Why is Circulation
Important?
The circulatory system
transports oxygen and food to
the brain, feet, muscles, and
every single part of the body.
It is very important that the
circulatory system in the body
keeps going all the time. If it
stops, even for a short time
then the body will very
quickly die.
Three Functions of the
Circulatory System:
1. To move oxygen and nutrients
to all cells of the body
2. To move carbon dioxide and
other wastes out of the cells
3. To fight disease
The Heart
• The heart has 4 chambers:
atrium

Capillaries Side A
• Oxygenated blood comes from the heart and
goes through the organ where it becomes
de-oxygenated blood.
• Describe what is happening on side B of the
handout.
Capillaries Side B
• Shows blood picking up waste and carbon
dioxide from the organ and blood giving the
organ water, nutrients and oxygen. The
blood stays in the capillary. Water can go
both ways.
