EDITORIAL“The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” Emile Hirsch, Into the Wild
It might seem odd to pronounce this phrase under the “same old” skies in Muro Leccese, yet this inaugural round of the 2014 CIK-FIA European Championships is bursting with the promise of fresh emotions and new experiences. A new feat towards the conquest of a new goal: the victory at the fi nish-line of this fi rst round and
the ultimate goal of winning the title. And a new European landscape that will take non-shifter and gearbox categories across 7 nations, from the Mediterranean Sea that looks to promised lands to the North Sea where the sun never sets. This is the magic of karting: the “same old” sport, but a unique and special adventure each time!

The 2014 CIK-FIA European Championship runs over 4 rounds for both the KF and the KFJ. The categories will run jointly for their fi rst two matches in Muro Leccese, Italy and Zuera, Spain, as well as for the closing act in Brandon, UK. In between, they will go separate ways for the third round of their title hunt: Genk, Belgium for the KF and Kristianstad, Sweden for the KF-Junior.

New addition to the 2014 CIK-FIA scene, the Swedish venue has a reputation as a circuit that guarantees fast, tight, and spectacular racing. At 1231 meters, it is the “shortest” of the fi ve venues that will welcome non-shifter karts for the European Champion title hunt.

Who will win the most prestigious karting title in Europe in 2014? The million dollar (or rather euro!) question without an easy answer. We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, let’s review who won the career-making CIK-FIA title in the past ten editions.

YESTERDAY’S STARS.. .Where are they now? We took a look back to the European crown winners of the past three editions (2011, 2012 and 2013) and found out what they are doing now. Are they still shining bright? Or did their names get lost in the crowd? Find out with us.
He’s the one who imposed the rule of law left and right in 2013. The European title came as the last trophy of a phenomenal season that earned him the fame of prodigy. So where is the 17 year old Dutch “wonder-boy” now? Well, someone like him could not but try his chance in formula racing. Max is currently racing in the FIA F3 with the Van Amersfoort Team (Dallara-Volkswagen) and has already made a name for himself in this fi rst part of the season, clocking out with great times. Perhaps genetics has something to do with it (his dad is a former Formula 1 driver), but one thing is certain: Max has true talent! .
2013 KFJ Champion: last year he was a Junior and despite being a “tiny” guy, he achieved great results all season long, earning the European title with the class and style he is now famous for. Today, the British driver has joined the queen category of non-shifter karting, the KF. Will he suceed in the diffi cult feat of doubling up on his title as a rookie in the prestigious and competitive fi eld? We can only fi nd out by keeping an eye on him this season!

YESTERDAY’S STARS.. .
2012 KF2 European Champion. Another Brit who, in his karting days, had mad skills. Two years later, he is now working his way in the Formula Renault 2.0 Series, with descreet results at that. Suffi ce it to say that the kid is already in McLaren “orbit”. Young talent joins one of those development programs of major F1 teams that shape tomorrow’s stars... get the idea? Well, that’s what Ben has been up to!
2011 “king” of Europe for the KF2 (today’s KF). That season the Belgian talent conquered the crown in the single match held in Zuera, as a member of the Energy “fl eet”. Today he is working hard to reconfi rm his skills in the world of cars. He has been racing for a few years in the Renault Clio Eurocup, after the 2012 experience in the Formula Pilota China.
KF3 European Champion in 2011 and 2012. Back then he was a “terrible” driver, in the sense that he was feared on track. He’s one of the few in history who managed to win the Junior title for two consecutive years. His promising ways were already pointing to autos back then. And, in fact, that’s where we fi nd him today. Russel opened the 2014 season wearing his new Prema race suit, with the goal of defending the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS title that the team conquered last year.

Anyone who hopes of becoming a professional formula driver has to fi rst prove his talent in Europe. It’s a known fact. Worldwide, the continent is considered the “graduation” fi eld for young talents pre-destined to be motorsport stars. Excellent circuits, top notch venues, and a racing culture that is unrivaled in the world... Let’s say it, Europe is the capital of international karting!

Not just drivers and teams...Championships and seasons are also made by nationalities and manufacturers. We’ll have to wait until the end to know the top players of 2014. In the meantime, fi nd out which countries are the most represented on track and which brands are the most popular.
NUMBERS & STATISTICS
NATIONALITIES
ENGINES
Out of the almost 20 nations across 3 continents represented in the
KF entry list, the one claiming the most drivers is Russia: 9 total.
This is further proof of the growing motorsport culture and expanding karting market in the eastern-most
nation of the “Old Continent”. Second up is Great Britain,
followed by Finland and Italy each represented by 7 drivers. Right
below of our imaginary “podium” is the trio of France, Denmark and
Poland, each with 5 entries.
3 brands for 69 title contenders. TM is the most popular, chosen by 34 entries, followed by Vortex and Parilla. To fi nd out how the three manufacturers will actually stand at the end of the Championship, we’ll have to wait for all engines to rumble their way through four exciting rounds.

4 continents and 25 nations, topped by France with 7 of
the 72 drivers enlisted for the European title hunt. The fl ags
of Great Britain and Italy are the second most represented (each by 6 drivers), followed by those of Spain and Finland (each by 5
drivers). Russia follows off the “podium” as the fourth nation for
number of entires (4 total).
The KFJ entry list features 4 different brands. Almost all drivers (70 out of 72) will be powered by the same names as the KF, with TM again as the top choice (34 drivers), followed by Vortex and Parilla. The remaining 2 drivers have decided to try their chance at the title with LKE engines.

NEW POINT SYSTEM
The “hot” phases worth points towards the Championship title are the HEATS and the FINAL. Points will be assigned to the TOP 10 of the combined Intermediate Standings (established after the Heats) and the TOP 15 of the Final.
CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM In both classes, the Championship runs over 4
rounds. Each event will comprise Free Practice,
Qualifying Practice, Qualifi cation Heats with the
possibility of a Second Chance Heat*, and a fi nal
phase made of one or two Prefi nals* and the Final.
(*Depending on the number of participants). In each
round, points are assigned to the Top 10 of the
Intermediate Classifi cation and the Top 15 of the Final
race. The title of CIK-FIA European Champion will be
awarded to the Driver with the most points overall,
with the possibility to discard the worst Intermediate
result and the worst Final result.
ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENTThe Championship is reserved respectively for
KF2 and KF3 karts, as defi ned in the Technical
Regulations. At Scrutineering, each Driver is entitled
to submit: 2 chassis of the same make, 2 engines of
the same make, plus 3 sets of Dunlop “slicks” if in
KF, or 2 sets of Vega “slicks” if in KFJ (tires will be
allocated by random draw). Karts must be presented
in full double confi guration (“dry” and “wet”) and
ready for use, with engines. In both Championships,
from Qualifying Practice on, each Driver is allowed
to use a maximum of: 2 chassis and 2 engines (those
marked at Scrutineering) and 2 sets of both slicks and
wet tires (a total of 4 front/4 rear tires of both types).
STARTING PROCEDUREAt the end of the Formation Lap, Drivers will proceed
at a reduced and constant speed towards the Start
Line, creating two lines of karts. Partial crossing of
the lanes is liable to a 3 sec. penalty, while leaving
the corridor completely and/or overtaking will be
sanctioned with a 10 sec. penalty. If a Driver stops
during the Formation Lap, he may try to start again
from the back of the formation. If he tries to re-start
ahead of the fi eld he will be excluded from the event.
Karts must maintain their position until the start
signal is given. If the Track Clerk/Race Director is not
satisfi ed, he will switch on the orange light, which
means that another Formation Lap must be covered.
SUSPENDING & RESUMING A RACEIn case of an accident blocking the track or dangerous
conditions, the Track Clerk/Race Director may decide
to stop the race, ordering the showing of the RED FLAG
on the Finish Line and at Marshals’ posts. If the race is
a Practice: all karts must reduce speed and return to
the Service Park. If the race is a Heat, a Prefi nal, or a
Final: all karts must reduce speed and will be directed
either to the Service Park entrance, or asked to stop
