You’ll recognize the dynamic work of our alumni, who have artwork in national

museums and whose designs are produced by Fortune 500 companies—

here’s a small sample.

Our graduates have gone on to great success.

Our neighbors, collaborators, and partners are on the creative edge

of culture, technology, and education—and so are we.

At CIA you’ll live in a mix of urban energy surrounded by University Circle, a

park-like setting that houses the region’s most prestigious cultural, academic,

technology, and healthcare organizations. Our campus offers the experience

of a true artists’ community, one that combines the pace and energy of city

living with the creative inspiration of a close-knit campus environment.

Located just five miles from the heart of downtown Cleveland and the shores of Lake Erie, the Cleveland Institute of Art is in the center of the city’s cultural district.

Living in a creative community

Within two square miles are the world-renowned Cleveland Museum of Art, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Cleveland Orchestra, and dozens of museums, galleries, and ethnic neighborhoods.

For your first year at CIA, you’ll live on campus with your fellow freshmen

in Taplin Hall. After your first year, you can move off campus to any of

Cleveland’s nearby neighborhoods. You might find an apartment above the

storefronts of Little Italy, built a hundred years ago by Italian artisans and

the location of some of the best Italian restaurants in the city. Little Italy is

also home to a thriving artistic district with many independent galleries.

Or you might commute by bike from Coventry Village, where eclectic shops

and restaurants draw a diverse crowd. Head downtown where you can tour

the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, walk the shores of Lake Erie, or cheer on the

Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, or Indians at their downtown stadiums.

Student life in a creative community

CIA students benefit from the best of both worlds—small class sizes and a neighborhood teeming with college students.

CIA shares our campus with Case Western Reserve University and the

Cleveland Institute of Music, which gives our students an opportunity to

experience an active college environment of more than 8,000 students.

Many CIA students take part in CWRU extracurricular activities including

intramurals, collegiate sports, and clubs. And if you want to study something

we don’t offer, like physics or Japanese, you can take CWRU courses for

no extra charge with permission from our Registrar.

Your own spaceOnce you enter your major in your sophomore year, you will be given

your own studio space to use through graduation. It’s where you’ll

explore and grow outside the classroom and is located near the

resources you’ll need to complete assignments, develop projects,

and create your final BFA exhibition.

CIA faculty are leaders in their fields and have built impressive local, national,

and international partnerships that translate into extraordinary real-world

experiences for their students. Year-round, CIA faculty are Cleveland

residents, highly engaged in the city’s vibrant artistic community—they also

take part in national and international residencies to enrich their art and

design practice.

With a 9:1 student-to-faculty ratio our faculty engage students on an individual level, taking learning around a table and face-to-face rather than to a lecture hall.

CIA’s Environment structure is the centerpiece of this interdisciplinary

approach to an art and design education. We’ve housed our majors under

four key Environments: Craft + Material Culture; Design; Integrated Media;

and Visual Arts + Technologies. Each major in an Environment maintains its

own curriculum, while the Environment philosophy weaves throughout each

major—offering dynamic opportunities to collaborate with faculty and

students from other majors, share resources, and apply new skills.

Drawing

As a student at the Cleveland Institute of Art we believe that you’ll grow creatively and technically through a depth of experience in your major, combined with a breadth of experience in other majors that complement your studies.

During the first year Foundation program at CIA you’ll develop advanced skills in

drawing, design, and color. In addition, CIA’s Liberal Arts classes are at the core

of our four-year curriculum—giving you opportunities each semester to build

vital communications skills and develop an essential understanding of literature,

history, and social sciences.

Foundation and liberal arts

Our Foundation program ensures your technical skills and creative problem-solving techniques are on par with your peers.

Our academic partnership with our campus neighbor, Case Western Reserve

University (CWRU), offers the collaborative programs and degree-bearing

coursework that will lead to a master’s degree in art education. Once you

earn your BFA from CIA, you can apply to CWRU to become a licensed visual

arts teacher with only one additional year of study. In this extra year you will

have access to the resources of a comprehensive university as you develop

essential leadership and teaching skills. Through this program, many of

CIA’s students have gone on to become committed, knowledgeable, and

creative professionals in art education.

If you’re interested in taking your art and design talents into a classroom of your own as a K–12 art educator, you can do that here at CIA.
