April 2014

Dear Friends, There is a Methodist minister who was continually bragging to his Baptist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, all his clergy friends in the local ministerium about the greatness of his church. No matter what they said, he always found a way to claim that the Methodists were better. He had passion. Eventually his friends got tired of this and decided to play a prank on the Methodist. One day they dropped a tablet in his coffee and drugged him into a deep sleep. They took him down to the cemetery, laid him in a borrowed coffin, next to a freshly dug grave. They hid behind the bushes to see what would happen. Half an hour later, the Methodist began to awake. Yawning and looking around, he began to notice the coffin, the tombstones and the open grave. Then he shouted: "Amen! Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! The day of resurrection has come and the Methodists are the first ones out!" Well, I’m not sure about Methodist being the first ones out. Some might barely make it, but there is going to be a resurrection. Unless the resurrection is the centrality of our faith, as it says in I Corinthians 15, our faith is useless and in vain. The entire Christian message hinges upon the fact of the Resurrection We have this hope because of the reality of His resurrection: no body was found, Jesus appeared to 500 people, and the apostles (except John) were martyred for Him. The apostles wouldn’t die for a hoax. For me it doesn’t make sense if there is no resurrection. Let us live as people of the resurrection. Our bodies will one day be resurrected after our death but our souls are resurrected now. We are transformed by the power of Holy Spirit through the Resurrection of Jesus the Christ. We have been given new life as our Lenten series indicated. We have been given new hearts - changed hearts - that allow us to love as God has loves us unconditionally. Let us love and care for others as He as loved and cared for us. One way to show this is to participate in the Lansdale Day of Service sponsored by the North Penn Partnership of Churches on May 3rd from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. So as you celebrate the resurrection of Jesus the Christ, live the life by serving others two weeks later. God bless and have a blessed Easter. In God’s Love,

Pastor Max

Choir News

Easter arrives this month – the Chancel Choir will

partner with Pastor Max again this year in a sermon

dialog of music and preaching.

The choir will perform three

anthems by Keith Getty and

Stuart Townend, all from the

cantata “The Risen Christ”.

The Chancel Choir has been

performing pieces by Messrs,

Getty and Townend for some

years now. The famous Irish

duo has captured melodies and messages in their music

that are unequalled in the traditional/contemporary

religious music genre.

Our Children’s Choir will sing and the Broad Street Brass will be here performing with the Chancel Choir including the “Hallelujah” chorus from Handel’s “Messiah” at the conclusion of the service. This Just In: We have just learned that Keith & Kristyn Getty will be performing locally in early May at Calva-ry Baptist Church at the corner of Valley Forge Road and Sumneytown Pike. The date is May 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Contact Calvary Baptist for more details.

Get on the Energy Bus

Leadership training was held at LUMC on March 8th. Twelve people attended this program facilitated by Cindy Schertz. In her words it was a “small but mighty” group who represented a large cross-section of the groups at LUMC. And the group was very excited to have one of our youth participate.

The training focused on the book, The Energy Bus, written by Jon Gordon. This book is the current theme book of the Eastern PA Conference. Cindy tied the main concepts of The Energy Bus with those taught during the leadership training held a few years ago. There was a lot of lively discussion on how to apply these principles as leaders at Lansdale Methodist.

One of the main themes emphasized in this book is Positive Energy, focusing on the positive and not the negative. Also, you are the driver of your own bus and you must determine where it is going; in other words you must have a vision of your desired destination and planned goals or steps that will get you there. These principles apply in all aspects of your life (work, church and personal life) as well as to organizations and businesses.

The participants also had a brief time to discuss how their work area, ministry or team could contribute to the 2014 goals established for LUMC. A lot of great ideas were generated in a brief period of time.

This is an exciting time at LUMC and our leadership is prepared to embrace our future with teamwork, cooperation and goals that will take us out of our comfort zones and help us to grow in our faith and service.

Exciting Announcement –

Attention ALL Women

On Saturday June 14th a spe-cial event for the women of LUMC and the community will be held in our church. Marie Monville will be the speaker for this event.

Marie Monville (formerly Marie Roberts) is the young widow of Charlie Roberts, the man responsi-ble for the Nickel Mines tragedy which resulted in the death of five Amish girls and injured five more. Marie, the mother of three, decided that this tragedy would not define her life and the lives of her chil-dren. Marie recently wrote a book entitled One Light Still Shines. Her message is that “no matter how tragic your circumstance, your life is not a tragedy. It is a love story. And in your love story, when you think all the lights have gone out, one light still shines.” Mark your calendars for this special event and invite your friends. The morning will start with a continen-tal breakfast and fellowship time, followed by a time of singing and music from our very own Praise Band, and then Marie Monville’s talk. Marie’s book will be available for purchase in Stringer after the event and she will be available to sign your copy. More information will be available shortly. Our vi-sion for this event is to FILL our sanctuary. There is no cost (a free will offering will be taken) but a reser-vation will be required.

Letter to the Congregations of Central District From

Your District Superintendent

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

“I thank my God every time I remember you.” (Philippians 1:3) These words written by Apostle Paul fully capture my experience in serving as Central District superintendent for the past two and a half years. What a privilege it is for me to sit with you in worship, deliver God’s Word to you, participate with you in mission projects, attend your special events, mediate situations within your congregations, discern God’s will for your new appointment, engage with you in discussions, facilitate your mergers, conduct your charge conferences, administer the functioning of your district office (with Doris, of course), and everything else God has called me to say or do on your behalf. I thank God for your positive attitude and cooperative spirit as we try to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Your desire to be vital congregations is present, even as we are still in the process of discovering what that means and how to make it happen. Thank you! I thank God for allowing me to be a part of your congregational life, for inviting me to share the joys and challenges of being a Christian community. On those occasions when I am not quite sure what to say or what to do, you encourage and support my leadership. Thank you! I thank God for placing us on a journey to spiritual excellence where we may become more committed to giving God our best. You are exploring new approaches to ministry, resourcing each other more intentionally, and increasing your commitment to connectional giving. Thank you! I thank God for the new ventures that have been placed before us as a district. Mission ConneXion, Haiti Hot Lunch Global Mission Project, District Resource Fund have already received support from many congregations. I ask that you continue to offer prayers and lend your support to strengthen the ministry God has given to us as Central District. Thank you!

“I am confident of this very thing, that God who began a good work in you will complete it by the day of Jesus Christ. “ (Philippians 1: 6)

Counting it all joy, Rev. Dr. Anita Adams Powell Central District Superintendent

Happy Easter! Jesus has risen! Wow, how blessed we are to have Jesus as our Savior.

We have an upcoming Good Friday Event for children ages 4-6th grade. They will learn what Good Friday and Easter really mean to us. They will experience God’s love through a les-son, crafts and a special snack. This event is free, but please register by April 11th. There are registration forms on the sign up board by Stringer, on the small table outside of Bright Begin-nings, and online on the church’s website.

Confirmation class is well underway and having a great time learning about Jesus, our Meth-odist traditions and being committed follower of Jesus. The class is taking a trip to Beth Ye-shua Messianic Synagogue in Philadelphia on Friday, April 11th. A Messianic synagogue is a place of worship for Jewish followers of Jesus. The trip will help the students link Jewish tradi-tion to Christianity and experience how Jesus worshipped. This trip is also open to other church members who would like to go. Please contact Liz Bonner for more details on this wonderful trip.

Our Lenten Mission Project is being well supported by the children and adults of the Sunday school. The mission project is “Feed the hungry children-Near and Far”. It is a twofold mission. The first is the international support of “The Haiti Hot Lunch Program” which is supported and run through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief.) The Hot Lunch program pro-vides children in Methodist schools with hot, nutritional meals that many children otherwise would not receive. It has brought children back to school and, because they are fed, they are learning better and getting educated! The Sunday School children were given little blue “lunch bags” to collect their donations in. These will be returned to church on Easter.

The second part of our Mission Project is “Manna’s-Healthy Snack Bag Program.” Each month, Manna distributes more than 3000 snack bags for after-school homework clubs held at the North Penn and Indian Valley Boys and Girls Clubs. The program supports the children in the community, providing snacks that offer the energy and nutrition necessary to power through their homework and succeed in school. Our Sunday School children will be donating healthy snack foods. On May 4, the Sunday School will have a combined program so all the children can help to assemble the snack bags to be delivered to Manna.

Foods to donate include: Animal Crackers, Cereal-Chex, Cheerios, Unsweetened Cereal, Cheez-It Crackers, Fruit Snacks, Goldfish Cracker, Graham Crackers, Granola, Mini Rice Cakes, Packaged dry fruit, Mini Pretzels, Raisins, Teddy Grahams, and Whole Wheat Crackers. There are red barrels for the food donations located outside of Stringer Auditorium and in the Primary Sunday School Classroom upstairs.

Please support these two wonderful missions with your monetary and food donations. Let us be the Hands and Feet of Christ as we take care of his children!

Thank you everyone for the prayers, words of comfort and concern and the cards following my father’s death. His failing health meant it was only a matter of time, but those last hours still came upon us so suddenly. God answers prayers in His time and my fa-ther is now resting in peace in his heavenly home. Praise God and praise be to all of you for your compassion and thoughtfulness.

MUSIC CLASSES for families with young children

It is believed that all children are musical and learn best from the example of the adults closest to them in a re-laxed environment. I will be starting up classes for families who would like to expose their little ones to rhythm, folk tunes and dance. Classes will start here at LUMC on April 22 from 6pm till apx. 6:30pm and will run for 10 weeks. More sessions will follow. Please contact me at [email protected] for registration, class fees and more information. I can also be reached at 267-536-5706.

A Thank You for Maryellen Reinmiller and Deb Neild, Paul and I would like to thank both of you for all your help with my parents Fran and Tony Mackiewicz. Thank you for all your visits and for getting my Mother around on all those bad weather days. Also, thank you for staying with her while my Dad was moved from the hospital and settled into Golden Living. This has been a very difficult time for both of them as they have always been together. They both enjoyed the flowers and the card that you brought for my Dad on his Birthday. They are grateful that you bring them communion and the love of our church. God Bless, Paul and Karen Alger
