The subject for this month is the food your dog eats and how it can be

used to train him.The single most important training exercise

you can do is to always PICK UP the food bowl when your dog finishes his food or after 10 minutes, whichever is sooner. If you leave the food bowl down all the time, your dog forgets that you supply the food. He starts to think he doesn’t need you for anything and may start getting “too big for his britches”. I’ve seen dogs that potty all over the house because they have no respect for their owner. If a dog lifts his leg on the couch or the drapes, that’s not a potty training issue, that’s definitely a dominance issue. The dogs don’t need their people because their food is right there whenever they want it. Even if the bowl looks empty, pick it up. There may be one morsel of food left and the dog still thinks the food is right there whenever he wants it. Whoever controls the food is boss… it’s that simple! Forget about going through the doorway before you dog, feeding yourself before feeding the dog, or any other rules you read about how to assert your dominance. It really IS all about the food.

You should feed your dog twice a day. If your dog didn’t feel like eating and skips a meal, it would be only 24 hours between meals instead of 48 hours. Also, dogs love rituals, especially their feeding ritual. And, it gives you twice as many opportunities to train him.

Speak! IT’S All AbouT THE fooD!by Carol Pitlock

After you prepare your dog’s food, tell him to SIT, then say STAY. You then lower the bowl to the floor. If he gets up, quickly raise the bowl up and say SIT again. When the bowl is on the floor and you stand up, say OK to release him. His reward for good behavior is his food. Your dog should work for everything except water.

Once your dog really knows SIT, it can be quite useful. If he starts to jump up on you, quickly move aside and say SIT. He should then fall into a sit. When he does, immediately praise him with GOOD SIT. The bad jump has turned into a good sit!

I tell my dog to SIT and STAY when I am putting a leash on his collar. If he gets up, I stop and hold the leash up until he SITs again. If he gets up repeatedly, I put away the leash and start over again.

Some trainers say that you should feed your dog on a regular schedule and many people go to extremes to keep to the schedule. My life always seems to get in the way of doing that. My dogs have never suffered any ill effects from irregular feeding schedules. One of the benefits is that they don’t wake me up early on the weekends to get breakfast.

If you have a young child that your dog may treat like a littermate (playing too rough, nipping, etc.), you prepare the food bowl then give it to your child and have him put it down for the dog. That shows the dog that the child is dominant over him. You should do the SIT and STAY commands and pick up the bowl after he eats. This works for anyone in the house that the dog thinks he outranks (including spouses).

If your dog does not get along well with another pet in your home, you can use mealtime to help defuse the situation. For example, if the dog does not get along with the cat, take a hand towel and rub it over the cat to pick up her scent. Use the towel as a placemat for your dog’s food bowl. He will start to associate the cat with the pleasant experience of eating his food. You can make a “placemat” for the cat as well.

Dear residents, this is a letter that was submitted that I just couldn’t pass up. This will warm your heart as you read it:

Dear Mr. Unsicker,I wanted to write this letter today to tell you about a remarkable

student at Rosehill Christian School. Kaitlyn Burke did something this weekend that will forever touch our family. Kaitlyn is a senior this year (and co-captain of the cheerleaders) so every last game, last class, last Sadie Hawkins dance, last Homecoming are all going to be precious memories for her. With that in mind, a date to Sadie Hawkins is someone with which you would want to have an amazing time. Because she is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside, she chose to ask our son Joshua. This is not a great choice from a worldly perspective. Joshua is a 16 year old with autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, water on his brain, and extreme speech delay. Joshua has really good days, but he also can have times where he has “melt downs” and not always is easy to handle or fun to be around. Looking from the outside you would ask, “Why would this beautiful girl give up her dance to take a chance on not having the night of her dreams?”

Kaitlyn took Joshua and not only gave Joshua some of the sweetest memories, but gave Lonnie and me something we never thought would happen. We had the joy of getting our only son ready to go to a dance, and experience a night he normally would not have experienced.

Kaitlyn Burke has such a servant’s heart. She truly models Jesus in her actions, thoughts, and speech. We feel so blessed and honored that she is in our lives. I wanted to write you to let you know what this remarkable young lady did.

The amazing thing is she thanked us for letting her take Joshua to the dance. She is someone I know Rosehill Christian School is proud to have among the student body. I have included a picture of Joshua and his date. I understand that he had a wonderful time.-Thank You, Beth Wright

Kaitlyn, is the daughter of Kevin and Bertha Burke. She is following her older sister, Kristen, by also graduating from Rosehill Christian School. The Burkes have a son, Kraig who is currently a 9th grader at Rosehill Christian School. Lonnie and Beth Wright have three children: Joshua, Jaycee, and Jessica. Their two girls

attend Rosehill Christian School, in Tomball, TX.

Families from all over the Houston area are opening up their homes and lives to foreign exchange students through the EF Foundation for Foreign Study.

EF Foundation is a leader in high school foreign exchange, bringing more students to the United States than any other exchange program. A nonprofit committed to promoting global awareness for over 30 years; EF Foundation leverages a committed network of local coordinators to connect thousands of students with caring American families each year.

EF exchange students come from more than 30 countries around the world and are between the ages of 15 and 18. The majority of students stay for a full high school year. In the past, exchange students have come to live in Texas from as far away as Germany, Hong Kong, Australia and Norway, to name a few.

I am an International Exchange Coordinator for EF Foundation. I will be working with the community to secure host families for a number of students this year.

In order to raise awareness of this life-changing opportunity, we need the community to see local narratives of the wonderful families and students who have had unforgettable experiences through the program.
