St. Vincent de Paul Meeting this Sunday, February 16, 2020, 10:00 a.m.

in the Rectory Conference Room. All are welcome.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many of our customs surrounding critical illness come from antiquity, and yet attitudes have certainly changed. Death was an all-too-familiar presence then, and people tended to see it as a natural and unavoidable part of life, not a personal catastrophe. People tried to review their lives, settle their affairs, say farewell to their dear ones, and welcome the deathbed vigils and prayers that assured them of God’s love and forgiveness. What people most feared was sudden death. It was dreaded and never dis-cussed. The faithful filled the catacombs with consoling images of the good shepherd carrying the sheep to safe pasture, or the faithful in glory seated at banquet tables. The pray-er texts from the time are consoling and positive, and many inspired our modern prayers. The care of the dying flowed directly from Roman pagan practice; it was home-based and family-centered. Pagans didn’t especial-ly fear death, but they were terrified by the dead. Chris-tians, on the other hand, consoled their sick with psalms of joy and faith in the Resurrection. The goal was to as-sure the sick person of God’s love, and that the ties that bind the dead and the living would endure. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY

#40 Oceans not only contain the bulk of our planet’s water supply, but also most of the immense variety of living creatures, many of them still unknown to us and threatened for various reasons. What is more, marine life in rivers, lakes, seas and oceans, which feeds a great part of the world’s popu-lation, is affected by uncontrolled fishing, leading to a drastic depletion of certain species. Selective forms of fishing which discard much of what they collect continue unabated. Particularly threatened are marine organisms which we tend to overlook, like some forms of plankton; they represent a significant ele-ment in the ocean food chain, and species used for our food ultimately depend on them. Fr. Terry’s Remarks: The Oceans cover most of our Planet Earth and they are rising and expanding much to the dismay of the Earth's human populations who mostly live near the waters' edges. But of even more need of our atten-tion is that not only do the oceans give us so much pleasure and joy but they provide a great part of the food on our plates and it is both delicious and health giving Like our forests and landforms the life of the teeming oceans are even more varied and inter related with us than our land connections. Yet we are seemingly as uncaring for them than we are to the air and the creatures that surround us. Daily we advance in scientific discovery and we expand the frontiers of space and self knowledge But even the lemmings would be aghast at our rush to the brink.
