BEFORE I CROP UPin the Mailbagagain,se-veral mistakes appeared in my April 14th Col-umn, which were my own fault. One, when I re-ferred to JOHNNY ZOPPE I Meant JOHN ZOPPE, Sr. Two: The rhesus monkeys and afghandog acts will not appear at Cape Cod (unfort-unately) as these negotiations apparently did notjell but certainly these two great acts WILL ap-pear with Circus Odyssey in the future. Three:I appear at the St. Louis Shrine and not the Po-lice Circus which having played the now defunctPolice date for the late AL DOBRITCH I alwaysconfuse, especially when I have to get a columnoff in a hurry and, lately, that seems to be thecase.

In an earlier column I already retracted the bitabout CV's not doing the Gay Night in L.A. asthey did last year. About the kids' tickets, I waspassed along erroneous information from sone-one on the West Coast who'd been visiting Var-gas and who had gotten that impression. Sorry.

LA.'s HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTEST BET-TY ESC A L A N T E is just getting over the flu bugand writes that she has been tired and listlessand suffering from too much tretacyclines (hopethat's spelled right as I copied from the le t te r ) .That column devoted entirely to her letter tome has elicited mucho phone calls and tettersto which she adds. "Thanks a lot for bringingold friends together." You're welcome dearheart.

CLOSEUPS: Showgirl SHARON WARD wasforced to leave the Ringling unit owning to badhealth. Get well soon, Sharon.. .BETTY ESCALANTE and entourage went to the Variety ArtsClub in LA. where SHIRLEY CARROLL wasdonating Norman's circus collection. In the lob-by were clowns handing out candy floss andpopcorn from a circus wagon; in the bar down-stairs was free champagne. In attendance amongthe many was BOBBY KAYE, also JO JO MON-ARCH a gal with whom Betty worked on the oldCole show... ROMAN and JEAN SCHMITT willmake the Western tour for BILL KAY .. .HO-WARD SUESZ writes that he is taking life easyin Hariingen, Texas. ..KAY ROSAI RE, after los-ing her lions last season, bought the late ELOISEBERCHTOLD's cat act and now, after havingher baby, is back in action and playing dates...GEORGE HUBLER has acquired new equip-ment in which to transport his circus - several

new pieces of rolling stock, in fact.JOHN HERRIOTT writes he spent six months

with Atayde, some of that time on the road withthe tent show which he says is well-organized.In winter quarters he routined two elephant actsone for the tent show, one for the Arena production, plus a camel act and an eight palomino li-berty horse drill. Johnny presented the horseand elephant acts in the Arena Mexico and waspleased to receive the Manuel Del A Rosa Medalfor the best Animal Act of 1980, given for thehorses, during a lavish ceremony. Award for theBest Aerial Act went to the WALLENOAS.Meanwhile MARY RUTH trained a new dog actof giant poodles which debuted recently withthe CORONAS. She spent a month with John-ny during the Holidays in Mexico where BOBBYand ROSA GIBBS were her guides on a tour ofthe smaller circuses (tent shows) and where theypointed out the major sights of the city. They al-so did the night club scenes with A L E K andRUTH SEBESTYN, JIMMY and EVY FOSSETTVisitors included BILL HILL, HERBIE WEBER,MARCELLA, BIG JOHN STRONG and DOREYMILLER.In his lengthy letter JOHNNY reports that

CINDY and HEIDI are with the Royal Hanne-ford Circus working in the riding act, also doingproduction and Johnny visited his daughtersduring the Detroit date enroute to his own ap-pearance at the Aut Mori Grotto Circus in Youngstown. He and Mary Ruth and daughter Weinerplayed St. Pete and Tampa for Garden-Johnsonwith three rings of high school horses, MaryRuth's dog act, and Werner's new juggling act.The same combination played the West Orangedate for Coronas where Johnny was also ringmaster. Prior to the West Orange date the Herriottsappeared on the grounds of the Smithsonian inDC, along with BOBBY KAYE, LOU JACOBS,the National Marine Band, all portraying the"Americana" of the American Circus and weregreatly pleased by the honor. IN SHOW BUSINESS it's known that daughterslike fathers WHO CAN'T NO and fathers tikedaughters who can.

FOR SOME SHOWS figuring out the route forthe next date sometimes finds the shortest dis-tance between towns is ALWAYS UNDERCONSTRUCTION.

SOME SHOWMEN have pocket calculators, poc-ket recorders, pocket pens. EVERYTHING FORHIS POCKET BUT MONEY.

KARIN DAVIS SEZ. . . .

Once again, we left the building this morningand as we were getting ready to go, a performerfrom the show was dumping his holding tank onto the concrete next to the building, after whichhe said, "Oh the water will wash it away."

Most every city today has stringent laws regarding such flagrant disposal of human wastes. It isthis one performer at a date who ruins it so thatnone of us can park at the building in the future.More than likely he won't even be at this partic-ular date next year, so he will not hear the re-percussions of his thoughtless act.

Circus performers on the whole are no betteror no worse than any other groups of peoplebut because of being in the public's eye theyare scrutinized much more. This is why the fewwho have no respect for their total reputationor that of their profession in general, mustwake up to what they are doing, be brought tocare, and become responsible for their actionsas adults.

We all suffer when charges for parking aremade at the buildings because of past yearsmesses and we alt suffer when we have to park

elsewhere and commute to work because ot aperformer's thoughtlessness. Perhaps many per-formers don't realize that when they leave amess, someone must be hired to clean it up.More and more, this charge is passed on to theproducer. Some will absorb this fee, Otherswill not. If not, the performer then finally ab-sorbs this cost. It affects us all no matter ifmost of us are clean or not.The next time you "pull the plug", ask if it is

worth $35.00 a week as Springfield, Mo., charg-ed last year or $10.00 a day as Louisville, Ky.,charged this year!

The following points could be used as a guideline:

1 - Don't dispose of refuse improperly2 - Don't dump holding tanks for any reason3 - Don't leave dog droppings on concrete4 • Don't let your dog run loose5 - Don't damage anything and see that your

children don't either6 - Don't leave a mess in the building7 - Don't leave a mess in the dressing room8 - Don't let your pet run loose in the building9 - Don't let your pet deficate in the building10 - Don't severely discipline animals in sight of

the paying public11 • Don't let your animals become so dirty that

you can smell them before you can seethem

Most important, in this great free countrywhere we all live, together, don't let the exercis-ing of your freedoms, curb the freedoms ofothers.

CIE MclNTOSH and CHUCK MARINE flewWest to sign the Sioux City, Iowa, date to addto their Omaha and Lincoln Shrine dates for the1981 route. I sat on this item for over a year.Gracie will repeat the Wyandotte, Migh. date inJuly and rumors are she has other new dates onthe fire for 1981.

BEWARE: Many acts have asked me to writethe following: In the East is a man posing as anagent who has conned a number of well-knownacts into quoting him prices, giving him picturesand trying to convince these people to cancelother dates when he dazzles them with fantasticsalaries for non-existent ones. Fortunately, wordis getting round about his man who is NOT anagent, never has been, and is NOT associatedwith the WILLIAM MORRIS AGENCY as heclaims. For further information about this bogusagent ask ALBERT and JEANETTE RIX, BILLand TRUDY STRONG, DAVIOE ZOPPE andothers when you run into them. And for thoseacts appearing in the East, PLEASE investigatewhen approached and do not let youselves betaken in. There are many bona-fide agents in theEast but this man is NOT one of them. He ap-pears well-dressed, carries a brief case crammedwith pictures and phoney contracts, and has aconvincing gift of gab.

ITEMIZING: SUSAN SHERYLL's Afghans andthe ZOPPE's crazy Rhesus Monkeys will be withthe Texas Shrine dates; ditto the QUASSARSand CUNEO's White Tigers and Elephants...JEANNIE HALL's baboons made the Amarillodate for Hubler. She goes to Great Adventurein June for the balance of the season.. .GUN-NAR AMANOIS, hop-scotching all around, toldme wife HELEN likes to stay at home and has ahorse she rides for relaxtion.. .ED MIGLEY ma-king frequent business meetings to New YorkCity and plans an important announcement forhis 1981 season soon.. .For the Sarasota FairWES OLER booked in Charley Pride, Ray Ste-

the Ruwills, Debbie and Emil Goetschi, Holveck& Co., and Wes and Florine Oler. Florine is spor-ting a new portable Hammond for which Wes hadingenious cases made; Debbie and Emil are doingtheir new juggling act and doing quite well, and Ihad a chance to see Iris' and Tony's bright newcomedy number. Tony also learned to do rollingglobe and they ooen the show with the act whichfeatures a clever portable incline ramp that turnsinto a teeter-totter. It was a pleasing show overall

Iris showed me her wedding pictures, also pic-tures of her sister Anita's new baby, mentionedthat her brother is all grown up, has a car and ajob, and that her father is now retired.

Later we retired in a group to a nearby PizzaHut to cut up jackpots while the Goetschis, theAdams and the Ruwills went on to catch Ham-id-Morton, where I visited the night before.

NEWS FROM HAMID-MORTON: The ELK-INS SISTERS will retire that version of the actafter this season and continue with the new FA-BULOUS DARNELLS, a clever illusion and dogact. Kurt showed me pictures of the act and itlooks like a sure-fire winner.. That fearless ti-ger trainer WADE BURCK - can you believe -chews bubble gum! The tiger act is great.. ZAMPERLAS arrived after an overnight jum of 700miles, a half hour before showtime to find dau-ghter MAFALDA with husband JAMES waitingto surprise them. James and Mafalda were alrea-dy prepared to work in case they didn't get inon time.. .MIKE C L U C K F R (Earl Michaels) inaddition to announcing the show and singingfor the aerial ballet is doing a plate spinning act.Other performers on the show whom I said aquick hello to are: Alfonso and Lydia Burkett,Frank and Doris Galumbos, Don Young; alsohad a chat with Carol and Bob Atterbury andwith Gunnar Amandis who was in for a quickvisit.

My biggest and happiest surprise was encoun-tering PATSY and JOHNNY JORDAN, on the

May 5,1980

show for two dates with daughter DeLISA'strapeze number. Johnny looks wonderful, evenpracticed yogi-positions with me to show hislegs are moving well again. It was Patsy's birth-day and so we partied until the early hours ofthe ayem. They said the Motordrome Globe willthey think, be suspended in a cable basket andthen guyed out when they go into Circus Circus, but they themselves, are not really sure how therigging will be installed. They are required touse mufflers on the bikes to soften noise andthey will enter from the ceiling onto a platformand into the cage. JODY does his routine first, then JOHNNY comes in with the second bikefor the big wild wind-up. They are also doingthe JORDANA act but from the monorail whichencircles the casino. They open June 1st for sixmonths with options.

Prior to Harrisburg, the Jordans were in Syra-cuse, the scene of Johnny's near-fatal fall lastyear. Apparently the entire city turned out tchonor his courageous comeback and on the lastday the Nurses of &A of Syracuse's Upstate Me-dical Center presented him, in center ring, witha huge and humorous banner they had madethemselves, which proclaimed their love forJohnny Jordan embellished with hand-sewn pic-tures. For over an hour Johnny regaled me withhis antics with those nurses during his long hos-pital stay. And, knowning Johnny's sense of hu-mor, I could visualize the whole thing perfectly.

LAST MINUTE ITEMS: CARLA WALLENDAis okay after her fall from the slide when the pinholding the slide loop crystalized and broke anddropped her to the ground 20 feet from the endof the slide. She's a very lucky girl.. .CAR LAand her troupe played the Hall of Fame for 3weeks.. .TOMMY BAKER is now involved inprofessional theatre and essaying Shakespeareanroles. Also, I hear, played the part of Dracula.the new version created by FRANK LANGELLA

... from Happy Davis

We enjoyed reading the nice article that Bill Gal-loway wrote about the Buffalo (NY) Shrine Cir-cus.I would like to make one correction if I may. Itnoted that Happy Davis was producing clown. With all respect to Bill, it was Wayne Liika whowas the producing clown. The Shrine had stipulations for that date as tohow many clowns there were to be and GeorgeHubler asked me if I would do him a favor andmake an "appearance" in one number to helphim fit! his "quota" of clowns. I have not clow-ned on a regular basis since the 50's, but I dowork my comedy acts in clown make-up.

OTLtDuring the April 7-13, Springfield, Mo., date, fi-nal arrangements were made and a semi-tractorwas sent to Paul Kelly's old Cole Bros. Circuswinterquarters in Peru, where the Paul Kellyelephants and trailer were picked up, havingbeen purchased by Garden-Johnson Circus.

BILLY BARTON (Continued)

and I'll bet he was magnificent. He has that re-quired tall, dark and handsome look.. .HOXIEBROS, now playing the Southland.. .BILLBRICKLE is the announcer and performancedirector and aerial acts include the Lisner Duo,Freddie White, Valentino Duo and Dana Arm-strong. . .Recent visitors were Mike and JaniceAria, and Buckles Woodcock.. .WIRENGAROjust completed a great new "flash" prop, de-signed by RON HOLIDAY, for that team's Si-berian tiger trick, a new one, set to debut withtheir September opening in Atlantic City.

SHOW STOPPERS: 16yr. old DeLISA JOR-DAN'S trapeze act, exciting ovations at everyperformance on the BILL KAY's Syracuse date,in which she features a free neck hang, swingingankle drops, and a one hock.. .HASH! DUBSKY17, called SIR HARRY JAMES who bought theLOthar-nnn-f inger-act and who is driving all thegirls in the audience out of their minds with hishandsome appearance and urbane style andshowmanship. Everyone says the young man isGREAT!

SEE YOU down the road, luvs.
