We are so glad that you’ve decided to spend this time with us today. All of us were newcomers at one time and we understand how being here for the first time can be somewhat daunting. for you and we invite you to participate at whatever level you are comfortable with.

Dwayne, my husband and I recently sat down and talked about our summer plans. Did you know that

there are only ten weeks of summer and then the kids go back to school for their new year? As you grow older you realize how fast ten weeks go!

As a result, we are taking on summer with a different attitude and approach than we have done in the past. Part of that change is that now we are a family of three. We want our daughter, Deepika to have a fantastic summer. We are deter-mined to make it a wonderful summer for our family! As well, we do not want September to come and say “What did we do this summer?”and our answer to be “Nothing much!”How can you and your family have a fantastic summer?Plan ... A fantastic summer is just not going to happen. It takes planning, research and follow through. Don’t just say “we should have so and so over for a BBQ this summer.” Instead call them or email them and invite them. Invest in those special relationships in your lives. Take advantage of the great weather Toronto has and invite people over to your home.

Don’t forget to plan fun day trips or your vacation weeks. Don’t wait until the last moment and take the risk of being disappointed. Be ahead of the game and plan!

“Remember summer is only ten weeks long...”

Karen MilleyYou can view this article online at www.thechurch.to

I would also challenge you to have purpose in your plan-ning. Ask God what He wants you to do and who He wants you to connect with this summer.

For example, my family is having our first family reunion in July. Many of my family members do not know Christ and we want to take advantage of this opportunity to spend time with them. I also had an opportunity to perform a wedding that day. But Dwayne and I decided that our fam-ily reunion is more of a priority and has a divine purpose for us. Do not forget to include God in your summer planning! He wants to be involved! In addition to having your summer all planned, do not for-get to be spontaneous, too. When you find yourself having an evening or afternoon free, why not call up your friends and go for a walk or for ice cream? Or take your child to the park and have a picnic.

Our city has so many great things to do this summer, take advantage of them.

Enjoy... Remember summer is only ten weeks long … don’t waste the time but ENJOY every moment.

DO NOT FORGET THE ‘R’s” THIS SUMMER!Our winter was so difficult and even our spring has been cool. The good news is that summer is coming! I find that many people are so busy that they do not take advantage of summer.

I want to share with you the “R’s” that help me to get the most out of summertime:

When you go away on holidays, remem-ber Jesus. Find a good church to visit on Sunday. Take prayer walks and do your

devotions in nature. Do not forget to pray and help us while you are gone having

fun. The key is to go on vacation, but do not take a vacation from Jesus.

Take time to rest and relax. You don’t have to shovel

snow, therefore enjoy the weather and be rejuvenated.

1. RELAXATION: 2. REMEMBER:

Page 9: churchLIFE summer '14

09

We always want to pack as much as we can into the summer but sometimes it is counter productive. Think hard and get control of your

calendar . Enjoy this summer and grow in Christ.

May the Lord Jesus who made summer, bless you and may He shine His love on you and your family.

The summer is a perfect time to reconnect over a barbeque or picnic with friends and

family you have not seen all winter. The key is “KISS”… Keep It Simple Saint!!! Go for walks with your friends or sit in a park and

talk. Be creative but enjoy the summer.

The grass, trees and flowers always come back after a hard winter. We

need to take steps this summer to be restored. Go on private prayer walks.

Take a couple of hours and just listen to God through nature. The key is to be

led by the Holy Spirit so that you come alive again like nature after the long

and difficult winter.

LIFE

Page 11: churchLIFE summer '14

Well, we made it through one of the hardest winters we’ve had in recent years and now we can finally celebrate the arrival of summer and the nice warm weather. Summer is my favorite time of year and the warmer the bet-ter. It is always tempting to start plan-ning away the entire summer with endless outdoor activities, weekend barbeques, getaways and all kinds of family events with the goal of filling in every possible minute, taking advan-tage of the arrival of summer. How-ever, let me please encourage you to also plan for times of quiet and rest.

We spend so much time from Sep-tember to June rushing around with

work and school as well as our many church activities and we don’t realize just how exhausting it can all be. The Bible tells us to take time to rest and so I encourage you to be intentional about planning for times of rest as you make your summer plans.

Make time for down time. Relaxation is a great way to help ease the stress of our hectic lives and taking time to enjoy God’s awesome creation will do wonders to rejuvenate you and restore your physical energies. The season provides a great chance to take time for yourself and to get alone with God and let Him ease your burdens.

Psalm 37:7 tells us to rest in the Lord and to wait patiently for Him.

The summer is a great time to also give your mind a break. We are so busy all year round and deal with so many things that fill up every moment of our thoughts, and our minds need a chance to relax as well. So, this year as you make all your plans, be inten-tional about scheduling times of rest and relaxation and give God time to talk with you and fill you with His joy.

Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Happy Summer.~ Pastor Roger Berg

Flat waters and the call of a loon across the lake just as the sun sets over the tree tops. This is one of my favourite moments. It’s a moment that I’m privileged to experience every time I go to one of my favourite places, the interior of Algonquin Park. It’s remote, it’s beautiful and it’s quiet.

Most of my days are surrounded by technology. Computers screens, cell phones, GPS and a host of others. Maybe you can relate? Really, I don’t mind it at all. But when it’s time to get away, I really like to get away. So, I head by canoe to the interior lakes of Alqonquin Park, set up camp for a few days, fish (catching nothing), and spend some time with family or friends. Sometimes it rains, sometimes the canoeing is challenging, and other times it’s a little slice of heaven. One thing’s for sure, every time I go it’s the highlight of my summer. Why? Partially because it’s something I thoroughly enjoy, but it’s really be-cause it brings me to a place where I can unplug and breathe in. Time really does seem to go slower. I sit on the side of the lake and take the opporutnity to enjoy every moment. It’s similiar to closing your eyes, taking a deep breath in and slowly exhaling. Go ahead and try it. You’ll see what I mean.

It always reminds me of a time when I was in Haiti doing missions work. It was both rewarding and exhausting. One morning I stepped away from the work project, climbed the hillside and overlooked the small plot of land where we had been staying. Rushed with a mix of physical and spiritual emotions I noticed it was perfectly quiet. Nobody was up. No construction, no kids running around and no noise. There was silence and stillness. It was in that moment that I was reminded of a song lyric that says, “In the stillness You are there.” I looked around, took a deep breath and knew that God was there. I enjoyed that mo-ment right then and there. It didn’t last a long time, probably only a moment. But, by taking time to breathe it in, I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it.

Enjoying the moment. It’s a lesson I’m continuing to learn. I’m learning that I don’t have to be in a remote location to hear God, to experience His peace and be refreshed. But I do have to make time, I do have to slow down and I do have to enjoy the moments that come my way. This summer, take time. Time for you, time for family and time for God. Take time to find a place of stillness, then breathe it in and enjoy the moments that are right in front of you. ~ Donny Cooze

Enjoy the moment
