THIS IS THE HOLY TRINITY Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, one of the most con-founding mysteries of our faith. Through this mystery we experience our relationship to God: Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit. This relationship is not easy to understand or to describe. It does not become clearer through analysis. Its complexity mirrors the complexity of all our relationships. We understand our relationships with our spouses, our chil-dren, our parents, and our friends only through daily give-and-take, annual rituals, and the life-changing moments we share. We understand our relationships only as we live them. The relationships we have with those we love, and who love us, sustain us through an uncertain and difficult life. This is the Holy Trinity. What is striking about today’s readings is that each is incom-plete. What they do offer is a description of a moment in our relationship, a memory of a time and an event when our rela-tionship made sense even though that sense may be beyond our ability to describe fully. Often that is all that our faith offers, that is, a memory of what is possible, what is prom-ised, what has been given. A memory of eternity, of love beyond understanding is to be cherished and nurtured even if not fully understood. This is the Holy Trinity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of worship centers on the mystery of God in three persons. At bap-tism, we are initiated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we recite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of baptism, when a new believer was ques-tioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit? Three questions, three affirmations, three immersions into the saving waters. Because every liturgy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the liturgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity, showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abraham’s hospi-tality to angels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abun-dance whenever Christians gather at the table of the Eu-charist to give praise to the Father, in Christ, in the em-brace of the Spirit. —James Field, Copyright © J. LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

Nothing in this world is indifferent to us.

#4. In 1971, eight years after Pacem in Terris, Blessed Pope Paul VI referred to the ecological concern as “a tragic consequence” of unchecked human activity: “Due to an ill-considered exploitation of nature, humanity runs the risk of destroying it and becoming in turn a victim of this degradation”. He spoke in similar terms to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations about the potential for an “ecological catastrophe under the effective explosion of industrial civiliza-tion”, and stressed “the urgent need for a radical change in the conduct of humanity”, in as much as “the most extraordinary scientific advances, the most amazing technical abilities, the most astonishing eco-nomic growth, unless they are accompanied by au-thentic social and moral progress, will definitively turn against man”.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks: When our Popes publish an important teaching or development to all the peo-ple, it may be the first time many of us become aware of the teaching or the problem. The Pope has to reassure us all that he is not pulling a rabbit out of a hat. You see many of us are very traditional, espe-cially, when it comes to our religion. Some of us also think that we learned it all from good Sister or the educated Jesuits, so there's no need for new ideas. This is why our Popes nearly always begin by refer-ring to previous Popes' letters. And today and the next few weeks we will have Pope Francis reference the words of popes and their letters that we have for-gotten or never knew. Pope Francis is informing us if we are willing to pay attention; ''This problem also worried your favorite Pope of blessed memory, so perhaps now you will begin to pay attention to what I'm saying.'' And this week he begins by quoting Blessed Pope Paul VI: ''The most extraordinary sci-entific advances, the most amazing technical abili-ties, the most astonishing economic growth, unless they are accompanied by authentic and moral pro-gress, will definitively turn against man.'' That was in 1971. We should listen to our Pope.
