Te Awamutu Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed a nasty incident in Alexandra Street yesterday afternoon.
At about 3pm an 82-year-old man was almost hit on the pe-destrian crossing near Heath-cote Appliances.
The driver of the car got out, followed the man and abused and threatened him. A passenger dragged the man back to the car.
Anyone who saw the car, espe-cially the registration is asked to contact police (872 0100).
Welcome homeA special homecoming cele-
bration has been arranged for Te Awamutu’s Nic Jordan, winner of the Australian Formula 3 trophy class championship.
Bring your banners, balloons etc to Hamilton Airport at 4pm on Saturday.
“Join in the fun. It’ll be wild,” says Michelle Jordan, Nic’s mother.
Arts support? Te Awamutu has a strong
presence in the arts with groups active in areas from print making to theatre.
But does it need help linking these groups, creating a data-base or is there perhaps a need for a multi-use arts centre?
The Waipa Arts Council is keen to fi nd answers to these sorts of questions and see if there is a need for a more active body to support the local arts scene.
Feedback would be welcome, send to: Arts Council, PO Box 116, Te Awamutu.
Think ‘pink’Breast Cancer Awareness
month begins tomorrow, with buildings throughout the country being lit up in pink.
Also look out for pink ribbons being sold through a number of outlets to benefi t the work of the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Cut shortIt isn’t often Councillor James
Parlane is short of words, but he was in Tuesday’s edition of the Courier.
The last sentence of the summary of his presentation to Grey Power should have read... “Their (Council’s) (legal) actions against me are a direct result of the way I have caught them out.”
Te Awamutu’s Murray Swetman has won the inaugural Progressive Enterprises’ Bakery Apprentice of the Year award.
The 32-year-old is a Bakery Manager at Woolworths Super-market.
Mr Swetman has been at the store for three years and has a team of three full time and four part time bakers and packers.
He has been baking for 15 years, but only took the opportunity to undertake his apprenticeship once he had moved to Te Awamutu.
Mr Swetman says while he was a late starter as far as his training was concerned, he has been bak-ing all his adult life.
Part of his role is the develop-ment of new products to suit cus-tomers’ needs.
He says all breads and cakes are baked on site daily, and new prod-uct, such as gluten free and yeast free breads are being developed. Next month gluten free cakes will be added to the range.
It is the fi rst year of the new in-ternal award, created by national grocery chain Progressive En-terprises to acknowledge success within the business.
They operate an apprentice programme across all its Food-town, Woolworths and Countdown brands and currently employ 93 bakery apprentices.
There were 17 nominees for the award and fi ve other fi nalists
from Woolworths and Countdown stores in Dunedin, Johnsonville, Palmerston North (2) and Papa-moa.
To be eligible to enter the com-petition, apprentices needed to complete their National Certifi -cate in Baking between February 2003 and July 2004. The National Certifi cate in Baking is achieved
through on the job training, by distance learning and in the class-room. The progress of all appren-tices is also closely monitored.
The National Certifi cate in Bak-ing aids Progressive Enterprises in maintaining a high standard of staff because they believe that quality service and products be-gins with quality training.
“Murray was chosen because he demonstrated excellence in practical baking skills, work place attitude, baking knowledge and merchandising and customer service skills. He has been award-ed with an outward bound course for his achievement,” says Richard Umbers, Progressive Enterprises chief operating offi cer.

Te Awamutu Police would like to hear from anyone who can shed light on the dissappear-ance of the Te Mawhai WWI Honours Board from the Te Mawhai Hall.
The missing board is one of three honouring war casualties and veterans from the district.
Members of the hall commit-tee reported the board mssing recently, but cannot pinpoint when it dissappeared.
The board contains many prominent family names.
Hall committee members say it would have taken some effort to remove the roll of honour, which was screwed to the wall of the supper room.
They say it is dissappointing someone would have such little regard for those who gave their lives for this country.
Anyone who has information that could assist police is asked to call Te Awamutu Police in confi dence (872 0100).

Voters urged to read instructions
Voters in local elections are being reminded to carefully read the instructions on their voting papers before exer-cising their democratic right.
Department of Internal Affairs spokesperson Julia Na-pier says with the majority of people using both Single Transferable Vote and First Past the Post, it is impor-tant they look carefully to see which voting system they should use for each voting paper.
“We’re confi dent that voters who read their ballot pa-per carefully will make their vote count. With STV, peo-ple rank their preferences using numbers and with FPP, they use ticks to indicate their support.”
It is important people take the time to read their vot-ing papers carefully because voting is at the heart of our democratic system, she says.
“With many people still to cast their vote, it is impor-tant they take the time to ensure they are using the right voting system.”
“STV is really easy to use. The important thing to re-member is that with STV people use numbers to rank the candidates. So you write the number ‘1’ next to the candidate you most want elected, a ‘2’ next to your second choice, and so on.
“People can rank as few or as many candidates as they want. They just need to make sure the numbers are in sequence – 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on,” she says.

SSAAFFEESSHHOOMMEE YOUR LETTERS
Sir, enough is enough! The cra-zy situation of heavy transport going through the retail area of Te Awamutu, namely Alexandra Street from the old Post Offi ce roundabout to the Mutu Street/Rewi Street roundabout must stop.
Every hour of the day huge trailer trucks carrying milk, stock, fertiliser, logs, petrol, chem-icals etc, noisily pass through this area.
All this plus the possibility of a major disaster one day. Hopefully
new councillors will make this an urgent issue.
I suggest either traffi c lights with green fi lter arrows at the dangerous George Street, Ara-wata and Mahoe Street junction or a roundabout, for traffi c to divert down Mahoe Street to Mutu Street, another rounda-bout and then the roundabout at Alexandra Street, then onto the railway area where most heavy traffi c is heading.

Thanks for helping fi nd dog
Through this column, we would like to thank the people of Pirongia who helped in looking for our lost elderly Border Collie bitch, Zephyr. Kids on holiday went searching, others scoured the streets.
She was found at the back of the school - heaven knows how she crossed Franklin Street without being bowled - guardian angels maybe?
So thank you again, especially to our friend Jill Sutton who saw her and picked her up in her non-doggy car and brought her safely back to us.

Successful arthritis appeal
May I, through your paper, thank Mike Van der Hoeven of Magill’s Butchery for the generous donation of sausages for the sausage sizzle we held last Friday outside the ANZ Bank for the start of the Arthritis Orange Appeal Week.
Magill’s Butchery are always being approached for help from many organisa-tions and, to my knowledge, have never refused anyone. They deserve a special award for generosity to this town.
I also would like to thank the ANZ Bank, Paper Plus and Harcourts for their sup-port of our small group who manned the stall and sausage sizzle.
To the men of Pakeke Lions, a big thank you, you were wonderful giving your time, energy and humour to help with the sau-sage sizzle, was very much appreciated.
And fi nally, I’d like to thank the people of Te Awamutu who supported the Arthritis New Zealand Appeal.
The raffl e was won by M. Clark, and the grand total of $557 was collected for your efforts. Well done. Thank you again.

Sewage plants behind on compliance
Sewage plants have the most diffi culty complying with consent conditions, this month’s Environment Waikato Regulatory Committee heard.
The Council conducted an audit of priority sites in the Region for the past year and found nearly two thirds of Priority One sites had a high level of compliance or better Resource Use programme manager David Stagg said. Nearly all signifi cant non compliance at Priority One sites was from the utility sector, particularly district sewage plants.
Around the Region, 57 sites were regarded as Priority One status primarily because of their po-tential to cause signifi cant environmental effects, the extent of their activities or a history of non compliance.
Energy, forestry and mineral sectors - a quarter of the Priority One sites - had all achieved a high level of compliance or better. A high level was achieved by 74 percent of industrial sector sites and only fi ve percent were in signifi cant non compliance.
Nearly one third of all the sewage plants audited had signifi cant non-compliance.
Where signifi cant non compliance had been recorded there had been some form of regulatory action taken and courses of action to comply in the future had been agreed.
“It is recognised that upgrades to sewage plants can be both diffi cult and expensive,” he said.
It could take several years for some wastewater treatment plants to achieve compliance due to budgeting, design and community consultation needs.
Utility providers needed to be encouraged to con-tinue planning for industry and population growth in their areas and ensure adequate resourcing was provided to cope with infrastructural requirements in the future, he said.
Of Priority Two and Three sites – those with moderate environmental effects - most had a high level of compliance and only up to fi ve percent had signifi cant non compliance.
Cr Jenni Vernon said the Council needed to work closely with district councils to ensure they recog-nised the importance of complying.

High standards set in vocal
Local competitor Sydney Crocker added two more trophies to her growing collection at this year’s Te Awamutu Competitions Festival.
She won the Charsley Cup for the Most Promising Waikato Competitor and the Rebecca Lockyer Trophy (10 and under 12, modern- jazz).
Adjudicator Reiss Jenkin-son spent six days watching the three dance criteria and was very pleased with the overall standard.
He was particularly im-pressed with the numbers in the younger age groups, which he feels augurs well for the future.
Special highlights of the tap section were the Cham-ber of Commerce Tap Cham-pionship and the Rotary Championship.
A contingent of dancers from Wellington and the Hutt enjoyed success in the Modern and Tap Dancing.

The rain might have dampened spirits out-side, but inside the Pekerau School Hall there was action aplenty with the skirl of the bagpipes and the tartans of the kilts twirling to the jigs and reels of the Highlands.
Convenor Lyn McCorquindale, a local High-land and National Dance teacher, had her extended family including her mother, sisters and friends assisting her to stage the successful Highland and National Dance Section of the Te Awamutu Festival.
Several local dancers competed including the president’s daughter Laura and fi rst time danc-er, Jennifer Sinclair (grandaughter of long-time committee member and past secretary Nan Sinclair), as well as new Te Awamutu resident Claudia Maynard.

Former local dance competitor Jennifer Simkin (nee Harker) brought her daughter back to Te Awamutu to scoop the pool in ballet, picking up a trophy named after her mother along the way.
Alexandra Simkin (12) won the Senior Scholar-ship, Duchesne Trophy for most versatile dancer, Ellis Walton Cup over four disciplines and the Jen-nifer Harker Trophy for Classical Ballet.
Adjudicator Reiss Jenkinson says she is a tal-ented young dancer and shows the work ethic and ability to go a long way.
“She will be one to watch in the very near fu-ture.” Coming from a supportive dancing family, Alexandra excels not only in ballet, but jazz and contemporary dance as well.

WHAT’S ON FOR OCTOBER
Donations neededCambridge Rotary Club is holding their Booka-
rama in two weeks time. A major fundraising effort, the book fair has
grown enormously in popularity over the eight years it has been running.
As well as being keenly supported from within the waikato, people come from as far away as Auck-land, Tauranga and Taupo to hunt out a bargain.
From opening for just a few hours in the fi rst year, this year’s Bookarama will last four days, from Thursday, October 14 until Sunday, October 17.
All proceeds are donated to worthy organisations and needy causes, such as fl ood victim relief and also individual cases. Last year the Bookarama raised more than $15,000.
To raise these funds the club needs the public’s help. Donations of books, videos, tapes, LP’s, and CD’s are all welcome right now, though people coming to the sale in the Cambridge Town Hall can bring them on the day.
Donations can be made by contacting organiser Gordon Knight (07) 827 3318.

Not just older ages affected by arthritis
Sarah Griffi n and her dog Jordie were once familiar faces on many local streets as they walked long distances around town.
But three years ago Sarah began to fi nd walking more diffi cult and developed a rash on her face.
It was the telltale rash that gave the vital clue to her problem.
Sarah has ‘lupus’ a form of arthritis that can affect joints, muscles and other parts of the body.
It is one of the auto-immune rheumatic diseases - in sufferers antibodies are pro-duced, which act against certain body tis-sues and cause infl ammation.
Sarah has systemic lupus, which in-volves the joints and sometimes internal organs. She was diagnosed with arthritis at just 22.
Around 10 times more females than males develop lupus and it is usually diag-nosed in the child-bearing years.
Lupus usually starts with joint pain, while fatigue is one of the most common and one of the most prominent features of lupus.
Sarah’s father Morris says she deterio-rated quickly in the initial stages.
“She had the rash and aching joints, her energy disappeared quickly and her blood pressure got higher.
“While lupus cannot be cured, the symp-toms can be treated as they appear and medication has meant she has it under control now.”
Sarah continues to see a rheumatoid specialist in Hamilton and has daily medi-cation to take, but otherwise can do most of the things she enjoys.
She is one of around one million New Zealanders who suffer from some form of arthritis - there are actually more than 140 forms of the condition. Those affected are all ages - from children to elderly.
Arthritis New Zealand provides infor-mation, education, support, public aware-ness and funding for research.
To fi nd out more about arthritis phone the Arthritis New Zealand freephone - 0800 663 463.
SARAH Griffin and her walking companion Jordie are still familiar faces on Kihikihi Road, but they don’t cover the same distances anymore. A form of arthritis has made walking more difficult for Sarah. 247047AD

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) has introduced plans to im-prove the motor industry’s image. Members must now meet strict standards which will strengthen consumer confi dence.
“The motor indus-try has not always enjoyed the best reputation. I believe it’s a case of a few bad apples spoiling the barrel,” says CEO Stephen Matthews.
“MTA’s new stand-ards will ensure that we have no sharks or cowboys.”
MTA currently has over 5,300 members, representing every area of the motor industry, including
service stations, repairers and vehicle sales. In order to join, or remain with MTA, members must pass an assessment, those who do not meet the standards will not
belong to the associa-tion.
“MTA has always represented the top end of the industry,” says Stephen Mat-thews. “But now we have a unique platform to promote our members from. We can confi dently
position them as trustworthy and professional – the best in the busi-ness!”
The new standards are also
supported by the MTA Customer Promise, which ensures members work ethically, stand by their work and vehicles and provide superior service. The promise also provides a free warranty on all vehicles sold or repaired by MTA members, including a free 80 point vehicle check, on request, on all used vehicles sold. MTA also operates a free, independent mediation service just in case any problems do arise.
MTA decided the best way to signal the new focus was to up-date it’s image and launched their new logo today. The motoring pub-lic can now look for the new MTA logo as a sign of reliability and assurance.
No sharks, or cowboys

Grant Unwin and qualified TradesmanBrent McGuire repairing a damaged2003 Toyota Hilux.
Glimpse of the new VZThey say its ready, Holden’s all new Alloytec V6
that is. But there is more to the new Commodore VZ than the new engine.
The new range has landed, and will be seen on our roads within a couple of weeks.
Holden is describing the changes it has made to its updated Commodore VZ range as the most substantial since the introduction of the VT model in 1997.
The revised line-up will carry Holden through to the 2006 launch of its all-new Com-modore and Statesman. Holden has spent about $200 million on the devel-opment and re-tooling programme.
The new-look Commodore VZ,
New Zealand and Australia’s best-selling car for the past few years, gets a recycled front end with a sep-arate radiator mesh grille for each model, a more aggressive bonnet profi le, changed front and rear bumpers, and changed headlights and tail-lights.
The interior also gets upgrades.Electronic gizmos in the VZ and Statesman WL
have also been heavily upgraded. There is a stability control system, corner brak-
ing control, new traction control unit, improved anti-lock brakes with brake-force distribution and braking assist on some models.
A new electron-ic throttle has also been adopted.
Suspens ions across the range have been re-worked for better handling and ride.
That engine: Alloytec is part of a family of global six-cylinder engines for the GM network and replaces the 3.8-litre Ecotec V6. The Al-loytec comes with quad camshafts, four valves a cylinder, and variable valve timing. Two variants will go into the Commodore VZ.
The entry-level V6, called the Alloytec175, produces 175kW at 6000rpm and 320Nm at 2800rpm. The Alloytec190 develops 190kW at 6500rpm and 340Nm at 3200rpm. The engines
are mated to manual and automatic transmis-sions.
The four-speed automatic box has been retained on some VZ models, notably the sta-tion wagons, although Holden says it has been revised for improved fuel economy, but it is the new fi ve-speed automatic which, mated to the Alloytec190 engine in particular, gives the Com-modore all-new performance characteristics. So does the new six-speed manual gearbox.

By Dean TaylorIn 2000 Toyota re-
leased its mid-sized lifestyle vehicle in Japan to almost immediate suc-cess.
For a shade under $20,000 TASS Motors has an example of the Toyota Opa.
Available only as a second hand import in New Zealand, the Opa packs a lot of punch into its smallish package.
For a start the design is quite innovative, al-though it has shades of the Avensis in its make-up.
The front is quite boxy and aggressive, it sits nicely on mag wheels and features the rear sloping tail that now fea-tures on many modern wagons.
The Opa features the same two litre VVTi (variable valve timing - injected) engine that
the Avensis uses, but it is mated to Toyota’s fi rst continuously variable transmission.
The transmission can be locked into a low ratio and there are also set-tings for use in diffi cult
driving conditions, such as snow.
The D-4 engine (four direct injectors) devel-ops a highly respect-able 110kW of power at 5700rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4000rpm, so the mid-sized Opa gets along very nicely.
Standard interior features include two air-bags, CD stereo, air conditioning and a pretty easy to use centre dig-ital console which shows fuel, speed, rpm and odometer.
Extra space is created in the front by utilising a column gear shift and foot pedal parking brake.
Every available spare
space is turned into a storage area.
The Opa is a comforta-ble four seater, and not a bad fi ve seater, with still a bit of luggage space to spare.
Naturally rear seats fold into a variety of transformations for differ-ent luggage/passenger confi gurations.
Unlike some small and mid-sized Japanese imports, the Opa has good sized front seats and plenty of head and leg room.
The long front cabin gives good frontal visibil-ity, although I always fi nd a bit of a blind spot on the driver’s side.
Opa style acquired taste

The Land Transport Safety Authority’s latest survey of safety belt use in New Zealand shows 94% of us now buckle up in the front seat - the highest level of compliance ever recorded.
The proportion of those not buckling up in the front seat has been cut in half over the past decade - from 12% in 1994 to 6% this year.
Director of Land Transport Safety David Wright said while 94% might seem like an impres-sive fi gure, the fact that anyone would still deliberately choose not to wear a seatbelt defi ed logic.
“Anyone with even an ounce of common sense will by now real-ise that the most important thing they can do to protect themselves in a crash is to put on their safety belt every time they get in the car,” Mr Wright said.
“There are some 2.85 million licensed drivers in New Zealand. With six percent of them not buckling up, that’s still 170,000 people who are so stubborn that they refuse to take even the most basic step to protect themselves. What is it going to take to con-vince this lot that they are putting their lives on the line for no good reason? Do they lack the instinct of self-preservation?”
Police crash reports show that 94 unrestrained vehicle oc-cupants died in crashes on New Zealand roads last year. Police attending the crashes estimate at least 41 of these people would have survived had they buckled up.
The 2004 survey also revealed that men are twice as likely as
women to put themselves at risk unnecessarily, with eight percent of males not wearing safety belts in the front seat, compared to just four percent of females.
Regionally, Auckland, Nelson-Marlborough and Southland led the way this year in front seat safety belt use, each recording 96% wearing rates. The greatest improvement from 2003 was re-corded in Manawatu-Wanganui, up from 88% to 92%.
Waitakere City recorded the highest wearing rate of any metropolitan area, at 98% - up six percent from 2003, and the greatest improvement of any city from last year.
The sample size and the number of sites used for the front seatbelt survey was increased signifi cantly last year, allowing results for individual territorial local authorities to be included. Wearing rates varied consider-ably among the 71 local authori-ties surveyed this year, from 100 percent in Rodney to just 81% in Tararua.
Rear seat safety belt wearing rates are lower than front seat rates, with 19% of back seat passengers unrestrained in the LTSA’s 2003 survey. Results of the 2004 survey of rear seatbelt use will be released in February next year.
Seatbelt use up to 94%

It’s been a busy week for everyone at Freeman Court.
As well as competing in the Resthome Olympics yesterday they have been frantically work-ing towards the annual gala day on Saturday, as well as an open day at Mystery Creek on October 16.
Members of the Freeman Court craft group have been preparing items for months in readiness for the gala day.
The group uses a range of hand-crafts and loads of clever ideas to create a range of items for sale.
The process of creating goods also provides them with plenty of inter-esting activities.
Diversional therapist Erin Lyford says she is always on the lookout for ideas the group can use, while donat-ed materials are always welcomed.
Articles created this year include knitted toys, dolls and clothes, as well as preserves, cushions, mats, plastic bag holders, bath cleaners, casserole carriers, soaps, blankets, and toys.
Beautifully bottled jams, chut-neys, pickles and sauces are sure to be popular sale items, along with baking, plants, produce and bric-a-brac.
Gift baskets can be created using a number of the bottled speci-alities, these also prove popular as Christmas gifts.
Mrs Lyford says the gala day is always well patronised, with many people arriving early.
Proceeds from the day go towards purchasing items needed for the home.
In the past valuable additions have included a television set, water cooler, a stove, wheelchairs and a pool table.
A sausage sizzle will also operate at the gala and a bumper grocery raffle will be sold.
The gala day begins at 10am on Saturday and will run until around 1pm.
For further details about the event contact Freeman Court (ph 871 5260).

Reihana returninghome
What a mouth-watering prospect - former All Black Bruce Reihana joining Sereni Sivivatu in the Te Awamutu Sports backline next year.
That appears likely after the game-breaking Reihana signed up with the New Zealand Rugby Union until at least the end of 2007 this week.
Long-serving Te Awamutu Sports Senior A player Paul Wheeler said Reihana had visited the club earlier this year and indicated he would be re-joining his hometown club on his return to New Zealand.
That’s great news for the local rugby fraternity, hot-on-the-heels of Sivivatu and All Black Jono Gibbes joining Te Awamutu Sports Club this season.
Steven Bates, arguably the best number-eight in this season’s NPC, is now an established Te Awamutu Sports man.
Add the likes of Sam Griffi n, Waylon Tangohau, Luke Parsons, Nathan White, Jamie Muir and Wheeler (all Waikato representatives) into the mix and Te Awamutu Sports must be the envy of all other clubs in the Waikato right now.
Sadly, because of Chiefs and All Blacks commit-ments, chances of them all playing for the club at any one time are virtually nil.
But Te Awamutu Sports club manager, Keith Parsons says they will add a lot of value when they’re able to attend trainings.
“We’re thrilled to have one of our favourite sons (Reihana) coming back home.
“He still has plenty to offer to Te Awamutu, Waikato and New Zealand rugby.”
One of the players singled out by All Blacks coach Graham Henry for his qualities, Reihana will return to New Zealand when his contract with English club Northampton expires next year.
“I am looking forward to getting back into rug-by in New Zealand,” says Reihana, who turned down a highly lucrative contract offer to remain in Europe.
“I have really enjoyed the competition here in the UK and the experience it has given me.
“But I am a very proud New Zealander, and the opportunity to re-join some of my old provincial and Super 12 team-mates, along with the pos-sibility of playing in an All Blacks jersey again, was too hard to resist.”
Reihana was last season named the Profes-sional Rugby Association’s Players’ Player of the Year.
He played on the left wing for the All Blacks in tests against France and Italy on the 2000 end-of-season tour, scoring two tries against Italy.
The 28-year-old has played 81 games for Waikato and scored 385 points.
Despite former Waikato halfback Issac Boss do-ing an admirable job as fi ll-in fullback for the in-jured Todd Miller, Reihana looks certain to claim the No 15 jersey in next year’s NPC.
“We’re thrilled to be able to get someone of Bruce’s ilk,” says Waikato Rugby Union spokes-man Pat Mellsop.
“He’s a true Mooloo, so to get him back, es-pecially when other unions were after him, is special.”
Pirongia Gun Club fi ring up again
Pirongia Gun Club is urging all members and prospective members to participate in an open shoot on Sunday.
The once thriving organisation, situated on the Pirongia-Kawhia road, is making every endeav-our to resurrect a club that has produced many provincial and national champions.
For further details see advert in classifi ed sec-tion.
Farrell takes wind out of rivals sails
Chappy Farrell won the hotly contested non-spinnaker section of the annual trailer yacht regatta at Lake Ngaroto.
First placings were shared between four yachts.
Farrell, sailing his Joker 6.7 took fi rst place with two fi rsts and three second placings.
Murray Wall, in a Sabre 22, had two fi rsts, a second a third and a fourth.
Third place went to Owen Johnston, also in a Joker 6.7, on a countback.
The spinnaker fl eet was headed by Tony Pul-man (Rotorua), sailing an Elliott 5.9, from Ian Horner (New Plymouth), in a Ross 780.
The two visitors featured in an intense battle - Pulman prevailing with four fi rsts and a second to Poolman’s two fi rsts and three seconds.
The fi rst local yacht was Southbound, sailed by Gordon Wallis, in fourth spot.

Nick Read showed his class winning Te Awamutu Sports Cy-cling Club’s 36km race over a wet and windy Puahue-Chamberlain-Long Road circuit.
Read, along with fel-
low fi ve minute handi-cappers Errol New-lands, Arthur Ferguson and Don Buchanan, rode through the fi eld to take line honours.
Richard Mellsop re-ports that the quartet
worked well as a team, sharing the lead into the wind.
They caught the bunch in front within 15km.
With 10km to go, the chasing scratch riders were only a 1½ minutes behind and seemingly heading for the win.
But under-17 rider Read played the per-fect waiting game, in the slight up-hill fi n-ish, to take the race from Buchanan, Wil-liamson, Newlands and Ferguson.
Jordan Newlands fi n-
ished 45 seconds later in the fastest time of 1:10:17.
Ride of the day would have go to 13-year-old Laura Ashley.
She turned up think-ing she only had to race 12km but ended up racing 36km. She fi n-ished only fi ve minutes behind the winners.
Results, with handicap time in parenthesis: N Read (5 min-utes)) 1:14:24, 1; D Buchanan (5) 1:14:24, 2; J Williamson (10) 1:19:24, 3; E Newlands (5) 1:14:24, 4; A Ferguson (5m) 1:14:32, 5; J Newlands (scr) 1:10:17 (fastest time) 6; T O’Carroll (15) 1:15:39, 7; L Ashley (15) 1:30:21, 8; S Ross (10) 1:27:54, 9; W Strong (10) 1:28:01, 10.
Road win for young Read
Bring on the best in the CommonwealthToms bouyed by retaining his national boxing title
Steven Toms showed great courage and de-termination to retain his under-75kg mid-dleweight boxing title in Invercargill.
The Te Awamutu 17-year-old injured his left elbow in round two of his fi rst bout against Bryce Henley of Can-terbury.
Despite being re-stricted to throwing only right handers, Toms advanced to the fi nal with a 21-16 vic-tory.
He says the elbow was still painful going into the fi nal against Zane Whalley of Te Awamutu, but once the match got underway the addrenalin kicked in.
The pain went and his concentration was soley focused on win-ning gold.
Toms was always in charge.
He claimed victory in round two when the referee stopped
the fi ght after Toms had built a 15 point advantage.
It was just the fi llip the New Zealand rep-
resentative needed.His next major as-
signment is the Com-monwealth Youth Games in Bendigo,
Australia, from Novem-ber 29 to December 4.
He was sponsored to Invercargill by Te Awamutu RSA.

Shilton digs deep for victoryBrad Shilton’s greater expe-
rienced paved the way for a 3/2 win over Shane Gillespie in Te Awamutu Golf Club’s senior men’s championship.
The New Zealand representa-tive was 4-up after 18 holes.
Gillespie improved his posi-tion in the early stages of the second round.
Shilton needed to call on all his experience to get him home on the 34th hole.
Fred Matenga made no race of it in the intermediate fi nal, winning 12/10 over Robert Wetere.
Colin Green reports that Matenga played very steady golf throughout the match.
The junior title was won in equally emphatic fashion by left-hander Trevor Wolfsbauer over Robert Coleman, 12/10.
They were all square after
nine holes before Wolfsbauer took charge.
The junior B fi nal was won by Dave Morgan on the 18th against Welby Murrell.
History was created when Wayne Taitoko beat Keith Nor-ris 6/5 in the senior Parker plate.
Taitoko’s father, Wally, won the plate in 1968, as did his grandfather, Tom Maniapoto, in 1962.
The intermediate Parker plate was won by Robin Thomp-son with a 2/1 win over Paul Brownlie.
Anthony Western annexed the junior Parker plate beating Noel Gillespie on the 19th.
The Kihikihi Crate fi nal also went into overtime, with Her-man Oosterman fi nally prevail-ing over Les Hagenson at the 20th.
Midweek winners were Brad Shilton (69 gross), Dave Herlihy (65 net), Trevor Wolfsbauer (40 stableford) and Pam Pennell (71 net).
John Neilson was best of the Vets with 38 points, while Wil-liam Wetere headed the Satur-day scramble with 39.
Alexander topsMargaret Alexander headed
the division one scramble with a score of two down on par at Stewart Alexander Golf Club.
Hetti Berg was four down, one ahead of Pam Grylls and Bev Roigard.
Division two was won by Sylvia Woodward with three down, from Joy Allen, Sherrill Lawrence and Ann Crichton on four down.
LGU winners were Cheryl Forster, Berg and Woodward.

Eyre dream comes true at Pirongia
Martin Eyre fulfi lled a dream winning an epic fi nal to the sen-ior men’s matchplay champion-ship at Pirongia Golf Club.
The Eyre brothers, Martin and Philip, have been trying 25 years to get their family name on the senior honours board.
“We’ve always lived just across the river from the 15th tee and would dream of the day when one of us would be club cham-pion.”
Despite playing in persistent light rain, Eyre and Tynne Watts featured in an outstanding en-counter, with Eyre winning on the 36th hole.
Eyre made a mockery of his underdog tag, being 6-up after 18 holes, having shot a par equalling 72.
Watts won the 19th, only to see Eyre win the 21st, 22nd and 23rd holes to be 8-up with 13 holes to play.
The 24th saw the beginning of a comeback by Watts. He won fi ve of the next seven holes, with four birdies and a par, to reduce the defi cit to three holes with six left to play.
Eyre struck back on the 31st with a superb tee shot, to within half a metre of the pin, for a birdie.
Watts won the next two holes, with pars, to be only two down with three to play.
Eyre made a mighty hole-sav-ing chip for a par three on the 34th to make the match dormie.
But the never say die Watts won the 35th with a par.
He then needed to birdie the last hole, to send the match into a sudden-death playoff, after Eyre found the green in two.
It was not to be - Watts’ gal-lant fi ght back ended when his
six metre birdie putt slid past the hole.
Eyre completed the formality, tapping in for a par to seal his victory.
It was 20 years to the day that Eyre last made the senior fi nal.
He recalls shooting 71 to be 1-up after 18 holes on that oc-casion, but something in the water, during the lunchbreak, did not agree with him and his form fell away had to settle for runner-up.
The intermediate title was won in convincing fashion by Simon Mills.
His match with Cedric Tainui was closely fought initially, with Mills 1-up after nine holes and 3-up after 18.
Mills forged ahead with an-other fi ve wins in the fi rst 11 holes after the luncheon for an 8/7 victory.
The junior fi nal was another nail-biter won by Colin Camp-bell over Rob Goodhew on the 36th hole after being one down through 18 holes.
The lead changed numerous times.
John Warburton took out the junior B title, beating Dane Watts on the 19th hole.
After being three down at the fourth, Warburton recovered well to be 2-up with two holes to play.
Watts won both 17 and 18 with pars to send the match into overtime.
Tenacious Watts almost pulls victory from jaws of defeat

Plots With A ViewWith “Six Feet Under” having paved the way,
the sky’s now the limit on funeral comedy, so to speak. In the zippy zany British comedy “Plots With A View”, death and bereavement are fair game, but it’s the funeral industry that takes most of the barbs in a farcical onslaught that starts briskly and never lets up.
Set in a small English town, “Plots With A View” centres on an ancient, unrequited romance - as a boy, Boris Plotz failed to make the moves on Betty, and he has regretted it ever since. Now grown, Boris (Alfred Molina) is a director of Plotz Funeral Homes and Betty (Brenda Blethyn) the unhappy wife of a cheating husband (Robert Pugh) who also happens to be the town mayor.
Everything has remained status quo in their lives until Betty’s mother-in-law dies. Boris and Betty are thrust together again and as they discuss the funeral arrangements for Betty’s mother-in-law, the old spark is re-kindled.
Boris and Betty discover that the only obstacle between their love for one another, is Betty’s mar-riage to the two-timing Mayor. In a desperate bid for happiness Boris and Betty decide to stage her death and run away together.
Their only obstacle is the ambition of a rival fu-neral parlour run by a marketing-mad American named Frank Featherbed (Christopher Walken) and his dimwit assistant (Lee Evans), a meddle-some pair who’ll stop at nothing to get a bigger slice of mortuary share.
Featherbed is holding his fi rst funeral - done much to the surprise of the bereaved, in a Star Trek theme.
There are some cute and novel touches that liven up this gentle black comedy. These include the way Miriam Margolyes plays twin sisters Thelma and Selma who run the local fl orist shop, while the core cast are liable to break into lavish song and dance routines at the drop of a (top) hat, and Jerry Springer punctuates the movie with a sort of running commentary.
Watts as the viciously ambitious, blonde trollop, Meredith is a pleasant surprise.
Blethyn is always an eminently watchable actor, as is the soulful-eyed Molina - both prove themselves capable of cutting a dash on the dance fl oor, plus a little slapstick.
It’s refreshing to see mature actors as the ro-mantic leads.
Most of the jokes begin with Walken - whose electrifi ed hairstyle is an ever-present reminder of the fi lm’s tone - and end with his elaborate, unimaginably hilarious over-the-top funeral productions.
Give the serious nature of death, it takes some guts to treat the subject with-out the least degree of solemnity - but director Nick Hurran and writ-er Frederick Ponzlov aren’t interested in political correctness or pathos. And it’s a good thing - any such compromise would have been fatal. That the fi lm is able to indulge such excesses without risk-ing tastelessness is a function of its total devotion to absurdity.

See Black Eyed Peas liveTe Awamutu Courier and Tracs give readers the
chance to win a double pass to see the the Black Eyed Peas play Auckland’s North Shore Events Centre on Friday, October 8.
They play Wellington the night before. Tickets are available from Ticketek.
The Black Eyed Peas - an all-rapping, all-breakdanc-ing, all-live hip hop e n t e r -tainment m a c h i n e - return to New Zealand in October to bring peace, love, and one hell of a party.
The Black Eyed Peas’ live show is spontaneous, electric, interactive and always surprising. As Reuters raved of a May 2004 gig, “the Black Eyed Peas bring the crowd to life with wonderful zeal. The group’s funk-doused hip-hop was cranked out by a live wire of a band, while the quartet showed they didn’t need any cad-re of dancers because they have their own moves.”
In a world of wannabe gangstas, Black Eyed Peas’ music has promoted positivity throughout their
near-10-year ca-reer, and in the past 12 months the world fi nally caught on to their socially-c o n s c i o u s style.
The success of ‘Where is
the Love?’ (fea-turing guest vocals from T i m b e r l a k e ) propelled their third album ‘Elephunk’ into
the Australian Top 5, and their show-stealing appearance on the Big Day Out cemented this former underground act’s credentials as bone fi de hip hop superstars.
To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to ‘The Black Eyed Peas Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm next Tuesday.
Te Awamutu Courier and Tracs give readers the chance to win a double pass to see Aussie icon John Williamson live at Hamilton’s Founders Theatre.
The concert is on Friday, October 8, the seventh on a nine date New Zealand tour.
Tickets are available from Ticketek. In July 2003 John Williamson began
a True Blue Reunion Tour with special guests Pixie Jenkins and Warren H Williams.
T h e True Blue R e u n i o n p r o v e d to be an o u t s t a n d -ing success with most shows sold out and many stand- ing ova-tions.
Due to the immense popularity of last year’s tours John is now coming to New Zealand with
Pixie and Warren.John’s ‘True Blue Reunion’ Tour will support
the CD and DVD ‘True Blue Two’ out now on EMI.
Classic songs that will be reprised are ‘ H a w k e s b u r y River Lovin’, ‘Flight of the Blowfl y’, ‘Boo-merang Cafe’ and ‘Teach Me to Drive’
with Pixie and ‘A Thousand Feet’, ‘What a Place’ and ‘Raining on the Rock’ with Warren.
To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to ‘The John Williamson Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm next Tuesday.
