I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” -Isaiah 46:4 October 23 rd is an important day at CHUMC. It is also in keeping with the Virginia Annual Conference’s call to recognize the work and ministry of older adults in local churches. During the 8:45 and 11:00 o’clock services, we will be focusing on the collective heritage we have received from our older members. The theme for that day is: God’s Gift of Long Life. CHUMC has been well served over the years by those we consider to be our “older members.” It is therefore fitting that as we look to the future we recognize and give thanks for those who have helped us get to this point in the life of the church. At the 11 o’clock service, we will present a special recognition for our members who are 90 years and older. Following the service, a luncheon and fellowship will take place in the Barton Heights Fellowship Hall. We need your help to make sure that we recognize all who have volunteered tirelessly they time and service over the years in making disciples for Jesus Christ. Thank you, members of Chamberlayne Heights

UMC. Your Sunday donation of 68 pounds of food deliv-

ered on Monday, September 4, was the first

private donation received by the Lambs' Basket for the

previous 4 days, and they were happy to have it. Their

cupboards were pretty bare. At the very least, we were

able to help one family get through the next few days.

The Seniors met September 8th after a two month summer break. We had a delicious covered dish lunch. Then we shared our individual experiences concerning the many power outages caused by Hurricane Irene. We en-joyed meeting our new Music Direc-tor, Kristen Schussler and our Office Administrator, Julie Crawford. It was so interesting having them tell us about their education and facts about their lives before they came to CHUMC.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 13. We will have a covered dish lunch. Our program will be pre-sented by the amazing Bill Young. His program will be “Look Around You” which will tell us facts and tales about Lord, Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts in 1907-1910. Come and learn and enjoy this program and our fellowship!

One of the local opportunities at our doorstep for reaching out into the community and “living the word” is working with up to 20 youngsters who attend Chamberlayne Elementary School. Our tutoring program is scheduled to begin its fifth year of operation on November 10, 2011 and run through April 27, 2012. Snack suppers will be offered to students at 5:30 P.M., and tutoring starts around 6:00, ending promptly at 7:00. Please complete in this instrument and submit it to Helen Wood or the church office by October 16, 2011. A SERVICE IN CELEBRATION of

GOD’S GIFT OF LONG LIFE Sunday, October 23, 2011 Make plans now to be in attendance for a special time of worship celebrating the blessing of having older adults in our congregation. We will have a guest speaker at both services and worship will focus on the collective heritage we have received from our older members. The Joy Ringers will play at both services and the 11 o’clock service will feature special recognition for our members who are 90 years and older. The day will conclude with lunch and a time of fellowship in Barton Heights Hall. Look for further details in upcoming Sunday bulletins. If you know of a CHUMC member or are a CHUMC member who is 90 years or older, please contact the church office at 266-3551 so you or your loved one can be recognized.
