ForewordCIBSE Guide C was comprehensively updated for the 2001 edition. Although basic physicaldata do not change with time, the refinement of measurement and calculation techniquesand further research make regular review essential. Many of the changes to this edition aretherefore small incremental changes, reflecting such refinement.
It was however recognised that section 4, Flow of fluids in pipes and ducts, while heavilyrevised for the 2001 edition, was at that time unable to take account of the latest Europeanresearch. The report of this research has now been obtained and its results distilled intothis edition of Guide C. The opportunity has also been taken to rewrite and clarify the textand to delete many pages of tabular data providing pre-calculated pressure drops throughpipes. It was felt that these tables have outlived their usefulness now that accurate pressuredrops can easily be calculated using spreadsheets or computer programs. Such a spreadsheetis provided on the CD-ROM that accompanies this Guide.
I would like to express my thanks to all the volunteer authors who agreed to review andupdate their work and particularly to Peter Koch for his effort and enthusiasm in revisingsection 4. I would also like to thank all contributors, reviewers and CIBSE staff for theirvaluable contributions.
Finally I hope that you will continue to find this Guide a useful and authoritative source ofreference and guidance.

1.1 Psychrometric data
1.1.1 Basis of calculation
The method of formulation suggested by Goff andGratch(1,2), based on the ideal gas laws with a modificationto take account of intermolecular forces, has been adoptedfor calculating the thermodynamic properties of moist air.This approach remains in line with current practice(3,4).
The thermodynamic properties of dry air and saturatedwater vapour are well established and, although morerecent research work(46) has been done, the results are notsignificantly different from those obtained in earlierwork(7,8). Hence the thermodynamic properties of dry airand water vapour, determined by the National Bureau ofStandards(7) and the National Engineering Laboratory(8),have been retained for the evaluation of the thermo-dynamic properties of moist air.
Since the properties of dry air and saturated water vapourare accurately known, the properties of a mixture of thetwo can be established for the saturated case. For theenthalpy and specific volume of moist air, at a conditionother than saturated, the method is exemplified by thefollowing equations:
h = ha + (hs ha) / 100 (1.1)
v = va + (vs va) / 100 (1.2)
where h is the specific enthalpy of moist air (kJkg1 dryair), ha is the specific enthalpy of dry air (kJkg
1), is thepercentage saturation (%), hs is the specific enthalpy ofsaturated moist air (kJkg1 dry air), v is the specificvolume of moist air (m3kg1 dry air), va is the specificvolume of dry air (m3kg1) and vs is the specific volume ofsaturated moist air (m3kg1 dry air).
The relevant specific property of moist, unsaturated air isdetermined by adding a proportion of the property ofsaturated water vapour to the same property of dry air, ona mass basis.
A consequence of this is that the humidity of moist air isexpressed as percentage saturation (defined in terms of themass of water vapour present), rather than relativehumidity (defined in terms of vapour pressure). Thedetails of the psychrometric calculations are given inreferences 9, 10 and 11.
1.1.2 Standards adopted
All data are tabulated for an internationally agreedstandard atmospheric pressure(12) of 101.325 kPa.
The zero datum adopted by the National EngineeringLaboratory(8) for the expression of the thermodynamicproperties of steam is the triple point of water, +0.01 C.
The zero datum for the specific enthalpies of both dry airand liquid water has been taken here as 273.15 K (0 C).
1.1.3 Formulae used for calculations
Saturated vapour pressure over water(8)
log ps = 30.59051 8.2 log ( + 273.16)
+ 2.4804 103 ( + 273.16)
[3142.31 / ( + 273.16)] (1.3)
where ps is the saturated vapour pressure over water attemperature (kPa), is the temperature, greater than orequal to 0 C (C).

1-2 Reference data
Saturated vapour pressure over ice(7)
log ps = 9.538 099 7 [2 663.91 / ( + 273.15)](1.4)
where ps is the saturated vapour pressure over ice attemperature , less than 0 C (kPa).
Moisture content
0.62197 fs psgs = (1.5)101.325 fs ps
where gs is the moisture content of saturated moist air(kgkg1 dry air) and fs is a dimensionless enhancementfactor(14,11).
Percentage saturation
100 g = (1.6)
gs
where is the percentage saturation (%) and g is themoisture content of unsaturated moist air (kgkg1 dry air).
Vapour pressure of water vapour in unsaturated moist air
pa gpv = (1.7)
fs (0.62197 + g)
where pv is the vapour pressure of superheated watervapour in unsaturated moist air (kPa) and pa is theatmospheric (barometric) pressure (kPa).
Relative humidity
100 pv = (1.8)ps
where is the relative humidity (%).
Wet bulb temperature
Knowing the value of the vapour pressure, pv , fromequation 1.7 the wet bulb temperature is derived from thefollowing equations by an iterative technique:
pv = psl 101.325 A ( sl) (1.9)
where psl is the saturated vapour pressure at temperature sl (kPa), A is a coefficient (K1), is the dry bulbtemperature (C) and sl is the sling or mechanicallyaspirated wet bulb temperature (C).
Values of A are as follows:
A = 6.66 104 K1 when sl 0 C
A = 5.94 104 K1 when sl < 0 C
or:
pv = psc 101.325 B ( sc) (1.10)
where psc is the saturated vapour pressure at temperature sc (kPa), B is a coefficient (K1) and sc is the screen wetbulb temperature (C).
Values of B are as follows:
B = 7.99 104 K1 when sc 0 C
B = 7.20 104 K1 when sc < 0 C
Adiabatic saturation temperature
hfg (gsa g)* = (1.11)(cpa + g cps)
where * is the adiabatic saturation temperature (C), hfgis the latent heat of evaporation of water at temperature *(kJkg1), gsa is the moisture content of saturated air attemperature * (kgkg1 dry air), g is the moisture contentof moist air at the particular psychrometric state (kgkg1dry air), cpa is the mean specific heat capacity of dry airbetween temperatures and * (kJkg1K1) and cps is themean specific heat capacity of water vapour betweentemperatures and * (kJkg1K1).
In the case of the adiabatic saturation temperature aboveice, hfg is replaced by hig , the latent heat of fusion of waterat a temperature *.
Dew-point
For a particular psychrometric state, equation 1.7 is usedto calculate the vapour pressure. An iterative technique isthen used with equation 1.3 or 1.4 to determine thetemperature for which the calculated vapour pressure is asaturated vapour pressure.
Specific volume
82.0567 (273.15 + )v = []28.966 (101.325 pv) / 101.325
[Aaa xa2 + 2 Aaw xa (1 xa) + Aww (1 xa)
2]
(1.12)
where v is the specific volume (m3kg1 dry air), is thedry bulb temperature (C), Aaa is the second virialcoefficient for dry air(4) (m3kg1), Aaw is the interactioncoefficient for moist air(4) (m3kg1), Aww is the secondvirial coefficient for water vapour (m3kg1) and xa is themole fraction of dry air.
The mole fraction of dry air, xa, is given by:
0.62197xa = (1.13)
0.62197 + g
Properties of humid air 1-3
In the original work(1,2) and in later research(4), a thirdvirial coefficient for water vapour (Awww) appears inequation 1.12 but it is complicated to calculate and itsinfluence is insignificant. It is ignored here, without anyloss of accuracy.
Equation 1.2 yields answers of adequate precision and iseasier to use than equation 1.12.
Specific enthalpy
h = ha + g hg (1.14)
where h is the specific enthalpy of moist air (kJkg1 dryair), ha is the specific enthalpy of dry air
(7) (kJkg1), g isthe moisture content (kgkg1 dry air) and hg is the specificenthalpy of water vapour at the dry bulb temperature(8)(kgkg1 dry air).
Equation 1.1 gives answers having the same accuracy asthose obtained from equation 1.14 and is simpler to use.
1.1.4 Psychrometric properties atnon-standard barometricpressures
The tabulated psychrometric data are accurate within therange of barometric pressure from 95 kPa to 105 kPa and
hence are suitable for the whole of the UK. For pressuresoutside these limits an application of the ideal gas lawswill give answers of a little less accuracy. Better answersmay be obtained by the use of equations 1.15 and 1.16.
0.624 psgs = (1.15)(pa 1.004 ps)
(0.287 + 0.461 g) (273.15 + )v = (1.16)
pa
Corrections to specific enthalpy may be taken from Table1.1.
Figure 1.1, which gives the relationship between heightabove sea level and barometric pressure, is drawn from theequation:
pa = 101.325 exp[(9.81 z) / (101 325)] (1.17)
where pa is the particular atmospheric (barometric)pressure (kPa), is the density of air (kgm3) and z is thealtitude above sea level (m).
Alternatively, the standard relationship(12) for altitude,atmospheric pressure and temperature may be used. Thisis reproduced in Table 1.2.

1-4 Reference data
Atmospheric pressures and temperatures from 5000 m to+11 000 m may be accurately calculated(3) using thefollowing equations:
pa = 101.325 (1 2.25577 105 z)5.2559 (1.18)
= 15 0.0065 z (1.19)
where pa is the barometric pressure (kPa), is the atmos-pheric temperature (C) and z is the altitude above sealevel (m).
1.2 CIBSE psychrometric chart(10 to +60 C)
The chart has been designed(13) and constructed using thetwo fundamental properties of mass (moisture content)and energy (specific enthalpy) as linear co-ordinates.Other physical properties are not then shown as linearscales(13,14). The 30 C dry-bulb line has been constructedat right angles to lines of constant moisture content,which are horizontal. The scale of specific enthalpy isobliquely inclined to the vertical scale of moisturecontent. In this way, lines of constant dry bulb tempera-ture are approximately vertical, diverging slightly on eachside of the 30 C line, and the traditional appearance of thechart is preserved.
The wet-bulb values shown are those read from a sling ormechanically aspirated psychrometer and lines ofpercentage saturation are plotted instead of relativehumidity. Within the comfort zone, there is no practicaldifference between percentage saturation and relativehumidity. In any case, the difference diminishes assaturated or dry conditions are approached.
The psychrometric data used were taken from the tables ofthe properties of humid air presented in this chapter ofCIBSE Guide C.
1.3 CIBSE psychrometric chart (10 to 120 C)
The psychrometric chart for 10 to 120 C has been basedon the ideal gas laws. This does not give a significantdifference when compared with a chart constructed usingmore accurate data, based on the method of Goff andGratch(1,2). The principles of calculation and drawing aredetailed elsewhere(14).
