Introduction

The parish of Stathern possesses three sets of seventeenth century accounts, in varying degrees of completeness and preservation-those of the Constables, of the Churchwardens, and of the Overseers of the Poor. Considerable parts of the Constables' accounts have been transcribed and published in The Archaeological Journal, Vol. LXIX (1922): the Churchwardens' accounts are here printed in full, except for compressions in some of the lists of Church levies. It is ·hoped that the Overseers' accounts may also be transcribed and printed.

The Churchwardens' accounts are contained in two sets of paper sheets, roughly sewn together, together with some odd leaves. The first set or volume is 7'' by 16½'', covering the years 1630 to 1646; the second 8" by 13", covering 1647 to 1677. End pages in both cases are much damaged. Where leaves had clearly been misplaced before their rough binding together, the matter has here been entered according to date.

Where headings or entries took more than one line in the original, the division of lines has not necessarily been followed in the transcription. Capitals have been given where the original showed them clearly, but often it was impossible to determine whether or not a capital should be used, and it is clear that the original writers did not much trouble about the distinction.

All matter included in parentheses is editorial.

... indicates words or letters missing through damage of the leaf. Italics in the text indicate doubtful readings.

Asterisks * indicate references to the glossary and notes, which will be printed at the end of the transcription of the second volume in Part II of Vol. XXIII of Transactions. In the numbered foot-notes the modern spelling is given of words which might cause diffiCulty to some readers.

F. J. WESTERN, Bp.
