Pastor's Business Card A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote 'Revelation 3:20' on the back of it and stuck it in the door. When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, 'Genesis 3:10.' Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 begins 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.' Genesis 3:10 reads, 'I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.'

The Senior Fellowship is looking for more members for their group. If you are 55 or older, please join them on Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. in Wesley Hall

Dear Asbury Friends, I appreciate all you do for me. The visits, cards, and flowers are sent with love. Thank you. I am very grateful.

Mae McCabe

I want to thank my Asbury family for the support they gave me during the Memorial Day Parade.  It was an honor to be chosen Parade Marshal, and I enjoyed seeing all of my friends cheering me on from the church yard.

Love to all,Allen

Dear Asbury, I’m graduating this year and off to college. No more fund raisers. I do thank you for the support you gave me for the Police Dept, Fire Dept. and others over the years.

Thanks again,Destiny Bullard

Dear Memorials Committee and Senior Fellowship, Thank you very much for your recent monetary donation to the service men and women project fund. Your contribution will allow us to continue this worthwhile project as long as we continue to have military personnel serving in harm’s way. For this, I am extremely grateful. Your contributions will either help pay the postage to send our care packages to the personnel we are currently supporting, or, will allow us to purchase items we are in need of to send to them. At this time we have eight military personnel we are supporting. I try to send them a package at least every two months so we can stay in touch with them on a regular basis. Your continued support is very much appreciated.

Very truly yours,Jim Taylor

Project Coordinator

Thank you for your continued support of the Box Tops for Education. I will continue collecting them throughout the summer and then for the new school year of 2010-2011.

Thank you,Carli Beveridge

MYF would like to thank the congregation for their support. With your support our team, The B.E. Lievers, exceeded our goal and raised $1123.97 to date. Contributions will still be accepted through August, see Michelle Voisine for details if you are interested. Our 13 member team included 8 Asbury Members: Michelle, Tyler and Casey Voisine, Joyce, Lenny and Nate Cannon, Colleen Smith and Rachel Floyd. Thank you all for making it a memorable event. We’re looking forward to participating next year.

Dear Asbury Seniors,

I truly enjoyed my lunch last month, and the handmade dishcloth was a real treat. Your pastor’s slides and talk on Cambodia was very interesting.

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Congratulations on fulfilling 100% of the covenant of your Shared Ministry Apportionments for 2009. In what was an extraordinarily challenging year economically, the churches of the New York Annual Conference actually increased their missional giving through the apportionments from the previous year. For 2009, 358 churches met their connectional obligation, one of the largest numbers ever. Thanks to faithful churches and leaders and pastors like you and the good stewardship of our Conference Council on Finance and Administration, our conference was able to honor our own connectional covenant with the United Methodist Church for the sixth year in a row. As always, I do not take your faithfulness for granted. I can’t. I know how hard our churches are working to meet this goal. I know the extra efforts, the extra miles you have gone. I am so grateful for and so profoundly humbled by your amazing demonstration of commitment to the mission and ministry of our church. While we all have hope for a continued recovery in the economy this year, being the church of Jesus Christ in this age continues to be a

most demanding challenge. To be very sure, it is requiring the very best from all of us in order to fulfill God’s call for such a time as this. Together, we will continue to offer our best for the sake of God’s mission of transforming the world in the name and love of Jesus Christ. Let’s not forget that those whom God calls, God also equips, and that we can do all things through the one who strengthens us. Again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your devotion to our connectional covenant and your labor in the vineyard to honor it. I pray that my ministry with you is worthy of your trust and faithfulness. Indeed it remains the greatest privilege of my life to be in ministry with the awesome people and churches of the New York Annual Conference. May God continue to richly bless and honor you, your loved ones, and your church!

With you in Christ’s Ministry,Jeremiah Park

ASBURY’S ANNUAL FALL TAG SALE

September 11th8:30 am – 2:00 pm

It’s not too early to start thinking about the Fall tag sale! It will be held in the beginning of September so you have all of July and August to clean out your homes and set aside your unwanted items for this fundraiser. Ann Morin is once again the coordinator for this event and we are so lucky to have her overseeing this project. Remember to call early if you have trouble bringing items in, and we will try to arrange a pick-up for you. (Call Ann at 584-8576.) You may begin bringing in items for the sale beginning Sunday, September 5th until noon on Friday the 10th so we can place and price everything. (No computers, tires, TV’s, or large appliances please, as these items do not sell and are hard to dispose of). AND, for a successful tag sale, we need lots of helpers beginning Wednesday morning September 8th to place and price items. Let Ann know when you are available. Don’t forget the Early Bird Special being held on Friday, September 10th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. There is a $2.00 Door Charge to attend the Early Bird Special Night.

The Summer Sunday School program needs teachers! Can you volunteer one Sunday during the Summer and help teach Asbury’s youth? Please see Pat Sallstrom or Harriet Donovan if you can help. Rally Day for the start of the Fall Sunday School classes will be Sunday, September 12th. Following the 10:00 am service there will be an All Church Potluck Picnic, and all Asbury members are encouraged to attend. Speaking of Rally Day, why wait till then to register for Sunday School? Registration forms for the 2010-2011 year are available in the Narthex or the church office. Completed forms may be returned to the church office. The Education Committee has placed a recycling bin in the downstairs hallway for all members to use. On August 29th the Education Committee will meet at the Parsonage for a Pot Luck Picnic and Recognition Day. PLEASE NOTE: There will be no Sunday School class held on July 4th

and September 5th.

The members of Ruth Circle have certainly been busy! First there was the wonderful wedding themed Mother/Daughter Banquet. Next, the members baked and sold all kinds of goodies at the Memorial Day Parade. And then they sponsored a fun evening with the

Elm City Banjo players. And a big thank you goes to Heidi Borkowski for providing the delicious pies that were served that evening. The group raised $550 from those three events that will go towards paying our apportionments. Next on the agenda is their annual progressive picnic. They have invited the members of AACT to attend this fun event which will take place on July 24th. They will begin at Carole Lishness’ house at 4:00 p.m. for appetizers, and move on to Gardner Wright’s house at 5:30 for the main course. You won’t want to miss this! If you plan on attending, please RSVP to Heidi Borkowski at [email protected]

600TH PACKAGE MAILED TO MILITARY

We recently mailed the 600th package to one of our military personnel serving overseas. This project, started by Earl Struble a few years ago continues to provide a great service to our service men and women based on the feedback we get. I want to thank all of you for your support of this project. Your contributions of food items, personal care items, writing supplies, cash, and other items allows us to continue this worthwhile project. Special thanks to the Seniors for their ongoing support and prayers. Also, thank you to everyone who made a contribution to the book of remembrance in Earl’s memory. The Memorial’s Committee

decided that there would be no better thing to support than the military care package project that Earl so loved. Those funds will go a long way to keep the project going. Based on the feedback we receive the most popular items are bar soap, powdered laundry detergent, baby wipes in plastic containers, deodorant (men’s and women’s), sunscreen, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Please keep this in mind when you decide what to contribute. Also, if it is easier for you, we will gladly accept money which can be used to buy needed supplies, pay postage to mail the packages, and cover expenses for materials such as boxes, tape, packing material, and address labels. You can put contributions in the collection plate in an envelope marked “military care packages”. Checks can be made out to Asbury UMC. Thanks again for all your support.

New Beginnings – Children’s Clothes for 1 st day of school

Asbury UMC is participating in the wonderful community outreach project called “New Beginnings”. Each summer Asbury receives a list of children’s sizes with which we shop for new clothes earmarked for the start of a new school year. The children we shop for and “adopt” are all from Bristol. If you would like to make a beautiful, very effective difference in a child’s life as they go back to school this Fall, consider

“adopting” one of our children. Please see / email Amy Majors at [email protected] with your interest to participate in this program.

Soup KitchenThank you to the Ruth Circle Committee who served a delicious meal at the Zion Lutheran Soup Kitchen on June 8th. The Finance and Stewardship Committees will be serving the next meal on July 13th and Senior Fellowship will be serving at the Soup Kitchen on August 10th. We put together bags of various items and donate them to Prudence Crandall Women’s Shelter. Please see Amy Majors with your donations.

For Your informationFrom the Committee on Finance As we move into summer, we remain in a significant budget deficit as our financial situation has changed very little in recent months. At least our fuel and utility costs lessen significantly at this time of year. Our weekly envelope offering is doing ok. Through the first Sunday of June, the total is $66,912 which is approximately $1,000 more than for the same period of last year. Projecting the rate of envelope offering to year end gives us a total of about $160,000 since the rate tends to increase somewhat near year end. However, we need approximately $186,000 to balance our Current Expense budget. Thus the probable need for our usual year end shortfall asking. Once again, please remember to keep your weekly offering up to date or paid ahead this summer. Your efforts to do this will be appreciated.

NEW YORK ANNUAL CONFERENCE(NYAC) 2010

Where do I begin? Probably where it started at Hofstra University on Long Island on Wednesday June 9 th. My ideas of what I was in store for were based on the many professional conferences I have attended over the years, and this was unlike any of them. In professional conferencing there are typically breaks where the participants tour local attractions and become familiar with local culture in the host community. Such was not part of the NYAC, but who cared? Not me! There were probably about 1,000 persons in the Hofstra basketball arena when I arrived and on either side of the altar/stage were huge jumbotron screens which came into use throughout the conference to display the words of the hymns and the numerous scriptures for the two hour Bible study Wednesday afternoon and each successive morning. The Bible studies were led by the Reverend Vance Ross, who was nothing but on fire each day, and had a semi-preaching semi-study Bible session. Everyone sat transfixed. And during every event, but more especially during the opening ceremonies that began at 7 pm on Wednesday, there was the Bishop, Rev. Jeremiah Park. Do you remember him? My first re-exposure to Asbury was in September 2005 when he was in attendance at our 150th anniversary. Known as the singing bishop, he lived up to his name that evening, as I seem to recall that we sang from time to time as he preached for a couple of hours. That September evening in 2005 reminded me of my growing years at Asbury and here I was in 2010 attending a conference with the bishop who was nothing but on fire for Jesus, as I am sure he will be the first to admit. I was very impressed with how Bishop Park kept interjecting hymns into the ceremonies throughout every activity and every event. Just as he did that night in Forestville, he’d shout, “let’s sing another hymn” and his selection fit perfectly with what was happening at particular moments. I think he has the entire hymnal memorized with an ability to recall each and every word appropriate for anything that might be going on. The jumbotrons were apparently set up so that he could call out the name and number of a hymn and the words would immediately appear on the screens. Remember, these were in addition to what were in the printed programs. Of course there was an organ. The opening service Wednesday evening went from 7 pm until 10 pm and then we started on Thursday at 6:15 with communion. Many things were optional like the 6:15 am communion service, but it was well attended and by intinction (you remember, you get the bread and dip it in the cup?). Off to breakfast after that at 7 am, Bible study at 8:30 that lasts until lunch. Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon were the legislative sessions. These were rather serious. No hymns, but the business of the church was interesting and handled in a very business-like atmosphere. I had a vote, so I hope I represented the interests of our church in a manner you would find acceptable. The ordination service was on Friday evening and was probably the highlight of the conference. While there was the laying on of hands and the blessing of the numerous Elders, the Commissionings, the Recognition of Local Pastors, the highlight was the preaching of the Southern African-American Bishop James E. Swanson, Sr., who brought the house to its feet several times. I thought we were at an old-time revival meeting. I guess there were about 1,200 to 1,500 persons in the arena for the ordination. After that event, I skipped communion on Saturday morning, but I had to check out of my room anyway, but I still managed to get to breakfast by 7 am. I did have breakfast with Pastor Laura who got locked out of her room, and her building was evacuated due to a fire alarm prior to breakfast on that morning which seemed to be a theme for her week. I was surprised at how little time we actually spent together. I spent most of my time with the other lay members, and I must have made 100 or so new friends, but I will never remember all of their names. I guess I will need to go back to see them again next year. I cannot close this without explaining what happened on Saturday. There were about 5,000 Methodists in the arena for the afternoon festivities, many arriving by bus from all over New York, Connecticut and Long Island. 12 disciples from Asbury were among these. Outside the arena were mission tents that were set up to display the missions of the UMC all over the world. The Biloxi mission teams were well represented. During my absence from Asbury that lasted from about 1984 until 2005, I was not un-churched as they say, but I was seeking God and love as has been my nature all my life. I attended Catholic masses, was a member of a cult-like fundamentalist church who told me they had all the truth (it turns out they didn’t). Bishop Park stated that we in the NYAC will grow the church of Jesus Christ by our joy. When the true love that comes only from our great creator hits you, you will know it. I walked into Asbury in 2005 and it hit me. I have kept coming back. First, just the worship services, then a worship leader. Then Chair of Trustees and Chancel Choir. It was good to go to conference. I did so appreciate it and I would love to go again.

Respectfully submitted,
