyages of Babylon, who had him flayed alive (the removal of the skin) and subsequently beheaded.
His relics were moved from Armenia to the Isle of Lipari (near Sicily) in the 6th century. They were moved again in 838 to Basilica of San Bartolomeo in Benevento, northeast of Naples. A small part of his relics was given in 983 by Holy Roman Emperor Otto II to Rome where they are conserved at the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all'Isola, and later, St. Bartholomew's skull was given to the Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew in Frankfurt, and an arm to Canterbury Cathedral in England.
Almighty and everlasting God, who gave to your apostle Bartholomew grace truly
to believe and to preach your Word: Grant that your Church may love what he believed and preach what he taught; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Statement of Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin,
C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, on the events of this past
weekend in Charlottesville, Va. The one and a half million Catholic men, women and children of the Archdiocese of Newark – people who trace their roots to every continent of the world and represent every race and ethnicity – view with horror the recent events in Charlottesville and condemn the racism and vicious rhetoric that contributed to this tragic moment in our nation’s history. We stand in prayer and solidarity with all people of good will and we witness to our Christian calling to “love your enemies…that you may be children of your heavenly Father.” (Mt. 5:44-45)
In the wake of her daughter’s brutal death, the mother of Heather Heyer told reporters in Charlottesville that “hate cannot fix the world. Hate only creates more hate.” We join her in rejecting the brutality that killed her child, contributed to the deaths of two Virginia State Troopers and left dozens injured. While we denounce such violence, we also call for a thorough examination of racial bigotry and intolerance in the light of reason and love. “For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed” (Jn 3:20). Dark words and deeds must be met with light and love. STAFF CONTACT INFORMATION Rectory: 201-529-3517 Pastor: Rev. ""O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." In today’s Gospel of Matthew, the Canaanite woman refuses to be rebuffed even by the harsh
words of Jesus. Nothing stopped her from seeking healing for her daughter “tormented by a demon.” Her great faith moves Jesus to grant her request. Faith, by nature, is persistent. Persistence, by nature, is single-minded. Single-mindedness, by nature, achieves the end it seeks. Like the woman in the Gospel seeking healing for her daughter, our faith must be great enough to overcome barriers, must focus persistently on Jesus, and must bear the fruit of salvation and healing for others. All of us struggle with persistence - in prayer, in good works, with any spiritual discipline. The Gospel woman reminds us that sometimes the sheer persistence can be the prayer, the good work and the spiritual discipline!
This Monday, August 21st, a total solar eclipse will engulf much of the U.S. (previous one here was 99 years ago) but unfortunately for us in the Northeast, we won’t experience the full sun-blocking effects of the phenomenon. Instead, we’ll get a partial eclipse, with the moon covering about 70 percent of the sun beginning at 1:23 pm, ending around 4 pm with the peak time at 2:44 pm. Observing the beauty and power of the natural world should always lead our thoughts back to its Creator and our relationship with Him. Let us pray that this total solar eclipse in which so many of us will be looking up to heaven at roughly the same time will open our hardened hearts and bring Jesus’ peace, harmony and love to all people throughout our land. And let us also pray, that through the intercession of Mary Immaculate in whom we now celebrate the 100th Anniversary of her apparitions in Fatima in 1917, when another great astronomical event, the “Miracle of the Sun,” occurred!
God Bless You all. Have a wonderful and safe week! Fr. Jacek
