“As an industry, we have often seemed incapable of learning about the performance of our own creations, with the inevitable result that buildings regularly fail to meet their owners’ operational expectations or, worse, are demolished less than a generation after their completion. For those outside the industry the idea of continual improvement – ploughing back the lessons from one completed project to the next – must be obvious but, with few exceptions, this is rarely done by an industry too obsessed by capital cost. Shortcomings are not only irritating and costly in their own right, but also undermine attempts to achieve high levels of sustainability”.

Rab Bennetts, Bennetts Associates, June 2009

There is a growing realisation that sustainability, energy efficiency and the overall performance of new and existing buildings need to improve radically. Clients, governments and society are looking to the construction industry to meet increasingly challenging targets by creating robust sustainable investments that satisfy occupiers and tread lightly on the environment.

Soft Landings is the tool that will ensure both clients and occupiers get the best out of their new or altered buildings. It is designed to reduce tensions and frustrations that so often occur during initial occupancy. At its core is a greater involvement of designers and constructors with building users and operators before, during and after handover of building work, with an emphasis on improving operational readiness and performance in use.

Soft Landings is embedded in the entire procurement process from initial scope to well beyond project completion. Soft Landings helps to minimise the chances of unsatisfactory performance, addresses and even pre-empts problems during the early occupation phase and ensures that lessons from closer interaction with occupiers are learnt and shared.

Soft Landings can be used for new construction, refurbishment and alteration. It is designed to smooth the transition into use and to address problems that post occupancy evaluations show to be widespread.

Soft Landings starts by raising awareness of performance in use in the early stages of briefing and feasibility, helps to set realistic targets and assigns responsibilities. It then assists the management of expectations through design, construction and commissioning and into initial operation with particular attention to detail in the weeks immediately before and after handover.

Soft Landings provides a unified vehicle for engaging with outcomes throughout the process of briefing, design and delivery. It dovetails with energy performance certification, building logbooks, green leases and corporate social responsibility.

Soft Landings can run alongside any procurement process.

It costs very little, well within the margin of competitive bids.

Most of all, Soft Landings creates virtuous circles for all, and offers the best hope for truly integrated, robust and sustainable design.

It provides the best opportunity for producing low-carbon buildings that meet their design target.

SOFT LANDINGS - THE NEXT BIG THING IN DELIVERING BETTER BUILDINGS.

2010 CIBSE VIP KEYNOTE SPEAKER SEMINAR SERIES

NOVEMBER 2010

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPONSORS

Page 4: cibse mockup 1 - gbca.org.au · CIBSE is the standard setter and authority on building services engineering. It publishes Guidance and Codes which are internationally recognised as

The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers received its Royal Charter in 1976. It is the professional body that exists to ‘support the Science, Art and Practice of building services engineering, by providing our members and the public with first class information and education services and promoting the spirit of fellowship which guides our work.'

CIBSE is the standard setter and authority on building services engineering. It publishes Guidance and Codes which are internationally recognised as authoritative, and sets the criteria for best practice in the profession.

The Institution speaks for the profession and so is consulted by governments on matters relating to construction, engineering and sustainability. It is represented on major bodies and organisations which govern construction and engineering occupations in the UK, Europe and worldwide.

CIBSE promotes the career of building services engineers by accrediting courses of study in further and higher education and by approving work based training programmes. CIBSE offers qualified engineers a range of services focussed on maintaining and enhancing professional excellence throughout their careers. Once you are qualified, CIBSE offers you a range of services, all focused on maintaining and enhancing professional excellence throughout your career.

CIBSE Members belong to a global network of professional support and expertise. They receive the monthly Building Services Journal and regular email newsletters, to keep them abreast of breaking news and new opportunities. A full programme of meetings and events each year offers hundreds of opportunities for members to meet and learn from colleagues and experts, to explore new ideas and take part in continuing professional development (CPD).

Buildings account for almost 50% of damaging carbon emissions, yet innovative services design can bring dramatic improvements in energy efficiency. Our members continue to create the most environmentally friendly systems in major projects across the globe.

SOFT LANDINGS - THE NEXT BIG THING IN DELIVERING BETTER BUILDINGS.

Page 6: cibse mockup 1 - gbca.org.au · CIBSE is the standard setter and authority on building services engineering. It publishes Guidance and Codes which are internationally recognised as
