The Symbols of Pentecost
Wind Representing God’s first breath of love (Ruah) into all of creation. A “driving wind” surrounded the apostles on that first Pentecost to strengthen them in their faith. The breath of the Holy Spirit – and sometimes a gusting wind – strengthens and challenges God’s people on their faith journey.
Fire Representing the Holy Spirit, who filled the apostles with enthusi-asm, replacing their fear with the courage to go forth and share Christ’s story. “Tongues of fire … came to rest on each one of them.”
Red The color of liturgical vestments on Pentecost, representing the dynamism of the Holy Spirit and the zeal of those who open their hearts to the Spirit.
Water Representing new life and the commitment first made at the time of our baptism and renewed throughout our faith lives.
Dove Representing the Holy Spirit that descended “like a dove” and hov-ered over Jesus when he was baptized. Symbol of peace. -www.archmil.org
May 24 - The Blessed Virgin Mary
Mother of the Church and
Our Lady Help of Christians
Mary’s Motherhood of the Church, her spiritual offspring, is re-vealed at the foot of the cross. There, where her divine Son, the Church’s head, suffers death, she takes John– and with him all of us—as her children: “Woman, behold your son.” She again obeys the Word to whom she gave herself completely at the Annunciation. In clinging to her like little children, we are all more conformed to Jesus and thus made worthy to inherit his Kingdom. -Magnificat
Prayer To Our Lady, Help Of Christians
Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christians, how sweet it is to come to your feet imploring your perpetual help. If earthly mothers cease not to remember their children, how can you, the most loving of all mothers forget me? Grant then to me, I implore you, your perpetual help in all my necessities, in every sorrow, and especially in all my temptations. I ask for your unceasing help for all who are now suffering. Help the weak, cure the sick, convert sinners. Grant through your intercessions many vocations to the religious life. Obtain for us, O Mary, Help of Christians, that having invoked you on earth we may love and eternally thank you in heaven. -St. John Bosco

Go to Joseph Joseph loved Jesus as a father loves his son and showed his love by giving him the best he had. Joseph, caring for the child as he had been commanded, made Jesus a craftsman, transmitting his own professional skill to him. So the neighbors of Nazareth will call Jesus both faber and fabri filius: the craftsman and the son of the craftsman. Jesus worked in Joseph’s workshop and by Jo-seph’s side. What must Joseph have been, how grace must have worked through him, that he should be able to fulfill this task of the human upbringing of the Son of God! Jesus must have resembled Joseph: in his way of working, in the features of his character, in his way of speaking. Jesus’ realism, his eye for detail, the way he sat at table and broke bread, his preference for using everyday situations to give doctrine—all this reflects his childhood and the influence of Joseph. It’s not possible to ignore this sublime mys-tery: Joseph who is man, who speaks with the accent of a particu-lar district of Israel, who resembles a carpenter called Joseph, is the Son of God. . . In human life, Joseph was Jesus’ master in their daily contact, full of refined affection, glad to deny himself to take better care of Je-sus. Isn’t that reason enough for us to consider this just man, this holy patriarch, in whom the faith of the old covenant bears fruit, as a master of interior life? Interior life is nothing but continual and direct conversation with Christ, so as to become one with him. And Joseph can tell us many things about Jesus. Therefore, nev-er neglect devotion to him—Ite ad Joseph: Go to Joseph, as Chris-tian tradition puts it in the words of the Old Testament (Gn 41: 55). A master of interior life, a worker deeply involved in his job, God’s servant in continual contact with Jesus: that is Joseph. Ite ad Jo-seph. With Saint Joseph, the Christian involved in his job learns what it means to belong to God and fully to assume one’s place among men, sanctifying the world. Get to know Joseph and you will find Jesus. Talk to Joseph and you will find Mary, who always sheds peace about her in that attractive workshop in Nazareth. -Saint Josemaria Escriva
