Happy Birthday to all our children celebrating in March

Staff News We have two pieces of good news to share with

you this month. Mrs Harrison is expecting a baby

in the Autumn. Both she and Mr Harrison are very

excited and young Joey will make a great big

brother, we’re sure!

Mrs Docherty has passed her qualification for

headship (NPQH) with flying colours. It’s no

longer a requirement for headship, but it is a

great platform to launch her headship at Church

Road School. Well done Mrs Docherty!

Long weekend holiday opportunity!

We have tried to give families a chance to have a long

weekend break in the spring, perhaps at a cheaper rate

whilst everyone else is at work. We have to close the school

for polling on Thursday 3rd May and we have

put another training day on 4th May. The

bank holiday will be on 7th May. This might

give families the chance to get away for a

long weekend without any school absences

to worry about!

Allotment There have been a few visits to the

allotment recently. The children are

chitting their potatoes on the classroom

windowsills and digging over their plots

to get rid of the winter weeds.

We are also planning to plant up the incredible

edible troughs in the KS1 playground in the next

few weeks. This means that the children will be

able to see the first shoots appearing in April and

may be able to eat the vegetables

after half term in the summer—how

lovely!

The strawberries and raspberries are

beginning to throw up new shoots too.

Summer Term At the start of each term we usually

open on a Tuesday...but not this time!

We have rearranged our training days

this year to make the long weekend

(see below) so we will open on Monday

16th April, bright and sparkly as always!

Attendance Our attendance is picking up a little, which is great news. We haven’t hit the dizzy heights of 96% yet, but we are

getting there. Last month our attendance was

95.7% So far this year our attendance is

95% Which is the same as last month, but I promise the figures are improving. We will be handing out attendance

badges at the start of next term. I think we might need to order a few more!

CHURCH road art on tour!

We have had a lot of lovely art work done

in school over the past few weeks. Here

are the children in Reception

preparing their

work for our Art

Exhibition in the

town centre on

21st March. Our

Governor who

champions the

arts, Peter Cunliffe,

has offered once

again to host an

Art Exhibition at his

offices on Silverwell Street and at the Parish

Church in the town centre.

The children are all creating a piece of art

work to be displayed. Fieldings Porter will

be awarding prizes for the artwork, and the

prize winners will be displayed in their newly

decorated offices.

As well as the art work there will be an

opportunity for children to showcase their

music skills and the choir will be performing.

It should be a great opportunity to

showcase our wonderful children’s talents.

BINGO! Our ever popular Easter Bingo will be held on Wednesday 28th

March. The doors will open at 6pm and we will be “eyes down” at 6:30pm.

You can buy your tickets from the office for £1.50, which is your ticket for the first game “stand up bingo”, so don’t forget to

bring it along on the night! On the night you will need to buy bingo cards for £1 for

a book of 6 games. There will be refreshments and a raffle. Make sure you get your

tickets quickly as they sell like hot cakes (or maybe hot cross buns!)

If you are able to donate any cakes for the café they would be very gratefully received. Please send them into school on the

morning of 28th March. Don’t forget our non uniform day on 23rd March—just 50p to put towards

buying some fabulous Easter Eggs.

Sport at Church road! Miss Shacklady and her team have been busy over the past few months getting our children involved in sports

competitions. The children have been to a variety of venues and have taken part in netball, rounders, athletics

and dance.

The teams have been a real credit to the school and their families. Thank you for representing us so

enthusiastically!

A message from Mrs Fenton Well, after ten years and a term of headship at Church Road School, this is my final newsletter.

I also used to write a newsletter at my previous school, so a total of 223 newsletters. I think that

deserves a medal (but retirement will do!)

I came to Church Road School in January 2008. I was ready for a new challenge and that is

exactly what I got. It has been a challenge, but I have had the most rewarding time. From the

children who were in Y6 in 2008, most of whom are celebrating their 21st birthdays this year, to

the children currently in our nursery. They have all been a joy to work with. I’m not saying

there haven’t been a few challenging children over the years, but even the most challenging

have their good points!

I have loved the children’s enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. They are stars! The staff in

school are wonderful. They often go the extra mile to make sure that the children not only

achieve well, but also have lots on fun and exciting experiences whilst

doing so. I am leaving the school in good hands.

Thank you for all the good wishes I have received for my retirement. I

am excited about caravan holidays, knitting and sewing, walking but

most of all spending time with my family, especially Jack, who is now 7

months old and, I’m sure, looking forward to more Granny time!

My very best wishes to you all!

Catherine Fenton

The children are gearing up to join in the Sports Relief challenge next week. The sport team

have put their heads together and have decided to set a challenge to walk for miles! We

hope to work together to clock up 1500 miles between us during next week. There are 430

children as well as all the staff in school, so we’re sure we can do that! The challenge will

take place throughout the week, but our main day will be Thursday 22nd March when the

children may come to school in their sporty clothes. On this day we hope to clock up the

majority of miles. We will keep a score in school and let you know at the end of next week

how many miles we have achieved.

On Thursday, when the children are wearing their own clothes, please send a donation for

us to pass on to Sports Relief. We usually ask for a £1 donation, but please feel free to donate more if you wish!

100% badges We will be discontinuing the 100% attendance

badges after the summer term.

They have not been as effective as we had hoped.

The children who had persistent absence continued

to be absent, the lure of a shiny badge

wasn’t enough to encourage them to come to

school every day. The other side of the coin was that

those children who were generally good attenders,

but unfortunately had bouts of illness, were getting

upset at losing their badge. Obviously, they couldn’t

help being ill!

Our attendance is improving, We will now work even

more directly with the parents of children who are

persistently absent from school to try to further

improve our attendance.

Just to emphasise that we will be giving out badges

at the start of the summer term, gold silver and

bronze!

World Book day Thank you to everyone who joined in with

World Book Day. There were some fabulous

costumes and the

children had great fun

throughout the day. Here

are the pictures of our

winners. If you are confused,

Mrs Fenton is dressed as

Police Officer Penny, a book

written by our very own Mrs

Harrison!

Year Four enjoyed a fabulous day in

the Lake District recently. They visited

“The World of Beatrix Potter” had a

ride on a steamer on Lake

Windermere and visited Brockholes.

Here they were on the boat on a

typically overcast Lakeland day!

Congratulations to all these children who had 100% attendance in the month of February
