FUTURE EVENTS

Location. Please contact us if you

have a good location to host any of

the future events. Events should

be free and can be sponsored by

local companies. Capacity for the

venue should hold at least 50

people.

Time. Events can be morning,

afternoon or evening on most

weekdays. Currently we’ve

decided after work on a weeknight

seems to fit easiest with most

schedules. We’ll try to provide at

least a 3 week notice for future

events.

Ideas. We are looking for

feedback on type of topics for

future events. Depending on

experience level material can be

adjusted to help build the group.

Location TIME IDEAS

Format. We can create hands-on

learning events or we can focus on

discussions and how individuals

are utilizing Tableau in their work

environment.

Volunteers. Looking for

volunteers that have material or

topics they would like to present

and looking for experienced

members to help other members

when questions arise.

Happy Hour. Future happy hour

to help meet people with help from

a little liquor courage. Willing to

accept sponsors.

DATA TIPS

Try not to have summarized data (Totals/Grand Totals can easily be

calculated in Tableau)

Remove empty rows and columns

Provide column headers (careful with headers beginning with numbers

or special characters)

Rename any duplicate header names

Make sure you data is correctly delimited (avoid data with different data

types in the same column)

Only have the data you want to use (remove any unnecessary text)

HOW TO ACHIEVE OUR GOAL

Tableau’s Free Excel Add-

In. Great to us within excel

and will mimic other types of

paid for tools to reshape data.

TABLEAU ADD-IN

Excel

Transpose Command.

Good for limited amounts of

data. Quick and easy to

implement, requires the least

amount of experience and

training.

TRANSPOSE

Excel

Database Programming.

Pivot will rotate rows to

columns and Unpivot will

rotate columns to rows.

Requires SQL code.

PIVOT & UNPIVOT

Microsoft SQL

12

EXCEL ADD-IN

After you download the add-in from

Tableau’s website you must active the

add-in on your excel sheet for it to be

available.

Page 13: Cincinnati Tableau User Group Event #1

13

EXCEL ADD-IN

After you have activated the add-in, the Tableau tab is now available in your

menu. You should highlight the data that you want to reshape and then press

the Reshape Data icon and hit okay in the popup dialog box. The add-in will

take all the columns and create 2 new columns. One column is the unique

values of the column headers while the other are the values in the columns

from the original data.

14

EXCEL TRANSPOSE

Copy the Product name to a column

Right click to Paste

Copy all the monthly values for the

Product

Right click and select Paste

Options – Transpose paste the

transposed values to the column

after the Product name

Transpose does not work with Cut

& Paste

Copy the Product name to fill out all

the column values next to the

Transpose values for that product

Repeat for each of the products

DATA TIPS

Defining the data in the correct format will solve possible issues you could have

in Tableau

Structuring / Reshaping data into a “Row-Centric” design will be the easiest for

Tableau to consume

Tableau’s Excel add-in is the easiest technique to reshape your data

Pivot and Unpivot are Microsoft SQL commands other programs have similar

types of reshaping tools/keywords

PostgreSQL: crosstab http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.2/static/tablefunc.html

Review how your data loads into Tableau especially focus on if your data is a

Dimension or Measure and if it you have one or multiple fields
