The 3RV101 MSP’s, can be used as components in GroupInstallation per NEC 430-53(C) to turn motors on and off. Eachdevice has built-in heater elements that provide overload pro-tection and magnetic trip elements to protect the motor. Whenthe 3RV101 is used as a component in Group Installation, mul-tiple MSP’s can be installed below one circuit breaker to pro-tect its own motor. A contactor can be mounted to the MSP toprovide a remotely operated starter.

Motor Starter Protectors of the SIRIUS 3RV1 series are ap-proved for u/s. According to UL 508 and C22.2 No.14
they can also be used with a load feeder contactor. TheseMotor Starter Protectors can
be used as "Manual Motor Starter" for "Group Fusing", or for "Group Installation" or as
"Combination Motor Controller Type E". Additional information is found on 1/29.
3RV1 as "Manual Motor Starter"If used as "Manual Motor Starter", the MSP is always oper-ated in combination with a short-circuit protection device (upstream short-circuit protec-tion device).
As short-circuit protection device any fusible link ("group fusing") or circuit-breaker ("group installation") of a type
and size compliant with Ameri-can Basic Standard NFPA 70, Article 430-53 (c) can be selected for sufficient protec-tion of the power supply cables.

3RV1 Motor Starter ProtectorsGeneral Data SIRIUS
Overview
S00 MSP with laterally mounted undervoltage re-lease with leading auxiliary switch 3RV10 Motor Starter Protectors
(MSP’s) are built for a world of applications while meeting the requirements of control users worldwide. Each MSP features a manual ON/OFF switch, a Class 10 adjustable bimetallic overload relay (Class 20 avail-able in the two largest frame sizes), and magnetic trip ele-ments for short circuit protec-tion.
Construction
The motor starter protectors are available in four sizes:
• Size S00 - 3RV101Maximum rated current is 12 Amps. Suitable for motors up to 10 hp at 600V. Available in both screw terminal and Cage Clamp versions.
• Size S0 - 3RV102Maximum rated current is 25 Amps. Suitable for motors up to 20 hp at 600V.
• Size S2 - 3RV103Maximum rated current is 50 Amps. Suitable for motors up to 50 hp at 600V.
• Size S3 - 3RV104Maximum rated current is 100 Amps. Suitable for motors up to 100 hp at 600V.
Functions
Releases
3RV1 motor starter protectors are equipped with bimetallic-based, inverse-time delayed overload releases - electromag-netic short-circuit releases.
The overload releases can be set in accordance with the load current. The overcurrent re-leases are permanently set to a value 13 times the rated current and thus enable trouble-free start-up of motors.
The scale cover can be sealed to prevent unauthorized adjust-ments to the set current.
Release classes
The release classes of thermally delayed releases are based on the tripping time (tA) at 7.2 times the operational current in cold state (excerpt from IEC 60 947-4):
• CLASS 10 A 2 s < tA w 10 s• CLASS 10 4 s < tA w 10 s• CLASS 20 6 s < tA w 20 s• CLASS 30 9 s < tA w 30 s
The release must trip within this time!
Operating mechanisms
S00 MSP are actuated via a rocker operating mechanism and S0, S2 and S3 MSP’s via a rotary operating mechanism. If the MSP trips, the rotary operat-ing mechanism switches to the tripped position to indicate this. Before the MSP is reclosed, the rotary operating mechanism must be reset manually to 0 position, in order to prevent the former from closing by mistake before the fault has been cleared.
In the case of MSP’s with rotary operating mechanisms, an electrical signal can be output via a signalling switch to indi-cate that the MSP has tripped.
All operating mechanisms can be locked in 0 position with a padlock (shackle diameter 3.5 to 4.5 mm).
Application
Operating conditions
3RV1 MSP’s are suitable for use in any climate. They are designed for operation in closed rooms under normal conditions (e.g. no dust, corro-sive vapours or harmful gases). Suitable enclosures must be provided for installation in dusty or damp rooms.
Motor Protection
3RV MSP’s use bimetallic heater elements to provide class 10 or 20 overcurrent pro-tection for both AC and DC motors. The bimetallic heaters sense the motor current directly, so the overloads are insensitive to high frequencies, harmonic waves and sinusoi-dal currents and voltages.
Each MSP has a fourth bimetal-lic strip that reacts only to the ambient temperature inside the control panel. This ambient compensation prevents the MSP from nuisance tripping when the panel temperature is higher than the ambient tem-perature of the motor.
A built-in differential trip bar causes the MSP to trip faster on a phase loss condition, to help reduce motor damage from phase loss.
Magnetic trip elements in each MSP take the device off line when it senses currents of 12 times the maximum FLA dial setting.
