keith Jonesenvironmental advisor - national Trust

Keith has worked for the National Trust for twelve years during which his roles have included Head Warden and Countryside Manager of Snowdonia and Llyn. His current role as Environmental Advisor includes micro and medium scale renewable technologies, water efficiency and energy efficiency in historic buildings. Recent projects include large biomass, mansion solar PV project at seven sites, hydro evaluations and installations. A 41% energy efficiency gain across all of the historic properties in Wales has recently been achieved. Successes in 2012 include winning this year’s Ashden Gold Award for Sustainability and the Co-Operative Community Energy Challenge. Keith has a special interest in heat loss and energy efficiency in historic buildings, de-bunking standardised approaches to non-standard buildings and investigating new ways of integrating renewable technologies into old buildings without impacting their historic significance.

rory Cullen FCioBChair of CioB’s Conservation, Maintenance and refurbishment group (CMrg)

Rory has been Head of Buildings for the National Trust for ten years where he has responsibility for ensuring the highest building standards are maintained for more than 30,000 buildings and structures across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, many of which are listed. He currently Chairs the Conservation, Maintenance and Refurbishment Group and a key objective of his tenure as Chair of the Group is to develop closer working relationships within the CIOB’s Faculties and Special Interest Groups to enable members to gain a broader understanding of other areas in their industry. Rory has an Msc in Building Conservation, is a Fellow of the CIOB and a member of the IHBC. In his spare time he plays cricket and is a classic car enthusiast.

eleanor underhillgeneral Manager - Quarry Bank Mill, national Trust

Eleanor joined the National Trust three years ago, having spent her previous working life in the newspaper industry. She worked as an Advertisement Sales Manager at the Yorkshire Post, moving on through various roles to become Managing Director of a group of local newspapers in Cheshire, a division of a large US owned publishing company. Redundancy allowed Eleanor to re-think her career and three years ago, armed with her general management experience, a long-forgotten degree in history and some experience in the Third Sector (as a Trustee for two charities), she applied and was selected, for “the best job in the world” – General Manager of Quarry Bank Mill and the Styal Estate. Eleanor has not looked back and she and the team of staff and volunteers at Quarry Bank are proud of what they’ve achieved in three years, being fully committed to offering their visitors the best possible day out and being excited about their ambitious plans for the future.

Mike Foy FCioBCioB Trustee

Mike’s forty years’ experience in construction-related positions has brought him into regular contact with the supply side of the construction industry involving contractors with local, national and international experience. Being at Director level for the last twenty years and progressing from a site based Apprentice has given Mike a clear understanding of the entire construction process and its complexities. His experience covers a wide range of Public Sector projects including Education, Leisure, Public Buildings, Housing and Engineering works. Mike’s early involvement with the CIOB was enhanced by actively engaging in the activities of his local centre, as Secretary and then Chair.

John edwards FCioBassistant director - Cadw

Qualified in architectural and building conservation at postgraduate level, as well as being RICS accredited in building conservation, from 2009 to 2011 John held a senior professional position in the Conservation Department of English Heritage where he had a national remit. John recently joined Cadw, the Welsh Government’s Historic Environment Service where, as professional lead on building conservation issues, he represents them at BSI and in the development of European Standards which includes energy conservation. John is past Chair of the CIOB’s CMRG and is currently the Chair of the UK Task Group on the revision of BS7913: 1998: The Principles of the Conservation of Historic Buildings. He also advises on the Welsh Government’s Regeneration and Housing retrofit programmes. John is responsible for the management, operation and conservation of the Cadw estate comprising 128 historic sites, five of which are World Heritage Sites.

Steve Mcglade MCioB Senior project Manager - national Trust

A Chartered Building Surveyor with over 25 years’ experience, Steve has worked for the National Trust since 1995. He started his career as Assistant Building Manager in the then Mercia region, where he was responsible for all building works to properties at the northern end of the region (Dunham Massey, Quarry Bank Mill, Lyme Park, Speke Hall and Little Moreton Hall). In 2003 Steve became Senior Building Surveyor in the new North West region and took on responsibility for managing building works in Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria. In 2007 he became the Regional Building Manager for this region and took on the strategic management of the Building Surveying Team and Direct Labour work force, planning the required capital investment to maintain and conserve the portfolio in the North West. In 2010 Steve became a Senior Project Manager with the National Trust and has a national remit to manage the most complex projects in the Organisation. He has been responsible for a number of significant projects including mansion re-roofing to Chirk, Penrhyn, Dunham Massey and Lyme, catering and retail works at Dunham, Lyme, Quarry Bank Mill, Speke Hall, Little Moreton Hall, new acquisition projects in Liverpool and eco-friendly volume house construction in Stamford Brook Altrincham. In 2011 he was awarded an MSc in Sustainable Heritage from University College London. Steve is a keen rugby union and football fan and is learning to play the guitar.

ed Morton Managing director - Morton partnership

Ed Morton is the Managing Director of the Morton Partnership, a firm of civil and structural engineers and historic building specialists, with twenty employees. The company is renowned nationally and internationally for its conservation work. Ed is an Engineer accredited in conservation through the CARE scheme run by the Institute of Civil Engineers and Institute of Structural Engineers.Ed is Engineer to Canterbury Cathedral and York Minster and is currently also working on projects at Ely, Peterborough, Wakefield and Sheffield Cathedrals. Ed works extensively for the National Trust at properties including Bodiam, Scotney and Sissinghurst Castles, Chartwell, Knole, Stowe Landscape Gardens to name a few. He has been the Structural Engineer on two English Heritage major projects - Danson House and Charles Darwin’s house at Downe. He also acts as consultant to the Heritage Lottery Fund and numerous Local Authorities. Current projects include a ten year rolling programme of re-roofing Barry’s cast iron roofs at the Palace of Westminster, ‘Save Canterbury Cathedral repairs’, York Minster Revealed project, Lincoln Castle Revealed, Phase 3 repairs of Stowe House in Buckinghamshire, Bramall Hall in Stockport as well as numerous other domestic listed buildings and structures. New build projects include a recently completed timber bridge at Stowe, a contemporary new bridge for an Oxford College, a cantilevered inverted stair memorial in Bethnal Green as well as several large houses. Ed lectures widely for universities, local authorities, SPAB, as well as institutions, such as ICE and IStructuE, RTPI, etc.

dr John rhys Williams Senior Technical Consultant - Trada

John is one of TRADA Technology’s Senior Technical Consultants with over sixteen years’ experience as a Timber Technologist and is a member of the International Research Group on Wood Protection (IRG) and a Member of the Institute of Wood Science. He has undertaken inspections in Europe and the Far East and has delivered training programmes in West Africa. He has extensive experience in surveying and providing advice and technical solutions to a diverse client base. He is an experienced lecturer on timber for architectural use and timber technology and has published a number of specialist papers. John specialises in assessing the strength, condition and reviewing service life as part of asset management planning for timber in historic buildings. He has carried out non-destructive condition and strength assessments on a number of historic buildings and structures including: Somerset House, Woolwich Royal Arsenal, Albert Bridge, Newcastle High Level Bridge, Leeds City Museum and numerous textile mills.

Charles anelay FCioBSpecial projects director - William anelay ltd

Chares Anelay graduated from University College, London with an MSc in Building Economics and Management. After spending time in London gaining construction knowledge and experience, Charles returned to Yorkshire to begin working for specialist and restoration contractor William Anelay and now holds the position of Special Projects Director. He has overseen a number of prestigious projects including a new build chapel in the classical style, restoration works at Victoria Baths in Manchester (first winner of the BBC’s Restoration Programme) and has recently commenced a Heritage Lottery Funded project, the Lion Salt Works in Cheshire. Charles has been a member of the CIOB since 1988 and is currently a member of the CMRG. In addition, he is a past Council Member of the Lead Contractors Association and a guest lecturer for the Conservation Course at the Institute of Advanced Architectural studies in York and is a Committee Member of the National Heritage Training Group.

roger Cayzer Buildings advisor – national Trust

Roger’s entire career has been as a practitioner Building Surveyor working on predominantly historic buildings. Formerly as the National Trust East of England Regional Building Manager he was responsible for new build, adaptive reuse and maintenance programmes throughout the region. Following this, he was appointed to a country wide post as Project Manager on the adaptive reuse programme for the National Trust. Prior to joining the National Trust, Roger was employed at the Palace of Westminster and was involved with a variety of conservation, refurbishment and maintenance projects throughout the Parliamentary Estate for the House of Commons and House of Lords. Roger started his career with the Greater London Council/Inner London Education Authority Department of Architecture. This was at the onset of the ‘rehabilitation’ of many Inner London areas working on pre-1919 buildings consisting of historic housing, Dockland warehouses, public buildings and 19th century Board of London Schools. He has recently become very committed to the National Trust Apprenticeship Training Scheme and is using his past experience in conservation to support a better understanding and knowledge of conservation throughout the Construction Industry.

Tony Wright director of Facilities Management

Tony joined Sykes & Son Limited in September 2008 to establish the Facilities Management Division including the Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance and Projects Department. Tony holds over 35 years’ experience of delivering Facilities and Building Management contracts in Critical Environments including Historic Listed buildings such as Galleries and Museums, Academic, Banking and Oil sector portfolios. Tony shares his time between Winchester and London and is currently responsible for the operational and financial performance of all FM Maintenance contracts to both the Clients and the Sykes & Son Board. Tony has brought his leadership style to Sykes & Son, building an already well respected firm into a trusted partner of the National Trust, English Heritage, Somerset House, The Wallace Collection and The Courtauld Institute of Art, clients who demand a unique level of service as well as the best value in the marketplace today.
