The Pastor’s Corner

Called to Be God’s Servants

“You are my servant.” These are the first words we hear in the Liturgy of Word on this Sunday in Ordinary Time. These words of the prophet Isaiah originally referred to the people Israel as God’s dear people. The words also apply to Jesus as God’s chosen servant for our salvation. They also connect with us individually and collectively as God’s servants. The prophet goes on: “Now the Lord has spoken who formed me as his servant from the womb.” This can refer to our experience in our mothers’ wombs before we were born. The term “womb” can also refer to the waters of baptism through which we become members of the Body of Christ, the Church.

As God’s servants we are to bring the light and truth of Christ into our society by our example of Christ-like living, advocating for the least of our sisters and brothers, and challenging our elected officials to base their decision making on values and principles that originate with God’s plan for the good of humanity.

When do you especially realize that you are God’s servant? How is the Church being called to be the servant of God today? Fr. Tom Krenik

The Holy Spirit at Work in the Bible and in Us Tuesdays, beginning March 3, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Bays

On five Tuesday evenings in Lent, beginning March 3, our pastor, Fr. Tom Krenik, will offer a Bible study series on the role of Holy Spirit in the Bible and in our Christian living. Reference to the Spirit appears on the first page of the Bible, on the last page of the Bible, and in many places in between. Emphasis will be given to the growth of the Biblical tradition concerning the presence and action of the Holy Spirit. We will also explore how we experience the Holy Spirit at work in the Liturgy, discernment, conscience, personal prayer, and inspiration to do good works. Each session begins at 6:30 pm and concludes by 8:30 pm. The cost of the series is $20, which includes a copy of the St. Joseph’s Bible NABRE and other materials. To register for this series, go to risensavior.org Adult Faith Formation page or contact Grace Koleczek.

Greece Pilgrimage: Exciting Price Reduction! 2020 is here, which also means the Greece Pilgrimage is fast approaching. From October 4 through 14, Fr. Tom will be leading a pilgrimage through Greece: Follow in the Footsteps of Paul. The cost of the airfare has significantly dropped by $500/person or $1000/couple! Go to risensavior.org, pick up a pamphlet from the display in the Commons, or contact Grace Koleczek if you are interested and for more details.

Abundant Gratitude from Risen Savior Angel Tree Volunteers

Sending a sincere THANK YOU! to all parishioners who so kindly contributed to the Angel Tree program for this Christmas season. Your generosity was most appreciated by the children. Angel Tree is a program of prisonfellowship.org which reaches out to the children of prisoners and their families with the love of Christ. Every Angel Tree parent’s family receives a gift for each child, a personal message of love from their incarcerated parent, and a free copy of the Bible (either in English or Spanish). The gifts and the Word of God are delivered personally to the families by parish volunteers. As two of these parish volunteers, it has been our privilege to be associated with this program. Children of incarcerated parents may often experience the loneliness and shame of having a par-ent in prison. Angel Tree brings a connection between parent and child in hope and in Christ’s love. Thank you!

Make Your Voice Heard!

What’s working and what’s not in the Archdiocese? Archbishop Hebda wants to hear from you! Consider attending an upcoming Prayer and Listening Event, as part of the Pre-Synod Process and make your feedback known. Your input will help guide the Archdiocese over the next 5 – 10 years.

Next three events:

Saturday, January 25, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., St. Peter Claver, St. Paul

Tuesday, January 28, 6:00-9:00 p.m., Pax Christi, Eden Prairie

Saturday, February 1, 9:00 a.m.12:00 p.m., St. Stephen, Minneapolis (bi-lingual, English & Spanish).

Learn more about the Synod and see a full listing of Prayer and Listening Events at archspm.org/synod.

Upcoming Parish-wide Survey: February 2020

At Archbishop Hebda’s request, all parishes will offer the Catholic Leadership Institute’s Disciple Maker Index (DMI) in February. This is a survey consisting of 70 questions which will take about 10-15 minutes to complete, either online or in paper form. The survey asks parishioners to reflect on their own spiritual growth and identify the ways in which the parish effectively supports that growth. All responses are confidential and the parish will only receive information about the community as a whole. The data will also help direct the Archdiocesan Synod discernment process. Risen Savior will have paper copies available after Masses February 8-9, 2020; the link to take the survey online will be made available in February as well.
