Circulatory System

• The transportation system of the body

• Circulatory comes from the word “circle”

• Blood circles the body:

heart

lungs

heart

Body cells

Another name for the

circulatory system is the

cardiovascular system

Page 2: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

Major Organs and Tissues of the

Circulatory System

• Heart

• Blood Vessels

• Blood

Why is Circulation

Important?

The circulatory system

transports oxygen and food to

the brain, feet, muscles, and

every single part of the body.

It is very important that the

circulatory system in the body

keeps going all the time. If it

stops, even for a short time

then the body will very

quickly die.

Three Functions of the

Circulatory System:

1. To move oxygen and nutrients

to all cells of the body

2. To move carbon dioxide and

other wastes out of the cells

3. To fight disease

The Heart

• The heart has 4 chambers:

atrium

ventricle

Page 7: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

Parts of the Heart

• Atrium - upper chamber

• septum - thick tissue that

separates left and right side

of heart

• valve -flap of tissue

• ventricle - lower chamber

of heart

Blood Vessels

3 Kinds of blood

vessels

• Arteries

• Veins

• Capillaries

Page 11: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

Arteries

• Arteries ALWAYS carry blood AWAY

from the heart

Page 12: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

VEINS

carry

blood TO

the heart

CAPILLARIES

connect arteries to veins

artery

vein

Capillaries are

where cells

connect to

blood.

Oxygen, and

nutrients are

exchanged for

carbon dioxide

and wastes.

Special Veins and Arteries

• The Aorta is the largest artery in the body -

leading from the heart

• The Vena Cava is the largest vein in the

body, and leads to the heart

• The pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein

connect the heart to lungs

What is the meaning of the cartoon?

What did we learn with the heart

run around? • What do cells use up to make energy?

• When you exercise do cells use it faster or slower?

• How does oxygen get from your lungs to your

body cells?

• What makes blood move?

• What did we simplify?

• Cells must always have energy. If it is used up

faster it must be replaced faster. This means that

the heart must ______________

Do Now

• In journal, describe what is happening on

SIDE A of the handout.

• HINT: Think about our game we played

yesterday.

Page 18: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

Capillaries Side A

• Oxygenated blood comes from the heart and

goes through the organ where it becomes

de-oxygenated blood.

Page 19: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

• Describe what is happening on side B of the

handout.

Page 20: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

Capillaries Side B

• Shows blood picking up waste and carbon

dioxide from the organ and blood giving the

organ water, nutrients and oxygen. The

blood stays in the capillary. Water can go

both ways.

Pulmonary artery - carries blood

from heart to lungs

Blood is a liquid tissue

• Blood is a mixture-

part liquid and part

solid

• Plasma is liquid part

of blood

• Clotting is controlled

by platlets

Page 25: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

Red Blood Cell- contains

hemoglobin (iron compound)

which carries oxygen

Page 26: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

White Blood Cells fight disease

Page 27: Circulatory System - White Plains Middle School...The circulatory system transports oxygen and food to the brain, feet, muscles, and every single part of the body. circulatory system

Platelets - form clots

Gas Exchange • The pulmonary

blood vessels take

the blood from the

heart to the lungs.

• They drop off

wastes and pick up

oxygen

• Then the blood

goes back to the

heart
