From Father Jim’s Desk … Farewell to Our Beloved Joan

Though we have all dreaded this day, we knew it was coming. On May 31st, our dear Joan is retiring af-ter many wonderful years of service to our Church. I have only been Pastor for ten months, but I feel very blessed to have worked with Joan each day, learning from her vast wisdom and seeing her love for the Church firsthand. Though we might say goodbye to Joan in her capacity as Church Secretary, we joyously celebrate the fact that she will be a retired active member of our Parish family, and I know we will see her often! For the past 17 years, she has shared her joy, knowledge, and general love of life with all of us, so now we wish her many blessings and happy times in her retirement! May God Bless her and her family abun-dantly! We wish we could have a formal reception for Joan, but unfortunately the current situation won’t allow that. However, please feel free to send Joan a note of a favorite memory you have with her or warm wishes. Personally, one of my favorite memories of Joan occurred when I first arrived here and was pre-paring for our first full staff meeting. I was not quite sure of the routine, but I knew that we shared a meal together before our meetings and was trying to think of what food to bring. Then, it was brought to my attention that Joan was making all the food for us to share. I breathed a sigh of relief and knew how blessed I was that she was there! She had already taken care of the details before the rest of us could worry about it, as she so often does. That is just one memory of many, and I know all of us have a lot of them! Joan’s last official day in the office is Friday, May 29, so please feel free to stop in and see her or send a note. Of course, we will forward any mail to her after her retirement. Most importantly, remember to keep her in your prayers for a blessed retirement, as I know we will all be in her prayers! Fr. Jim’s Reflection of the Week The seventh Sunday of Easter marks a time of transition in the liturgical year and in each year of faith we share as a Church. Our Lord Ascends into Heaven and in one week, at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit is sent forth to empower the disciples with God’s love to go forth and preach to all nations. The power of the Holy Spirit is beyond measure. We, like the disciples, can find ourselves nervous in times of transition or uncertainty. Yet our faith teaches us that trusting in God will always lead to success. We do not know how Christ will lead us to fulfillment in our lives; we simply know that if we turn our lives over into his care, he will do the rest. In our journey of faith, we often look around and think, “how will any of this ever work out?” However, if we place our trust in the Lord in prayer and carry on, it does work out in God’s plan. Like the disciples, we must trust in the Lord, perhaps now more than ever before in our lives. Dur-ing these times of uncertainty, remember that the Holy Spirit will do incredible things in our Lives! As of Friday May 15, 2020, we have been able to open our Churches again for Private Prayer in accord with all proper cleaning procedures that we will follow. The following will be our initial schedule for Pri-vate Prayer. We will be sanitizing before and after Churches are open but please also practice proper six feet social distancing and the use of face masks. Please be safe and we will do all that we can to maintain a safe prayerful environment! Monday Glen Campbell 9 - 10AM - open for private prayer Tuesday Ernest 9 -10AM - open for private prayer Wednesday Heilwood 9 -10AM - open for private prayer Thursday Clymer 9 -10AM - open for private prayer Friday Rossiter 9 -10AM - open for private prayer Sunday All Sites 10:00AM - 12:00PM - open for private prayer

Guidelines for Recommencing In-Person Worship

Masses permitted to begin on June 1 To parishioners in the Diocese of Greensburg:

For the foreseeable future, all people will remain dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays. Those who feel vulnerable because of their age or health are encouraged to stay home, while those who are sick should not attend public worship. Streaming Masses will continue.

Here are some additional guidelines: In accordance with CDC guidelines, all high-touch areas must be sanitized. People must wear a mask and must be seated at least in every other pew to en-sure adherence to social distancing guidelines of six feet, which equates to approximately 25% ca-pacity inside the church. Members of the same household, however, may sit together.

Ministers functioning within the liturgy are not required to wear masks in the Sanctuary, as long as the six foot social distancing guidelines are followed. However, when distributing Holy Communion, all ministers must wear a mask.

All communicants will be encouraged to receive the Sacred Host in the hand. A bottle of hand sani-tizer should be placed on a table beside the minister of Holy Communion who must make use of it when any contact is made giving Holy Communion, or when requested by the one receiving Holy Communion. The chalice of the Precious Blood will not be offered to the congregation.

The Sign of Peace at this time will not include a handshake, instead we will turn to the person next to us and offer a reverential bow. Holy water and baptismal fonts must be drained. Collection bas-kets may never be passed among the congregation and instead must be placed in a stationary and suitable location. Removal of Bibles, hymnals and missalettes is required, however non-reusable worship aids are allowed and projection is encouraged. Musicians are advised to limit music and singing, and no choirs are permitted.

Parishes may modify their Mass schedule to accommodate proper sanitization requirements.

It has been another great week for our DLA 2020! This is cause for great cele-bration and tremendous thanks to all who have contributed so far this year!!With a couple of huge weeks behind us, we continue to grow towards our Parish Goal! GOSPEL MEDITATION - Seventh Sunday of Easter

What does faith and religion do for us? Ultimately, they remind us of some truths we conveniently for-get: we are created by a loving God, we have imper-fections, we sin, we need to be forgiven, we have a mission and a purpose, it’s not just about us, and we hunger for the joy of salvation. These are human truths that are not dependent upon whether we like them. Ignoring them places us on the paths of com-fort and satisfaction as we blindly pursue the busy-ness and superficiality of our empty lives. Instead of pursuing supernatural and lasting pleasure, we choose things that are easier and quicker to obtain: sex, drugs, travel, houses, cars, fame, popularity, self-achievement and satisfaction, physical enjoy-ment, and the like.

We may also find ourselves falling victim to more negative responses to what life brings us: anger, en-vy, lust, pride, gluttony, greed, and apathy. Human hearts can become so hardened to the truth that vio-lence becomes the response of first choice. Being a Christian is hard! Yet, as Pope Francis reminds us, the Church needs to be a field hospital that has to be prepared to provide people with the remedy they need. What we need is Jesus Christ. The Church, with all of the glory of the sacraments, exists to help make Christ present and real for us. Once we find Christ, we find joy. Joy is a matter of the heart that is beyond pleasure and happiness. It is not found in some earthly satisfaction, only in Christ.

Once we accept that we are destined to be in Christ, then we will discover eternal life. Namely, “that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” It is easy to conven-iently forget truth and pursue illusions immediately within our grasp, but at what price? A man celebrat-ing 60 years of marriage remarked that it took so much effort and so many attempts to convince his wife that they were meant to be together. Even his friends told him he was foolish. He easily could have given up and pursued other interests. He chose to persevere and is so grateful that he made that choice because he now has a pearl of great price. Do we see a value in persevering in our faith regard-less of the cost? If we don’t take the risk, we could lose more than we know.
