The

solutio

n is our people - Investing in GreatnessThe Foundation emerged from the vision of

Mr Allan Gray to make a sustainable long-term contribution to Southern Africa. The Foundation is of the firm belief that high-impact, responsible entrepreneurs will dramatically contribute to positive economic, social and political change. The Foundation therefore identifies, selects and invests in potential greatness over the long-term through its Scholarship and Fellowship opportunities.

The Foundation’s investment approach provides access to education alongside personal leadership and entrepreneurial mindset development. Once formal education is completed the Foundation encourages work experience that complements its Fellows’ personal passion and purpose along with growing relevant skills. It is the Foundation’s hope that Fellows will then move into areas of influence where they will effect lasting change and positive impact.

E2 venture  capital fund is partnering with the Foundation in South Africa to fund eligible Allan Gray Fellows’ entrepreneurial ventures in the future.

Mission

To promote progress through entrepreneurship in an integrated Southern Africa by fostering high-impact, responsible entrepreneurs.

Vision

In the coming years there will emerge from diverse communities a new generation of high-impact, responsible entrepreneurs; individuals of passion, integrity and innovation who will be at the forefront of the continuing economic and social transforma-tion of this region.

These individuals will be ambassadors of the power of initiative, determination and excellence, acting as role models, that many more may follow in their pioneering footsteps.

Ethos

The Foundation’s ethos, or shared fundamentals, is made up of its tactical focus on Education and Experience complemented by the personal traits of Effort and Ethics.

includes comprehensive tertiary financial support to selected students, known as Candidate Allan Gray Fellows.

The Fellowship is the most comprehensive and stimulating university scholarship opportunity in South Africa. The programme includes seminars, guest speakers, experiential learning activities and project-based learning deliverables.

The Fellowship covers the following:

■■ Full cost of university tuition

■■ Full cost of accommodation plus meal, book and tutor allowances

■■ A monthly living stipend

■■ Academic support and access to an entrepre-neurial and personal leadership programme

■■ Mentorship, both from individually assigned Foundation employed staff, as well as industry specific Mentors

■■ Access to potential postgraduate funding for graduated Fellows

All applicants are expected to exhibit an entre-preneurial attitude and a belief in the future of South Africa. The Foundation believes that holistic quality education is an important part of developing responsible entre-

preneurs. Education is therefore a core part of the model used for long-term investment in Allan Gray Scholars and Candidate Allan Gray Fellows.

The Circle of Excellence network is a Foundation initiative that was launched in 2008 to identify and honour South Africa’s top secondary schools for their excellence in education and their consistent delivery of successful candidates to the Fellowship. The Circle of Excellence Schools also provides the pool from which the placement schools for the Scholarship are chosen. It is a partnership seeking to strategically support and encourage institutions of educational excellence in South Africa, which are critical to the region’s collective futures.

The Circle of Excellence Conference is an annual event to celebrate and further empower the schools within the network. The principals of each of the 2014 Circle of Excellence Schools were invited to attend the event at Rhodes University.

In keeping with the theme Shifting from Excellence to Influence, the 2014 principals’ conference will explore opportunities to establish schools as entrepreneurial pipelines. The conference aimed to achieve the following:

■■ Unpack the underlying knowledge, experience, personal attributes and competencies of high school learners with strong entrepreneurial leadership orientation;

■■ Engage with Allan Gray Fellows and Candidate Fellows who epitomise this emerging entrepreneurial leadership profile

■■ Learn from thought leaders on how to prepare young people for life, entrepreneurship and work in a global economy;

■■ Interact with the Allan Gray Centre for Leadership Ethics and how they catalyse ethics/ethical leadership; and

■■ Understand how to take this learning forward and what it means for your school on ‘Monday Morning’.

Mr Bruce has been associated with Kingswood College since 1977 when he started as a

Student Assistant in Jagger House at the tender age of 19. He spent five years at Kingswood College as a Student Assistant - the last three years in Wood House - and then after doing his compulsory Military Training at Oudtshoorn and then in Namibia, he took up a post at KC as a Geography and Physical Education teacher. He taught at KC for a further 5 years ending up as Head of Geography and Physical Education and as the Housemaster of Chubb House. learning to teach almost every subject under the sun under the benign influence of a passionate and committed principal. Ms Heidi Salzwedel, Design and Technology Teacher, St Andrew’s College

Circle of Excellence Principals’ Conference 2014 Speeches

Ms Salzwedel teaches Design as well as Design and Technology at St Andrew’s College in

Grahamstown. She chose to teach Design because it is a form of applied intelligence and creativity and catalyses many practical solutions to problems; both socio-economic problems and environmental. It is also a cutting-edge field which is growing in South Africa. She studied Fine Art through Rhodes University and continues to produce and exhibit her own art annually at the National Arts Festival, as well as other forums.

She has a keen interest in community engagement and assists with developmental/community engagement endeavours at her school, and in her own capacity. She is currently studying towards a Master’s degree in Visual Arts (Art Education) through Stellenbosch University. The studies have been invaluable in terms of how they complement her teaching and her teaching has in turn provided a forum from which to base richly rewarding research experiences.

Mr Bruce Damons, Principal, Sapphire Primary School

Mr Damons has been principal at Sapphire Road Primary

since 2000. For years he has contributed to the debate of schools as centres of community on a number of platforms, including academia, the local and national press, government and non-governmental structures as well as the trade union movement. This has aided in the development of a strong sense of school ownership and agency among learners, parents, teachers and the broader community. His success in integrating Sapphire Road Primary with its surrounding community has garnered him several awards, including the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Alumni Association Special Award in 2012, for his role in developing community centred schools, and a National Teaching Award in 2008, for excellence in primary school leadership.

During his term as principal he has overseen a number of improvements to Sapphire Road Primary. Among them are the growth of the school from 516 learners in 2000 to 1199 in 2014, its development towards becoming the first no-fee school in 2005 and the establishment of a vibrant HIV/AIDS awareness and counselling programme, which has been featured in a Swedish DVD production. Ameil Harikishun Fellow, Grahamstown

I am a proud South African, born and raised in Durban, and I believe in the concept of being a

global citizen.

The idea that I was one of billions of people on earth made me feel empowered to be significant; the idea that a single person can change the outlook of humanity. It is safe to say that I have always considered myself a budding scientist and I fell naturally into marine sciences. The natural world has always captivated me and it is a fibre that has woven itself into my career, ambitions and how I plan on contributing to society.
